Story
There's a common plea detectives get from the loved ones of victims: When you find the person who did this, give me five minutes alone with them. And that's exactly what someone is doing. Someone is helping these victims get their five minutes alone. When the body of a convicted rapist is found, the detectives try to determine if this is murder or suicide. The following night two more rapists go missing. It's hard to investigate when everyone on the police force seems to be rooting for the killer.

Story
Joe is in control of everything in his simple life - both his day job as a janitor for the police department and his "night work". He isn't bothered by the daily news reports of the Christchurch Carver, who, they say, has murdered seven women. Joe knows, though, that the Carver killed only six. He knows that for a fact, and he's determined to find the copycat. He'll punish him for the one then frame him for the other six. All he needs now is to take care of all the women who keep getting in his way, including his overprotective mother.

Publisher's Summary
People are disappearing in Christchurch. Cooper Riley, a psychology professor, doesn't make it to work one day. Emma Green, one of his students, doesn't make it home. When ex-cop Theodore Tate is released from a four-month prison stint, he's asked by Green's father to help find Emma. After all, Tate was in jail for nearly killing her in a DUI accident the year before, so he owes him. Big time. What neither of them knows is that a former mental patient is holding people prisoner as part of his growing collection of serial-killer souvenirs.

Quirky & enjoyable book
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
No, not that kind of thriller. This book was written more as a psychological character study of the leading protagonists. The plot itself was very different and well executed as it jumped from character to character. There was also a lot of irony and subtle humour so that the horror of the deeds undertaken were somewhat diminished but not absolved.
Which character – as performed by Paul Ansdell – was your favorite?
For me it was the mentally deficient, but cunning, Adrian, so well portrayed by the narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh on quite a few occasions, and sad on a few too, but mainly it kept my interest.
Any additional comments?
I'm looking forward to reading this book again. It's my first Paul Cleave, but certainly won't be my last. A thoroughly enjoyable book, I recommend it to those who enjoy an intelligently written psychological thriller.

I should not have been surprised, but I was !
I've read 'The Cleaner' and 'Joe Victim' (listened to the first and read the second) so I should not have been surprised by the weirdness of this book but I was totally taken aback, its weird as weird can be, the title is so fitting, it is probably the strangest book I've ever listened to from Audible and it's absolutely brilliant, depressing in many places but humorous too, I really enjoyed this book and am currently listening to 'The Laughterhouse' which is book 3 in the Theo Tate sequence which I am also enjoying. I would certainly recommend this one (and book 3) to anyone who enjoys dark humour in their crime thrillers.
