It is an age when Valdemar is yet unfounded, its organization of Heralds yet unformed, and magic is still a wild and uncontrolled force. Publisher's Summary
Crown of Vengeance begins a new epic fantasy saga from New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory.
She is the unwanted spawn of a mad king and queen, her lands lost before her birth; her family - her very name - erased from history. Cursed by many, yet protected by an even greater curse.
She was born on a night of storm and terror, raised in protected concealment, then banished from the only home she had ever known - an ancient enemy's final stroke in a war begun centuries before.
Secret studies of hidden lore reveal the truth of the prophecy that heralded her coming. Dark dreams teach lessons of war and duty, of strategy and magecraft that she could not learn in a thousand lifetimes.
She does not have a thousand lifetimes. She has just one - and time is running out. For the prophecy spoke not just of her, but of a great Darkness that would destroy the elven kingdoms. A Darkness that is coming ever closer.
She is Vieliessar Farcarinon and she must save her people. Even if she must shatter custom and destroy the world she was born to rule.

Give it time...
The high fantasy elven language can be a bit much at first. Give yourself time, let the feel and emotion of the story take hold. This was a fantastic start to the prequel trilogy to the Obsidian Trilogy. Being thrust back into this world reminded me of how much I missed it.

Difficult listening
The story line theoretically was good but it was hard to follow and difficult to listen to. I gave up after chapter 5. The narrators always sounded angry and forceful which also made it difficult to listen to. I did not recognize Mercedes Lackey in this one and I have listened to most of her series novels and enjoyed them immensely.

I was sorry I bought this one at first, but not now.
I have been pleased with Mercedes Lackey prior to this. The Vincent Price style reading at the beginning and then, from time to time, made it less than pleasant. I could not listen to the whole book at first, but glad I went back and triedftried. Compelling story, but alien names made following difficult.

Absolutely Amazing!
I fell in love with the obsidian trilogy when I found it, and to have the history of the famed elven queen constantly referenced in the first 3 books made me so happy.
Yes the names are long and a bit confusing but as I listened and didn't focus on them I was able to separate who was who and what was what.
I had to remember that this was before the simplic names from the obsidian series, back when in lore things were long and proper to decern who was who. I personally loved it and it really helped me feel a part of the story. Can't wait for the next!

Audio makes this book so much better!
I read this in print just after it came out. I enjoyed it, but the long, complex Elvish proper names frequently got in the way of the actual story for me. Listening to Kate's excellent performance allowed me to let the names just be names and the story to shine. Hopefully she will perform the sequel due out in October.

Too much shouting
The book is probably 3.5, but I really did not like the reader. Almost all the lines are shouted. The narrative is about the only part that wasn't yelled. As far as the book is concerned it drags a lot. The character names are pretentious, and Tolkein rip offs. I'm listening to this book because the others set in this world were really good. This one is the back story and I keep slogging through it hoping it will pick up, but not so far. And frankly I don't much care if the dark elves kill them all.

Impossible. I'm not the memory man. There are so many impossible names to keep up with. I had no idea who was who and what their relationships to each other were. Way to confusing for me to try to fight through. I had to give up.
