Publisher's Summary

Titan was one of the nation's most loved and respected Heroes, until an infidelity scandal tore his image and family apart. After decades spent out of the limelight, Owen Daniels has decided to take up the mantle of Titan once again to try and make amends for his years away. Unfortunately, the Titan Scandal is still common knowledge, and no Hero team wants such a polarizing figure.

With no other options, Owen is forced to take a job overseeing a group of corpies, corporate-sponsored Supers who do rescue work...as long as there are cameras around. Between a team that doesn't want him, fellow Heroes who don't trust him, and a nation that might not be ready to forgive the sins of the past, the return of Titan could prove even harder than the scandal that drove him away. But Owen will have to push on, because his new city is far from a peaceful one.

A mysterious enemy is attacking Heroes and growing steadily stronger. An enemy that only the once-legendary Titan might be able to stop. If he can manage to stick around this time.

Doesn't spoil upcoming Super Powered books!

I was both eagerly anticipating and dreading Corpies release. If you've finished Year One have no fear, the spoilers in Corpies are very, very minor. Time-wise it seems to take place during Super Powereds Year Three, but it avoids all but two very minor spoilers, one of which is painfully obvious and the other very easily missed.

The book is great. It does a lot of great world building, giving a wealth of information about the world of Super Powereds and how it works. The story itself is as original a super hero story as I've ever read. It really deserves a place along side Watchmen (graphic novel, not the dreadful movie). I'm not sure if Drew is planning to continue the story of Titan and/or the corpies, but I'd read it in a second.

Wow, loved it!

I've read the two Super Powered books, and enjoyed them--they seem almost written for use as Audible titles. For the first time I realized that audio books may be driving certain areas of literature. I like long books with great characters and clever, innovative, worlds.

This one starts on an awkward premise, but it never becomes uncomfortable. I don't like sex mixed into my action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi novels, and this book doesn't cross the line. It maintains the issue as a personal challenge the main character deals with--and like so much of the story, shows how character and determination are what makes a person awesome, and that sexuality is just a part of a very complex person. It isn't about this--but it is addressed.

I came away having really enjoyed the book and having great respect for the author as he dealt with real world issues in a very fictional--yet enjoyable--world where heroes are part of the people landscape.

Highly recommend all three books--with this one as good as the other two.

Bring on more.

More than One Level

I'd doubt an author who undertakes writing Super Hero fiction is striving for great depth and most readers in this genre aren't expecting that either (I certainly wasn't when I picked up this book) so it was a pleasant surprise to me to finish Corpies:Super Powereds Spinoff, 1 and realize that I got a some life lessons to muse over as well as a really fun read. And, this was done with a light touch throughout the book so that it never felt preachy or condescending.

Owen Daniels (Titan) left the Super Hero scene when he was awkwardly "outed" as a gay man and you might think the life lesson subtext is just about life style tolerance. Surprisingly, that's only a small part of the narrative. Drew Hayes has actually encompassed several different examples of people learning to be true to themselves and move on past mistakes. That's all wrapped up in some genuinely engaging characters, interesting battle scenes, good world-building, and a lot of humor. I am sure one of the attractions for me was that Owen is not a kid. Doesn't matter what has happened in your life, we all have the challenge of mid-life reassessment and I could identify with him. I also have to add that I LOVED a book that was truly entertaining for a full NINETEEN hours.

Kyle McCarley does a great job with character voices and dialog. His style in reading the narrative passages is a bit "announcer-ish" which took some time to get used to, but I liked the performance quite well overall.

I haven't read the Super Powereds series, but I probably will now. I will certainly be looking for Book2 of this Spinoff series.

Titan is my Hero

Titan is my hero and I'm grateful to the author for this volume. Without pandering or resorting to depressing tropes, Mr. Hayes has delivered, in my opinion, his best work yet in the Super-Powereds setting. If you haven't listened to SP Years 1 and 2, I recommend you do so before starting this volume. It's a stand-alone piece, but you'll enjoy it more that way. You can listen to Corpies confidently without fear of spoilers of SP Year 3. If you're a SP fan, I strongly recommend reading Corpies *before* Superpowereds Year 3. Again, not strictly necessary, but the flow works and it's more enjoyable that way.

I hope that we'll see more of Titan and the others in this volume in the future, but I also hope that the author will continue to explore tangents leading off the Super-Powereds line. They lead to amazing places.

You should listen to this book.

A Distant Second

Not a bad book, it was performed well and had solid writing I have come to associate with Mr. Hayes. The only thing is the cast is just not as memorable or enjoyable as the HCP students from Superpowereds. I do love though that we have a solid, real, and likeable gay super hero who finds romance and a second chance at redemption.

Just Finished and I saw it says Book 1????!!!!

I love this narrator and I love this author. I'm waiting for Super Powereds Book 4 to hit audio. I might get impatient and just read the damn thing.

Life Lessons

Although fiction, we need heroes that can pick themselves off the ground. In an era where public shaming has become fashionable and ruining lives commonplace, I am proud to enjoy fiction that speaks to the heart of what it is to be human.

Great read

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great addition to the Superpowered story arc. I was emotionally drawn in to the story and even found myself cheer and cry at different parts. If you like alt universe where superheroes are really then this is one you will like. It is well thought out and answered many questions I had as it went along. I found the initial shaming instance a little far fetched but I'm looking at it through current time eyes so maybe when it was written that wasn't the case. I did appreciate that it wasn't all about that but only one component in the book. I hope the writer ties the two story arcs together at some point. All and all a rear read in my opinion

Great addition really opening the word up

This is 1st introduction to the world outside of Landers. It introduces you to the outside world of super heroes and the main villain the press just like the real world.

As always our fabulous narrator did an excellent job.

If this is your first listen I suggest between books 2 and 3 is the best time to listen.

Main Character is Gay.

I love Drew Hayes books. Their funny, geeky, and have solid stories.

That said, if I knew the main character was gay I wouldn't have bought this book. The description doesn't mention that at all, and it threw me when that part came clear.

I stuck through it and was really happy with the story. There's only one or two parts that bothered me, were another guy was trying to woo Titan.

That aside Titans internal conflicts and reasoning are universal, and you really connect with the character.

I really did love the story.

Hands Up, I'm a Drew Hayes fan !!

Would you listen to Corpies again? Why?

I bought Corpies because I listened and enjoyed the 'Super Powereds' series (and yes, that is the correct spelling :) It has a nice overlap and takes a fringe character from that series and puts him centre stage in Corpies. I will definitely re-visit the whole series in the future (so many other new books to listen to though)

What other book might you compare Corpies to, and why?

I'm struggling to give you a comparable book, so I'll throw you a curve ball.. Check out Peter Clines '14' Fantastic story and great narration by Ray Porter, you will love it

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Who doesn't love a fight with a building sized Automaton

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me chuckle at times, I'm an old misery guts, I don't do laughing :)

Any additional comments?

Another Powereds spinoff will be greeted with pleasure

Awesome book and narration

I’ve listened to the whole super powereds series . The narration and writing is great , the storyline is great and the pacing is perfect . Lots of humour , action and character building that makes it one of my fave series so far . “I’ve listened and read a lot “ the narrator brings the characters to life in a way that very few in the business are able to do and makes an already great story that bit better .

This as a stand-alone book is really good but also is brilliant for any fans of the original series to get a few Easter eggs and more insight into some of the characters from the main series.

Highly recommend

legendary side story

This book is so well written it can become it's own series in it's own right. The characters have loads of depth and are loveable. They all show great progression and the love for their trade.
I love this as much as the powereds series and wish the author decides to continue this series with H*** as the MC.

narrator did a fab job!

What a great story! who could ask for more

I listened to this out of ordered and had finished the Superpowereds Vol1-4 first so spoilt the odd few reveals but loved every second of it.

Now I don't know what to do with myself after being drawn into the Hero&Corpie world for about 240hours of listening I feel lost 😅. I want to listen to more and maybe 1 day Drew will carry on and we'll get more of a glimps but for now a big thanks to Drew Hayes for writing one of my fav series I've ever had the joy to read/listened to!

A Super Powered Spin off!

This is a brilliant spinoff book that takes place slightly before and during Super Powereds Year 3. It gives the reader a wonder view of the Super World outside Lander's HCP and follows a character introduced fully in year 2. (He was mentioned and referred to in year 1, but not on stage as it were) The story is solid and really helps build the over all world outside Lander.

Damnit Drew, why did you have to abandon this worl

I read this after the complete series, in fact I waited nearly 6 months before listening to it...
I adored those kids and their adventures, so I wanted to saviour this one and by gods did it delivere.

stepping out of the usual characters and behind the eyes of Titan was handled perfectly, Drew shows us perfectly how even a hero that those who have worked with believe to be neigh on indestructible has fears, pains, regrets and at times even the humble can be arrogant...
This book takes a look at power and shows us how it is only a bigger responsibility to those that choose to do good...
The grasp that Drew Hayes has on the human condition and his ability to put it into words and take you on a journey of discovery is beyond description and will ALWAYS leave me wanting more

Kyle does an excellent job of giving everyone a unique voice and hitting that voice again and again making me able to know who is speaking without their name ever being mentioned, a feat few other VAs can lay claim to...

Excellent

loved this book, I listened to it out of order having finished the 4 books in the main series before I started on this one. I really hope we get some more spinoff books now the main story has been wrapped up. The narrator's performance was great as usual but if I had to nit pick a couple of his voices were the same as characters from the main story.

Love it

After reading year 4 of super powereds I was really craving more super hero books and this hit the spot, well written, with unique relatable characters that are separate but not detached from the super powereds storyline. Now I only wish for some stories or comics like this for Vince and the rest of that squad from their hero adventures.

Great story!!!!

After listening to superpowereds year 1, 2 & 3, And loved them!!!! I decided that this one was worth a go, I was a little worried that there may be a particular agenda being pushed, and I don't like agendas being pushed on me, but because the other books were so good I decided to give it a go anyway.
I am pleased that there was no agenda pushed, the story is simply about Titan, and how he dealt with his decisions, both good and bad, it especially dealt with how he pieces his life back together.
I loved the book and can't fault it, I was sad when it ended.....
Also Kyle McCarley is a masterful story narrator, his voices are so consistent and his range is incredible. He is now among my three favourites.
