A series of bizarre occurrences suddenly plague the island of Cielo Nublado. A dead whale washes ashore riddled with enormous bite marks. A fishing charter is reported missing, jet skiers vanish, and a yacht is found mysteriously ravaged after some kind of enormous impact. Chief of Police Nico Medrano tries to investigate the matter. His search for answers puts him on a collision course with an 80-foot predator, long thought extinct. Using the DNA of ancient creatures preserved in the Arctic, he had genetically engineered one of the most remarkable species of sea creature to ever exist: the Serpent Eel. Believed to possess the cure for countless diseases, the creature holds great promise for the medical community. All goes awry when the beast escapes containment. With a rapid growth rate and remarkable physical evolution, the beast travels to the coastal town of Spiral Bay. There, the creature designed to save human life instead starts taking it.

After awakening on a boat, he is reunited with the same fireteam he commanded in the military. Very quickly, it becomes clear that someone chose them for a reason.

Publisher's Summary
It was supposed to be a simple bank robbery. Quick. Clean. Efficient. It was none of those. With police searching for them across the state, a band of criminals hide out in a desolate cabin on the frozen shore of Lake Shadow. Isolated, shrouded in thick forest, and haunted by a mysterious history, they thought it was the perfect place to hide.
Tensions mount as they hear strange noises outside. Slain animals are found in the snow. Before long, they realize something is watching them. Something hungry, violent, and not of this world.
In their attempt to escape, they found the Creature of Lake Shadow.

Early Novel?
After having listened to his book Thresher by this author which was excellent, I thought I would give one a try. This one is quite a mess. He seems to be trying to push two story lines together (crime and monster) and neither gets resolved well. It seems that this may have been an early novel by the author before her learned to write a good one. The narrator's voices are generally good except that he gives the most evil of the bad guys a voice like the cartoon version of Cactus Jack which makes him sound more funny than scary. And don't get me started on how bad and lazy the ending is.

Dumbest Ending Ever
The narrator was okay. The story was a cross between a crime story, a sci-fi horror attempt, and the dumbest romance entanglement. Oh, and the ending, after wading through over 6 hours...really? That's the ending?!

A lot of reaching and stretching
A protagonist bank robber who accessory to murder that the author paints as a guy with a conscience and maybe even a bit chivalrous. It did not work for me at all.
An alien that is attracted to a human female as a mate to replace the one that died from his species. That worked less for me.
Finally - the gore gets to a point where it’s so over the top it is comical. Way too much of that detail and detracted from an already struggling story line.

Worth a listen but wish it was better.
Don't get me wrong. I listened to the whole book, and enjoyed it, as I would an episode of some TV crime drama or SiFi Channel horror schlock. On the plus side he took a many times done premise and plotted it well enough to overcome any "been there, read that" nonsense. Furthermore the action scenes were well done, the suspense pretty well handled and ending a surprise.
Given these positives I was a bit disappointed when it didn't deliver more. The potential was there. The characters in particular had the could have made it a much better book. I wanted to care about them. But despite intriguing outlines they were for the most part not developed and painted in broad stereo typical strokes. And those stereo-types were jarring in places (how many times can the female lead scream and back away?)
Am I being too harsh? Perhaps. If so it's because the writer has real potential and the book didn't live up to my expectations. I will however try other writing by him to see how he develops.
