Publisher's Summary

In this thrilling epic of the American West, New York Times best-selling authors William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone capture the human side of the frontier experience in all its glory, grit, and grandeur - through the eyes of one remarkable teenage boy.

Leaving their Pennsylvania home to forge a new life in the untamed Oregon Territory of 1845, the Colter family is ambushed by a kill-crazy gang of cutthroats on the Oregon Trail. Fifteen-year-old Tim Colter manages to escape and hide - only to return and find his parents butchered, his sisters Nancy and Margaret missing, and one last killer waiting for his return.

Forced to fight for his life, the young Colter embarks on a perilous journey across a lawless frontier, hoping to save his sisters and salvage the dream they lived for. But first Tim has to figure out how to survive. Luckily he finds a new friend in Jed Reno, a grizzled one-eyed trapper who has lived in the Rocky Mountains since the 1820s - and who was attacked by the same gang that ambushed Tim's family.

Together the mountain man and the greenhorn set out after the marauders, blazing a trail of vengeance that leads them to one of the deadliest men in the territory. With danger at every turn and death just a heartbeat away, Colter has no choice but to grow up fast - one bullet at a time.

Boring

Boring, and that is being kind. This book just drolls on, and on, and on, with wandering thoughts, and many words, which have nothing to do with the plot, or the story.

Typical-

Not much to hear here. Story lacks imaginations and very predictable - like written by a novice. The reader assumes a John Wayne voice for the story’s hero who grunts out some words when it’s forced upon him. Overall, a waste of time and a point.

Could have done without the John Wayne impersonation.

Entertaining story, narrators use of his John Wayne impersonation for the Reno character was distracting.

The narrator dose a 4 plus job HOWEVER

The production value is low. The sound level changes so much that you will loose some dialogue.

The story is good but not complete.

Very good beginning to a new series

The Johnstones have written very good beginning to a new series. John McLain brought all the characters to life with his very western voice. If you’re a fan of old west stories you won’t want to miss this one.

Great Storie line

I have listened to every Louis l amour book That is out, so I have now been listening to other authors to fill the void. This was a great storie with some predicable but satisfying twists. I love the main character and how he handle life’s cards, especially I liked his self talk narrative. Hero’s are made one thought at a time!

Hard to put down.

The reader gave the words emotion. You could see John Wayne playing "Big Medicine". That may be why he liked the story also.

I'm no expert, but I found this book mighty fine.

I can't comment on writing skill or plot depth.
However, what I can say is that I really enjoyed this book. I am bias in that I adore tales from the real wild west of America and for me, this book satisfied that bias.

I would reccomend, especially to anyone who enjoyed the red dead redemption game series.
