Publisher's Summary
Garrett Goodlove used to be an arrogant criminal defense attorney with a drive to win at all costs. But a pair of tragic events threw him into a bottomless depression, and he retreated into the practice of family law. Now he tries to settle cases in ways that make everyone happy. He’s a nicer person, but has he lost his edge?
His kinder, gentler life is disrupted when the police arrest his estranged twin sister Carly. She’s accused of shoving her husband off a cliff into the storm-tossed Pacific Ocean. Worse, the vicious detective on the case has a grudge against her and has vowed to send her to prison, even if he has to cheat to do it.
Carly, deaf since birth, refuses to be defended by anyone other than her twin brother. But the intense connection that binds the siblings tells Garrett that she may not be revealing everything she knows. If Garrett can’t keep this new stress from pushing him back into depression, the defense will fail, condemning his sister to an isolated life in prison, cut off from the deaf community she needs.

Just lost a whole Sunday afternoon
to this book!
I binged it from start to finish, I didn't want to shut it off!
I'm a huge fan of the legal genre, name an author and chances are I have read at least one of their books, it is so good to have another author to add to the list!
The way the story is told is very fluid, not something I expected when I realized that one of the characters could only communicate via A.S.L. The depth of knowledge Mr. Macy has on the subject is impressive. It feels like he has experienced living this first hand, not as someone who did a bit of research to add it to character's story line.
All the characters are well developed and each has a story line that you want to be invested in. I am hoping this will become a franchise, we could use some new talent out there in this genre. I want to get to know the folks in the story better! If you are a M. Connelly fan....pay attention...LOL.....once you hear something toward the end of the story you'll get why I am writing this!
This isn't a "heavy drama", points had me laughing out loud as my dogs and husband looked at me like I was nuts.
Couple of times I snorted iced tea, the chuckles kinda come out of no where.
It's sorta Boston Legal screw ball comedy without Denny Crane.
Nick Sullivan is a fantastic 5 star narrator.
I first heard him when I got hooked on the Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series.
The guy is a pro!
He has a solid handle on all the accents used along with deftly handling nuances and inflection. If you are someone who doesn't enjoy a single gender reading for both genders....don't let that stop you from grabbing this story. He doesn't even TRY to "fake" a female voice...so much easier on the ears then narrators who try to force a gender sounding tone.
Now the part I really don't want to write, but need to.
I got this book free (Audiobook Boom) with the promise of an honest review.
I WISH I'd purchased this book so I didn't have to add this to my review...since I know some folks can look at a review with such a disclaimer as possibly not being all that authentic or honest.
I'm tellin ya...if you enjoy a good legal theme that wraps up well, isn't heavy drama, enjoy having your funny bone tickled in the midst of a great legal story line.......get this book!
You'll be hooked! Now I am just wondering when Mr. Macy will have another book ready to go! Soon I hope!!

Ok story; narration not so much
I love a good legal thriller. By and large, this was a very good story, good mystery, but there were times when the narration left me realizing that the whole thing would have come across better if it hadn’t sounded so wooden in places. He did very well with certain character dialogue, but often sounded so robotic in other places, it was off-putting. However, even that being said, really enjoyed the book, and will read the next one.

Excellent! I couldn't stop listening!
This, by far, is one of the best books I have ever read. The characters come to life. The author brings the characters to life. He also gives background on each character. There is good correlation between the characters and the courtroom drama. It has kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who share an interest in courtroom dramas. If I could have given a higher number of stars I would have!

Too much detail
This was a very predictable story. The characters were described well but the plot was easy to determine. I think there should have been more information on the other cases beside the main one.
The narrator did a good job using different voices and tones to distinguish who was talking.

Such a great listen!!!
Have you ever listened to a song for the first time and just knew it was special? That was this book. Two sentences in and I was hooked!!!
This is a murder mystery but it's not dark. I'm not sure how the author managed it but this whodunnit was funny and light with some very mirthful moments. There are some bad things happening to good people and vice versa but it plays out more in the background - front and center was a well-written gem that just happened to involve murder.
The narrator was RC Bray-like. He had just enough bass in his voice to give this listen a special brand of special. He was part boy-next-door, with a splash of football hero, rolled into Perry Mason. It totally worked! Sullivan performed the other cast of characters with the same kind of multi-faceted detail.
I should also add that the whodunnt was AWESOME!!

A Top Quality Legal Mystery.
I literally couldn’t get enough of this book. Not only is this book brilliantly written but it really does have everything. There are great characters, a compelling mystery, mental health problems, tradegies, vendettas, a murder and a trial! Al Macy clearly understands the legal procedures involved too and has woven a mystery that had me hooked from the off. Almost from page one I liked the characters in this book, not least of all the main character Garrett Goodlove. There’s a warmth to him that pulled me in. There’s a lot of history to his ‘back-story’ from the death of his niece and the loss of his wife to his time as a tough defence lawyer. The supporting cast of characters are just as well crafted and each brings something new and interesting to the story. Best of all is the author's ability to avoid writing cliches, be it characters or plot. The pace of the story never labours and skips along with each scene revealing more of what is really going on. Basically, it’s great.
A quick google search reveals that Nick Sullivan, who reads this audiobook, has more than 450 titles to his name as narrator. It’s easy to see why as he breathes real life into each and every one of the characters in this book. He is one of those narrators that would draw you in to even the most mundane book so to couple him with this treat from Al Macy is a recipe for brilliance. Every character has their own ‘feel’ and his skill making them sound a little different from one another made it a relaxing listen. Top quality from both author and narrator alike, highly recommended.

A Great Story, with a Great Narrator
First of all, I had read this book myself previously and really enjoyed it. The story is excellent, and the characters well rounded. There are interesting aspects to their characters which sets the story apart from more run of the mill stories. I don't want to spoil the story by giving crucial plot details so will recommend you listen for yourself.
Previously, I have not been a fan of audiobooks, as a voracious reader, averaging a book a week or so, I always felt I wasn't 'reading,' that it was cheating somehow. However, having been asked to try it and give an honest opinion, I have been pleasantly surprised. The narrator is excellent; he has a rich, warm voice. Once I had got used to listening rather than reading I have really enjoyed it. Journeys to work are the perfect time and place to listen, I am disappointed to have to stop. I will certainly try more.

An engaging story well told
Both the story (which I had previously read) and the performance by Nick Sullivan were very good - the only thing that I personally found broke the flow was the inclusion of the chapter headings in the narration - I guess that this is a personal dislike. I can recommend this audio book but would not recommend trying to follow the plot while driving.
N.B. I received this audio book free in exchange for an unbiased review.
