Publisher's Summary

A masterful, heart-palpitating novel of small-town horror and psychological dread from a Bram Stoker nominee.

Aaron Decker's life changes one December morning when his wife, Allison, is killed. Haunted by her absence - and her ghost - Aaron goes through her belongings, where he finds a receipt for a motel room in another part of the country. Piloted by grief and an increasing sense of curiosity, Aaron embarks on a journey to discover what Allison had been doing in the weeks prior to her death.

Yet Aaron is unprepared to discover the dark secrets Allison kept, the death and horror that make up the tapestry of her hidden life. And with each dark secret revealed, Aaron becomes more and more consumed by his obsession to learn the terrifying truth about the woman who had been his wife, even if it puts his own life at risk.

Not Really a Thriller

This book is more about grief and uncovering secrets than it is a typical thriller. The audiobook is 11.5 hours long and in that time there were only two minutes where the characters were actually in any active danger. In my opinion, two minutes of action in an 11.5 hour story does not constitute a thriller. That being said, the book itself is well written, but if you are expecting an action thriller my advice would be to pass.

You will not regret listening to this book!

So first I have to say that I disagree with other reviewers who said that Aaron communicating with the ghost of his wife Allison was too much or distracting--to me, I really feel like it was important to the themes of the story (especially the ending too). I wasn't the biggest fan of Aaron all the time, I found his descriptions of the women he met often based on their level of attractiveness or unattractiveness a little bit annoying and misogynistic but I suppose a character does not have to be likeable all the time to enjoy a story! I was still very interested in the story and his POV.

Parts of the story were gripping and parts I found a little too predictable, but whatever you do please read till the end! The ending will make you really appreciate the story as a whole even if you predicted some of what happens. Also the writing is very beautiful and poetic. The narrator for the audiobook at first I found not super engaging, but by the second chapter he hit his stride and I loved his voices for different characters/overall narration style as he kept going.

Ok story

I enjoyed this story for the most part, but I did not like how the narrator was talking to his dead wife for the whole book. It just seemed unnecessary to tell the story and was distracting.

start listening to this RIGHT NOW!

THIS BOOK!! It was SO good! It was picked as one of the group reads for one of the book clubs I'm in (Horror Aficionados) so I downloaded the audio book and started listening. I know I glanced over what it was about but by the time I started listening, I didn't remember everything. The characters in this book was realistic. The relationships between all the characters felt real too. The world building is phenomenal. The suspense in this book had me on the edge of my seat. I had no idea who did what and why but omg i couldn't stop listening, I just had to find out. I loved it. Another outstanding read by Mr. Malfi!
The amazing Joe Hempel reads this. He did a great job, just as he always does. It's always a delight to hear him read.

Wow!

Definitely one of the best books I have ever read or listened to. It’s long, but plays out like a mini series. It begins with a story of grief, as the narrator speaks to his wife who died in a horrific active shooting. However, as he grieves, he discovers a side to his wife he did not know existed. As he uncovers the truth about who his wife was, he becomes obsessed with a mystery that plagued his wife before her death. It’s eerie, emotional, and suspenseful as all heck. It gripped me at page (or minute) one and had me until the author’s note at the end. Highly recommend this book.

A Haunting Tale of Secrets and Lies

When Allison Decker is shot and killed in a senseless act of violence, her husband's life is irrevocably changed. But the true extent of his life's transformations doesn't begin until he discovers something seemingly innocuous in a box of his wife's belongings from work. A receipt from a motel in a small town he'd never heard of, from a trip he didn't know Allison had taken, is all it takes to send Aaron down a path he'd never have imagined possible.
Worried that his wife might have been cheating on him, Aaron begins unraveling the threads of a double-life Allison was leading, and infidelity might have been a relief. Instead, Aaron finds himself stumbling along in the footsteps of the woman he'd married but hardly knew. The truth of Allison's activities will uncover lies and horrors Aaron could never be prepared to face as he stubbornly and desperately struggles to understand the woman he loved and lost. In the end, we're forced--along with Aaron--to acknowledge that we might indeed be guilty of haunting ourselves.
Malfi crafts a well-orchestrated mystery that leaves the reader guessing right up until the conclusion. As we join Aaron Decker on his journey of discovery, we're left reeling with each new revelation alongside the protagonist, forced to question how well we ever know someone and how dark the depths of one's character might be.
Joe Hempel's narration of the audiobook is superb, and he captures the confusion, fear, and frustration Aaron feels as he persists in his fool's quest to solve a mystery Allison may have already solved before she was tragically unable to fulfill her life's mission.

awesome book

I usually don't write reviews but this was such a great story that I feel like I have to. The story is told in a way that it's like a long letter, an amazing letter. The narrator is also easy to listen to. I will definitely be recommending this book to all my reader friends!

Five stars all the way

A brilliant book from start to finish, and Joe Hempel does such an awesome job with the narration, too, as I knew he would. The guy's got a great track record.
As for Ronald Malfi, he hits all the stops here. Man, I can't wait to read more of his work. I've only read Mr.Cables so far, which was only a few months ago, but looking at all the books he's put out, it looks like I've got a fair bit of catching up to do.
Damn it. Too many books.
What makes it even worse is I could see myself reading this one again. I have the Kindle version and the audiobook at the moment, but I would buy a limited edition in a heartbeat if it ever got released.
This one was so well written. I found myself appreciating so many lines in this. Too many to mention.
Seek it out. It's completely engaging all the way
And don't forget to read the afterword.
That's all I'm saying.
The less you know the better.
Five stars. No question.

I'm coming...

Literally inhaled this audiobook... not had much sleep over the past 2 days.
It satifsied both my serial killer, and my ghostly goings on hunger, without being overly dependent on either for kicks.
I thought the narrator pitched it perfectly, the tone was fatalistic, which perfectly made sense of the circular plot. Our hero is caught up in someone else's story, in the same way we are caught up in his.
The whole piece felt comfortable and assured and I am excited to read more by Ronald Malfi.

Interesting book

I quite enjoyed this one. Certainly a cut above the usual waste of a credit. I liked the subtle supernatural overtones. Most of the characters were quite interesting and there were enough twists and turns so that the ending wasn't entirely predicable. Competent narrator too. On the whole not a bad tale. For me, it won't bear a second listen but it did help pass a fairly entertaining 11 hours while I worked.

Brilliant from top to bottom

Brilliant story, exquisite prose, and superb performance. This is a creepy serial killer story with wisps of the supernatural and the uncanny that add to the mystery and creepiness. This is a crime thriller working outside of the humdrum formula of most. A must read.

The Listener goes with Malfi on a intricate skill full narrative journey.

An excellent book for anyone who wants to be pulled into a journey of discovery, with hints of the uncanny. The ending is faultless. The narrator sounds as if he was made to tell this story, and makes an enthralling interpretation of the author’s work, laying ghosts to rest.

A fantastic surprise.

Come With Me popped up as a recommended book based on other purchases. I'd never read anything by Ronald Malfi before, although I'd heard of him via the HWA. So I grabbed this on a whim, and listened to it over the Christmas period and it ended up being a contender for my favorite book I read this year, which had some extremely stiff competition.

Wonderful writing, extremely satisfying conclusion, a mystery that feels like a real journey to solve, and deftly performed by Joe Hempel.

Extremely glad I picked this up on the spur of the moment, and I've since bought three more books by the author to check out.

Good but missing something...

I bought this audiobook in August and I've only just finished it in November. It's a good book but it's missing something that makes you not stop listening.

I felt like the storyline was a bit up and down. When it was down it lost my interest and I would listen to a different book, hence why it's taken me so long to finish!

overall I just found that this story wasn't for me, the narrator was good but I found the story too long and drawn out. I think this would be a great tv mini series but as a book i couldn't get into it.

Simply brilliant!

Wow! I now understand why so many people are singing Ronald Malfi's praises. What an amazing story teller! Aaron Decker's life turns upside down after he loses his wife, Allison tragically to a gun shooting at a shopping centre. After going through Allison's things, he stumbles upon a hotel receipt for a 2 night stay in a motel that he knew nothing about, leading him to investigate why she was there and with who. Initially Aaron thinks that his wife had been having an affair, but what Aaron realises as he digs deeper is that there were many things that she had kept from her husband, things much darker than what he initially suspected. I love this book so much. The narrator, Joe Hempel did a stellar job and portrayed Aaron flawlessly. This story made me feel so sad at times, it had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next, and the ending, oh my, I wasn't expecting it at all. I'm going to be reading more by Mr Malfi, because this book certainly impressed me that he is a writer to look out for. This deserves more than a mere rating, this deserves an award! Brilliant!
