Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Publisher's Summary
A recurrent, unidentifiable noise in her apartment. A memo to her boss that's replaced by obscene insults. Amanda - a successful architect in a happy marriage - finds her life going off kilter by degrees. She starts smoking again, and one night for no reason, without even the knowledge that she's doing it, she burns her husband with a cigarette. At night she dreams of a beautiful woman with pointed teeth on the shore of a blood-red sea.
The new voice in Amanda's head, the one that tells her to steal things and talk to strange men in bars, is strange and frightening, and Amanda struggles to wrest back control of her life. Is she possessed by a demon, or is she simply insane?

Don’t listen or read this book, use caution.

I came for demonic fiction. but was left listening to a woman doing crappy things and conveniently blaming them on demons. Kinda pathetic story wise.

Wow! Excellent story and narration.
Wow. I had no idea what I was getting into with this one. I've been hearing about it for years and it's been sitting, staring at me from my tbr for a long, long time.
I swear I thought it was a vampire story. Maybe that's why I had been avoiding it. But, since it's Women in Horror month, I decided I needed to finally give in and I am so glad that I did.
Turns out, I absolutely loved everything about this one. The writing was phenomenal. The storyline was fast paced and engaging. There was a palpable growing sense of dread on every page.
Excellent. 5 Stars for sure.

Predictable horror
Tiktok made me get this book and I do regret using a credit on it. I didn't like how predictable it became. Eventually it was like "Okay get it on with so that I can predict the next thing to happen." It also wasn't scary unless you have a huge fear of possession. Also, random homophobia right at the beginning of the book?? It wasn't even on character for the pre-possessed main character. That immediately made me not like the character which was the opposite of how it should have been because then I just didn't have sympathy for her when she's put though all of the bad situations later in the book. Relies on implied emotions instead of taking the time to develop in depth the characters; no twist (if you can call them twists) was really earned.
