Publisher's Summary

Delve into the mind of Critical Role’s most charming villain in this original novel that chronicles Lucien’s early life and his fateful meeting with the Mighty Nein.

Lucien has always been able to spin a bad situation to his advantage. From his childhood on the dangerous streets of Shadycreek Run to his years living off the grid and learning blood magic from the Claret Orders, the charismatic blood hunter will find a way to get the upper hand.

When Lucien is on a job in the frozen wastelands of Eiselcross with his fellow mercenaries, a rough-and-tumble crew called the Tombtakers, fate leads him to a mysterious journal in the ruins of an ancient city. The book speaks of the Somnovem, nine beings who can grant Lucien power beyond imagining—if he is able to find them and free them from captivity.

Intrigued by this opportunity, Lucien pores over the journal—but the more he reads, the stranger things become. The nine whisper to him in dreams and waking visions. Time slips away, along with Lucien’s grasp on reality. And tattoos of red eyes begin appearing on his skin. . . .

With the ability to reshape the world within his grasp, Lucien ignores all warning signs. He has always bent fortune to his will, and nothing—not even death—will stop him now.

Written by New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein—The Nine Eyes of Lucien explores the meteoric rise and fall of one of Critical Role’s most notorious and tragic figures.

SPOILERS Alert

This is a great book with many great voice actors contributing to its creation.

The reason for the SPOILERS Alert title of the review is that if someone doesn't want spoilers for Campaign 2 for Critical Role, then they should not be listening to this book. There are major plot reveals at almost every turn on this book.

I recommend this book for any Critter up to date with C2 and looking to hear the story from another point of view, while still having our lovable nerdy-ass voice actors narrating the composition.

Masterfully written and narrated.

I love a good "the protagonist has always been doomed" story and this one is very well done. The pace-which is a bit slow to start with- picks up as the story hurls towards the tragic conclusion, but the characterization is ON POINT, the writing is witty and engaging, deeply disturbing at times, and everyone is doing such a great job with the narration. Such a treat for the fans!

Best book I've ever read so far, stunning.

It was amazing to hear Lucien's perspective of the mighty nein encounter. Learning how similar he was to Molly before the nine eyes was surprisingly and really changed my perspective on him.

Great for anyone interested in Molly or Lucien

I was really looking forward to this one. Mighty Nein is my favorite arc so far and I was interested to see how Molly would grow and learning more about his past. When that was taken away I was disappointed, but so goes the nature of the game. Seeing Lucien emerge was very intriguing for me and I was very interested to see how everything played out, but even after the story was done I was still curious about his character. This book does a great job of filling in the backstory and letting you see inside his head as to why he did what he did and how it affected him. I loved seeing the details as to why everything happened, as well as seeing his personal struggle inside that you don't get to see in the game. I enjoyed seeing the story from another perceptive other than the Nein.

Robbie did a great job narrating Kith and Kin and he does an amazing job here too. He has an easy voice to listen to and does a great job of giving other characters their own voice in the story which brings it to life. I also love that the cast voice their own characters as well. A great listen!

Critical Role Continues to Tell Amazing Stories.

Great story and amazingly read by Robbie Daymond. This extra look into Lucien's past was a great guide to his future misdeeds.

Long may he reign!

A story true to the heart of the messages and sentiments that The Critical Role Foundation hold dear. Unquitting love, compassion, concern, and even forgiveness in the face of adversity. Having followed Critical Role through campaign 2, this made me chuckle in so many parts. Robby as the narrator couldn't have had a better pick. All in all, the family absolutely loves this!
