Story
When the body of a man is found dead in his remote, isolated home, DI Tom Janssen and his team struggle to understand what motive there could be to murder such an inoffensive, seemingly placid local character. The man lived alone and was well known in the community, but kept his distance from others, leading a haphazard way of life almost entirely off the grid. What secrets did he hide in his private life that might be worth killing for? As the team are about to understand, even the most nondescript of people can exist in a world darker than most of us will ever see....

In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed.

Publisher's Summary
In this brilliant debut, a psychologist finds herself drawn into the dark world of a serial killer - who may be closer than she thinks. Mulholland Books presents...Crossbones Yard.
Ray and Marie Benson killed 13 women before they were caught, tried and imprisoned. Five of their victims were never found.
Six years later psychologist Alice Quentin discovers a woman's body on the waste ground at Crossbones Yard. The wounds are horrifyingly similar to the Bensons' signature style. But who would want to copy their crimes?
When Alice is called in to consult, her first instinct is to say no. She wants to focus on treating her patients, not analysing the mind of a murderer.
But the body at Crossbones Yard is just the start, and the killer may already be closer than Alice knows.

Good start to a series
I enjoyed the story very much. I look forward to getting deeper into the characters in future books. I think, however, that the book is let down by the narrator. Her voice sounds much too mature for Alice, whose point of view we're hearing. I think a younger sound would serve the characters and story well. Looking forward to the next one.

Good story, but annoying heroine
This seemed so strange to me: the story was good; the background historical information was fascinating; the professional psychology of the protagonist seemed sophisticated; but the romance was an idiotic fantasy worthy of a rather dim13 year old, utterly ridiculous and rich in cliche.'And the heroiine's continual, reflexive negativity and scorn toward almost everyone she even glanced at was distasteful. (I keep typing because Audible requires more words.)

Brilliant
Would you consider the audio edition of Crossbones Yard to be better than the print version?
I rarely buy print books as my eyes aren't too brill so I wouldn't know.
Who was your favorite character and why?
If I told you that it would give away the ending.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
All of it. This is the best book I have listened to for quite a few months. Couldn't put it down - listened to it it all in one go. Gripping.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
London based Thriller with a sting in the tail.
Any additional comments?
I was beginning to get despondent as I had not found any new authors for quite a while - until this came along. Even then I wasn't sure about buying it because of the title, but it had good reviews so I gave it a go. I am so glad I did

Dull and uninspiring
This is a dull and lifeless book to listen to which adds nothing to the genre. The main protagonist is two dimensional and makes glaringly wrong choices time after time, she is not a flawed heroine, just an idiot.
The only character that is of any interest is Lola who manages to break up the monotony slightly with her flirting and eccentric behaviour, the police are just incompetent throughout the novel and I found myself drifting off and had to restart chapters repeatedly.
Perhaps it's because I've just read Samuel Bjork's new bestseller and I have been spoilt by the richly crafted characters in that but I implore you, don't waste your time, money or credits on this because it just isn't worth it.

Disappointing
The narrator sounds forced and totally inappropriate voice for this type of book. Definitely wouldn’t listen to anything narrated by her again. The story was slow, not very interesting. It’s unusual for me not to finish a book, but I finally gave up half way through. Not at all in the same class as the Cornish trilogy by the same author.

An absorbing listen
I begun by listening to book 5 in the series, Blood Symmetry and was so taken with the character of Alice Quentin that, upon finishing, I immediately purchased book 1. I was not disappointed as Crossbones Yard is a taut and well crafted book with detailed characters the reader/listener can really get to know and understand. In a million years I would never have guessed who the villain was, but once revealed, it really couldn't have been anyone else. Charlotte Strevens does an excellent job of bringing Ms Rhodes' characters and story to life and I'm excited to listen to the other books in the series.

Narrator too old
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If audible had chosen a narrator closer in age to the heroine.
Has Crossbones Yard put you off other books in this genre?
No I love the genre. This one is a dud, though.
What didn’t you like about Charlotte Strevens’s performance?
Her voice is way too old for the part.
What character would you cut from Crossbones Yard?
Not sure.
Any additional comments?
This is the first audible book I've given up on. Narrator totally miscast.
