Why are women so often overlooked and underpaid? What are the real reasons men get raises more often than women? How can women ask for - and actually get - the money, the job, the recognition they deserve? Prompted by her own experience as cohost of Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski asked a wide range of successful women to share the critical lessons they learned while moving up in their fields. Power players such as Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Harvard's Victoria Budson, comedian Susie Essman, and many more shared their surprising personal stories.

So many women hit their 40s or 50s and realize: It's time for a career change. Maybe you're yearning to try something new, or you're sensing that layoffs are coming and you need a backup plan. Disappointed
The book speaks to a select group of women, mainly upper middle class managerial types coming back into the workforce. I'm a 50 year old woman who went back to school at 43 to get my degree. I was a restaurant professional before going back to school and I don't gage children. Small window into a huge subject. It's a shame the scope of the book isn't more inclusive.

I knew going to law school at age 50 was my path!
After being fired for temporarily needing to breastfeed during work hours, followed by a serious illness that took me years to recover from, I was really lost and living in a whole new community with no contacts. I had done a lot of volunteer advocacy work with non profits and in the legislature before I became ill-temporarily paralyzed from the chest down actually. At age 48, I went back to school for a second master's. Then at age 49, I got into law school with an almost 90k scholarship. I wasn't sure if I should go, but this book reinforced what I already knew. Yes, I'm going for it!! And while homeschooling an 8 year old, with my husband out of work during, a pandemic. the book lowered my anxiety and made me feel like I can be successful at any age.

Really helpful! I am really surprised.
I signed up for a free trial of Audible and generally prefer non-fiction, actually prefer technical manuals for good reads. Since that wouldn't do for the work commute, I chose this title. I am, after all, a mature woman in a job that doesn't thrill me. So, what could it hurt?
I really thought for a while it was just a heavy pitch for LinkedIn, but I listened intently to all of the advice: researching your desired roles, knowing your value (of course), communicating your value, turning any employment gaps into a positive, so much more. Every day for a week and a half as I drove to and from my sad job, absorbing the material.
I also really thought this was geared to high-level professionals with wide networks. Something I don't have. I don't have a sister-in-law who is a successful broadcast professional. I don't have teenagers attending university with children of high-ranking diplomats I can reach out to. There were a lot of suggestions that just don't apply to me, a 53-yo empty-nester in a job I took because I didn't think I could do better.
Still, I took it all in and updated my resume, my LinkedIn, and Indeed settings. Maybe it's just the market or my (actually impressive) resume, someone reached out to me because I matched their open position. I used the advice that was still fresh in my mind and, apparently did well enough in the interviews. I start in 2 weeks. No lie. I got the salary I asked for and the benefits are outstanding. And I must give all credit to this audible book right here. The title I bought before this was an incredibly interesting Carl Sagan book "The Demon Haunted World - Science as a Candle in the Dark." I loved it! But it didn't get me hired. This book helped me get hired and will help me when/if I ever need to look elsewhere. Thanks to Mika and Ginny!!
