Publisher's Summary

The hit Commune Series is back with book five! Rejoin some of your old favorites and plenty of unforgettable new ones on another deadly romp through post-apocalyptic America.

Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washington D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver.

Bug, a natural, charismatic leader, refuses to leave anyone behind while the other, Books, is a pragmatic social outsider who wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive.

But DC isn't exactly the safehaven they hoped for, having been divided into three major factions: the Mall—which is controlled by a man named Knox and his lieutenants—Columbia Heights to the north, and Anacostia to the south.

On arrival, Books immediately recognizes that the people of the Mall are in a wartime posture. Uncomfortable with the idea of being pulled into someone else's war, he advises that the entire company should depart. Bug, upon realizing that the Mall is wonderfully organized with hydro-electric power, security, and a functioning hospital, refuses that advice, stating that it is more than fair that they should help their new benefactors defend their adopted territory.

Can their bond endure their conflicting points of view or will they be drawn against each other, and into a war that will consume everyone...leaving DC in Ashes?

Excruciating (update 2x)

I'm about 8 hours in and still feeling hopeful. I hope that this is going to be a continuation of the people we know and have come to love...so far we are still on the other side of the country. **fingers crossed**

UPDATE: 4 hours left and struggling. I don't care about any of the characters. I feel scammed right now. I'd like to know how this was allowed to be released with the Commune title. 4 hours left and not feeling hopeful anymore... feeling angry.

UPDATE: 8 chapters to go and I'm pretty sure I want my money back. I am struggling to get through this military story. There is NOTHING related to the rest of the series. This is NOT a book about rebuilding, this is a long, drawn-out battle with people I don't know or care about. How? How was this allowed to be a continuation of Commune? I feel as though I've been tricked into reading the beginnings of an entirely different series. I got to be honest, even RC Bray is getting on my nerves. It's just the same long sentence for 19 hours. This is just a shame and a waste of my time as I would never go for this type of book. This book is for military/war enthusiasts. You've completely lost me as a fan. If I can get through the next 8 chapters, I suppose I will post a final thought if something changes.

Last UPDATE...I hated it.

Why?

Just feel ripped off! I totally expected this book to take off from the end of book 4! I have restarted this book twice just can’t get into it and I haven’t been past chapter 9. It’s like jumping into a completely different book. Not happy at all! Sorry but it’s how I feel.

Woke not Commune

From listening Commune was in the title to get Pre-orders. There are no characters from the original Commune books except Commander Otto Warren & one of his men briefly mentioned. Story of poor oppressed black people after an apocalypse. Characters are bland at best and the story just drags on chapter after chapter until you lose interest. Book was returned.

Avoid: Not Commune Book 5

This is a classic bait and switch, like another reviewer mentioned regarding how the books pre-order description was changed. Has nothing to do with the story line of the previous 4 books save for it being in the same universe. This book doesn't progress the stories of the group in Wyoming ...you know, the reason we liked the series enough to buy #5. It carries over only 1 of the previous characters, and of course it's one that nobody gives a hoot about.

Also, why do most of the characters in this book have some goofy West Side Story'ish nickname, really? So in the apocalypse we're all going to start using absurd monikers like: Ajax, Bug, Books, Candyman, Grease, Taps, Kingpin, Nox, Stash, Shorty...I could go on but you get it. The whole story in DC within this book is boring and uninteresting. All of the characters are formulaic and single dimensional....like this whole book.

I wasn't interested in any of the characters and didn't really care what happened to them. Congrats Josh G. on writing 19 hours and 29 minutes of white noise. I found myself zoning out regularly, coming back to it not knowing what was going on... and not caring. If you're looking for a long book with lots of useless banter between characters you don't care about that have ridiculous names...this is a fantastically entertaining addition to your library. If you're looking for a Commune 5 experience, spend your credit elsewhere.

Terrible book, terrible characters, and utter failure of a continuation of a previously successful series....should've stopped with #4.

R.C. Bray, as per the norm, does an outstanding job as the vocal talent. But even he can't save this steaming pile of crap...

WARNING! this is not a continuation of Wyoming

But its still a great book. The characters all feel like real people that aren't perfect. The story is great! Its not all pew pew. As with the previous books the setting is slowly built and the tension slowly rises for an enjoyable ride.

But it does have a character from the previous book. Its kind of an answer to What happened with this person.

In my humble opinion. It's still a great book. But I understand the anger from people from the Publishers description. Which most definitely needs to be changed. But to say the entire book is terrible because Jake or Gibbs isn't in it. Is really misleading also.

Commune 5 DOES NOT continue the series.

First and foremost, the only good thing about this book is R.C. Bray rocks as usual. Outside of that the book in short just sucked for the following reasons.
Although I’ve been duped before by shifty market where an author writes a book and brands it as the next book of a really good series, to up the sales of a really crappy book that has little to no reference to the original series, this one is one of the worse. Granted the book gave me pause due to the sub title “The Battle of DC” but after really the publisher’s summary “Join all your favorite characters again on another deadly romp through post-apocalyptic America” I felt it was going to be an interesting book, somehow bring the people to DC or vice vera. Instead, none of the original characters are in the story outside of a brief mention of Otto and one of his men. Outside of misleading title and primes to the book, the actual story was slow and boring and should have been Book 1 of a different series where the slow character and storyline build would be expected, not a continuance of an existing series.

You lied to us

Rejoin some of your old favorites…… 1 guy. 1. Who isn’t even a main character, no one even likes otter, glad you changed the description from the “return of your favorite characters “ description. You pissed in our pockets n told us it was raining. I waited for this for months.
Josh-your a quality writer
Rc- your my favorite narrator
I’ve bought everything you’ve everything you two have ever made….. and this is trash bros. Remove the aspect of “returning character”…. And sell this for what it is. A new story with new people ifn the same universe. Rc…….. dude…… hold your authors accountable. I get it 2500 an hour and I’d read the phone book for that but confirm your authors arnt false booking you. Josh…… dude we trust you… please don’t betray that. 3/5 good story ish just falsely billed for content.also…. Please relax on the faux “woke” shiz. I didn’t return this so the review would stay up

I'm only 1 hr 45 mins into this and ...

its already in my top 20 most enjoyable titles out of 500+. RC Bray brings it all so convincingly to life, its like being able to watch a movie with your eyes closed. Same universe but not a continuation of the previous story.

Couldn't Finish

Loved the rest of the series and was excited for this one to come out. Bray's awesome narration couldn't compensate for how absolutely boring this book is. Eight chapters in and I turned it off. Zero character development, and I really had no idea what was going on. I didn't know who I cared about and just couldn't follow it. Bummer.

Less consistency, depth and humour than 1-4

I absolutely loved books 1 to 4 of Commune. Brilliant stories, narrated so well by RC Bray. Rich characters, flaws and all - and a lot of humour. I may be remembering things with slightly rose tinted glasses... Book 5 is set in a different locale with different characters. That's fine - and there's plenty of interesting dialogue and depth to some of the relationships. However... some of the characters seem to be so inconsistent in how they behave and see the world. One who is sensitive and loving in one scene is (somewhat pointlessly) killing someone with his bare hands in another. Someone who is - in some respects - quite bookish and smart, frequently either loses the plot or fails to deal with pretty basic situations with any sort of real sense.

A lot of the story is a basically meaningless battle between groups that don't really have much to differentiate them. I know that's a recurring theme in post apocalyptic story telling - but it grates more than ever here.

Unfortunately - not of the same depth and quality of 1 to 4 - and, sadly, almost completely devoid of the humour of the first four.

Loved every single minute

I have been a fan of Commune Series since I discovered it and itching for each next book to listen to. This was outstanding, hoping and praying that there is a next one, glad to see some of the past characters making the headlines. Joshua Gayou and Devon C. Ford not forgetting R.C. Bray, many thanks and look forward to the next one (hoping mightily).

The Best Universe in the Genre

Read the first 4 commune books? this is the start of a new series in the same universe! if you loved the previous 4 then you'll love this one if you're not already following the authors on social media you won't regret looking them up. you'll feel like part of a bugger family.

RC Bray. he's like the Barry White of narration can't do a bad performance.

Thanks for an excellent listen, and Joshua if you read this specific review I'd appreciate a shout out on SDFTSB Charlie English.

Just Not for me

I realize books need to develop by bringing new characters and situations.., but this holds none of the the continuity of books 1-4 . I don’t understand why this wasn’t marketed as a new stand alone series. It just didn’t Hold my attention, which is a bit of a shame because these are two of my favorite authors.

Bitterly disappointed…

Commune 1-4 was /is still some of the best constructed/written fiction I’ve read with some of the most sumptuous characters I truly came to care about in any literature. I loved them and have reread them many times now. Commune 5 was a mistake. Characters have not been developed, the story is shambolic and much of the dialog is inane! RC Bray has delivered so many phenomenal performances but I don’t think he was fully bought into this and it became difficult to separate certain characters. This is no where near Jake, Billy, Amanda or Lizzy…I honestly regret reading commune 5 and feel so disappointed ☹️

ABSOLUTELY A-MAZ-ING

it's not a continuation of Book 4 and the Jake series, its mostly new characters. it is however the same style, depth of character development and accuracy that you'd expect from Joshua Gayou, with a pizazz of Devon C Ford.
I loved it. I loved the fact that there were black people in the main characters. I loved getting to "know " new characters. I didn't like that someone killed off 1 of my favourite characters (listen to find out who)
I felt like I was visiting a friends kitchen party, having beers with a new group that felt familiar. it's dead good, and stuff. you won't regret listening if you love Gayou or Ford

Commune +

I can see why people thought this would be a continuation story. Should change the title to Commune: xxxx. That said, the characters were interesting, had some depth and the writing was pretty good. Thought some elements could have been fleshed out more. Fairly good read.

An awesome next step in the series

Two of my favourite authors coming together to write in one of my favourite series of novels. I've just finished it and its time for a re-listen already.
A very compelling story.
