Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Kitty Charing's life-changing inheritance comes with a catch.

Her eccentric and childless guardian, Mr. Penicuik, is leaving Kitty all of his vast fortune - but with one condition. She must marry one of his five grand-nephews. However, Kitty's clear favourite - the rakish Jack Westruther - doesn't appear at all interested in the arrangement. To make Jack jealous, Kitty impulsively convinces his cousin, the kind-hearted and chivalrous Freddy Standen, to enter into a pretend engagement.

But the more time she spends with Freddy, the more Kitty wonders whether Jack is the right choice after all....

Wonderful romp, narration a little robotic

This story is just so much fun. One of the most delightful, funny and entertaining of Heyer’s stories

The narration was a little peculiar. I felt intonation was often off and the speech stilted like a robot. Certain words like Phaeton wore pronounced in an odd way. But once I got used to it I was able to allow the lively story to carry me off.

Love this version

Georgette Heyer is beyond compare and I've always enjoyed this book. However Raj Ghatak really brought the story to life. Giving Dolph an Irish accent was fantastic! I will definitely listen to this again. Can he please narrate all Georgette Heyer novels!?

Great fun.

I love this book. The Penguin recording is really great. In particular Raj Ghatak reads Dolph superbly. I was so glad there were no loud music interludes this time.

Equally as good as the previous Audible version

I love the previous version of this book, sold on Audible by Phyllida Nash, and listen to it often. I purchased this one as I love the story and wanted to compare them. This is equally as good - but in places sounds like a different story due to the new voices for much loved characters. In other recent books the comparisons have been awful - but this is a keeper!! I love Lord Dolphinton having an Irish accent in this version, which brings out a different character. Similar can be said for Freddie and Devron. Now I can pick which version I want to listen too on a wet winters night.
A pleasant listen to an excellent Georgette Heyer story.

Glorious!

This is one of my favourite Heyer stories. I was anxious that it had been rerecorded but Raj Ghatak has done a fantastic job. He is comfortable with Heyer's language, understands all the nuances of the plot, has an array of wonderful accents and seems to enjoy telling the story. I'm now a fan and will watch out for things he does in the future. Raj, thank you.

Excellent listening

I bought this version by mistake thinking I had lost my beloved Phyllida Nash version, and at first suffered from something of a culture shock on hearing such a different voice. But I was interested to hear a fresh interpretation and gradually found there were still plenty of laughs. I gained a whole new insight into Kitty's powers of emotional blackmail!

Excellent narration.

Remarkable use of different voices to distinguish the different charcters made listening to this story a delightful experience.

Dodgy reading but...

not the worst I've heard. ignore the weird pronunciation of various words, lack of vocal definition between the cousins at the beginning - and that Dolph has been given an Irish accent - and let the usual brilliance of GH shine through. I just wish more readers would recognised the respect these titles deserve and that Audible would get Matt Addis to do all the re-records

Excellent narration

Narrator brings to life all the fun and humour of this delightful story. The best female voices I have heard from any male narrator. Going to look for more books by him. Why didn’t they use this narrator for lots more of georgette heyer’s books instead of the rubbish ones?

Interesting to see Jack, who would usually be the hero, being cast as the villain

Entertaining romp

Another winner from Ms Heyer. At times laugh out loud funny. I particularly enjoyed hearing the slang of the time. Have deducted stars due to the strange robotic narration. He really does sound like the automated voice “you now have 3 options”. Don’t know why the audiobook producer did not pick up on this. Richard Armitage’s narration of another GH novel is PEERLESS in comparison and it’s a pity he wasn’t asked to do this one too.

Infuriating narration

This narrator may be tolerably good at different voices and accents, but he unerringly picks the wrong word to stress in almost every sentence. Heyer’s cleverly constructed prose and the conversation and humour of her characters is totally mangled. Though I tried hard I couldn’t bear to listen beyond an hour because it was so exasperating.

Wonderful story, shame about the reader

I love this story, it's so lovely and funny and I really enjoyed it but it was such a shame about the reader. He sounds so robotic, although he does all the voices reasonably well, they all sound very un natural, a bit like a news presenter and he mispronounces words which is frustrating.

A lively story of an ingénue

Kitty Charing takes her chance to join London society by talking one of her guardian’s grand nephews into a sham engagement. The innocence resulting from her country upbringing combined with her wish to help others in trouble leads her be involved in situations where she is made aware that all is not necessarily as it seems. The voice acting is very good and captures each character well. I enjoyed this new rendition of an old favorite tale from Georgette Heyer and will listen to it again.

Great Fun!

Thoroughly enjoyed this narration by Raj Ghatak- he did all the voices so well, I was laughing out loud! One of my favourite Georgette Heyers. I’ve listened to this one twice already.
