Publisher's Summary

What if I told you there was work? I’m sure you wouldn’t believe me, and for good reason!

It’s easy to see how difficult relationships can be. If there was a totally effective method for happy, healthy relationships out there, surely someone would have packaged it up and sold it by now, right?

What is Couples Therapy and What is Couples Counseling? “Couples therapy” and “couples counseling” usually mean the same thing. There is no difference between them on a technical level.

While couples therapy can be a great way to reconnect with your partner or a magic recipe for making a relationship end the differences between you, there are many ways to make sure you keep the spark alive and the relationship healthy without seeing a professional. There are many resources out there that draw from theories or research in couples therapy.

It’s never too late (or too early) to start putting a little more effort into your relationship. If you would like to improve your connection, choose one or two of the activities and exercises described below to practice with your partner.

How to Know If You Need Marriage Counseling

If your marriage is having problems, you definitely should not wait too long to seek professional help. It may be hard to find the right counselor with the skills to help your relationship, but they are out there and willing to help. There are ways to to find a counselor specializing in marriage or couples therapy. You may have to meet with more than one to find the right fit. There are also ways to gauge if counseling will actually work for your marriage. Fortunately, we do have some information on the types of couples that get the most, and the least, from marriage counseling.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • Did you marry at an early age?
  • Did you not graduate from high school?
  • Are you in a low-income bracket?
  • Are you in an inter-faith marriage?
  • Did your parents divorce?
  • Do you often criticize one another?
  • Is there a lot of defensiveness in your marriage?
  • Do you tend to withdraw from one another?
  • Do you feel contempt and anger for one another?
  • Do you believe your communication is poor?
  • Is there a presence of infidelity, addiction, or abuse in your marriage?

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions, then you are statistically a higher risk for divorce. It does not mean that divorce is inevitable, it may mean that you have to work much harder to keep your relationship on track. Those couples who have realistic expectations of one another and their marriage, communicate well, use conflict resolution skills, and are compatible with one another are less at risk for divorce.

Don't Wait to Get Help

If you think your marriage is in trouble, do not wait. Seek help as soon as possible. Plan to budget the money and time in this treatment. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get your relationship back on track. Be sure to find professional couples counseling or attend a marriage course or weekend experience as soon as warning signs appear.

The narrator’s pronunciation of words was distracting but the content was very good and enlightening!

Narration is awful

The narration is too robotic. The cadence is choppy. There is no flow. I couldn’t follow along because the narrator’s delivery was too distracting. This might be a great book. But I couldn’t listen long enough to appreciate the content.

There are a number of exercises for a couple.

There are a number of exercises for a couple, to give some feedback specifically for the reader. There are a lot of them, one after each chapter, so probably you don't want to do them all. But its a great jump off point for a couple to get going on his theories. There is no ONE book that can pinpoint human behavior , especially not for two different people. But this one shows some empirical basis for his ideas, and for that reason, it sets it apart. Definitely worth listening.

A Must need for All Couples

Our marriage counselor highly recommended this book, and now we know why. It has given us the confidence and tools to make our relationship wonderful. A great resource for couples considering marriage or for those just wanting to make their marriage better.

Practical, solid advice

Takes him a long time to get the the points but once he does it gets very valuable. The beginning is like “we get it, it’s scientific...you’re not just guessing, now get to the point.” But then again, I’m impatient.

GREAT book to listen together!

This book is GREAT - with lots of exercises to do with your spouse, and ways to identify the individual issues that you may be facing in your marriage so you can focus where you need to. Also has simple ways to just be kinder to each other - highly recommend reading this together as a marriage strengthening activity!

I have bought and recommended this book

I have bought and recommended this book to just about everyone I know. Love this book. wife and I read it while I was deployed as well as other couples in the unit, it is not a counseling type book, its more in line with common sense things and it really changed how I communicated with everyone around me not just my wife.

A really, really great book.

This book should be required reading for anyone considering marriage, and for all married couples having problems. If it was, the divorce rate would plummet. So much common sense and wisdom. A really, really great book. Quite possibly the best and most useful that I have ever read. In my opinion, if you purchase this book, you will consider it to be the best investment that you have ever made. Read it with an open mind and it will change your life.
