Publisher's Summary

The book that revolutionized business communications has been updated for today's workplace. Crucial Conversations provides powerful skills to ensure every conversation - especially difficult ones - leads to the results you want. Written in an engaging and witty style, it teaches listeners how to be persuasive rather than abrasive, how to get back to productive dialogue when others blow up or clam up, and it offers powerful skills for mastering high-stakes conversations, regardless of the topic or person.

This new edition addresses issues that have arisen in recent years. You'll learn how to: respond when someone initiates a crucial conversation with you; identify and address the lag time between identifying a problem and discussing it; and communicate more effectively across digital mediums.

When stakes are high and emotions run strong, you have three choices: avoid a crucial conversation and suffer the consequences; handle the conversation poorly and suffer the consequences; or apply the lessons and strategies of Crucial Conversations and improve relationships and results. Whether they take place at work or at home, crucial conversations have a profound impact on your career, your happiness, and your future. With the skills you learn in this book, you'll never have to worry about the outcome of a crucial conversation again.

Great info; needs a cast, PDF and a website update

There is a TON of great information in here, that has made me rethink how I engage in difficult conversations. I chose the audio book because, quite frankly, I was approaching a highly critical conversation and did not have time to read the actual book. I often listen to books like this and didn't anticipate how difficult this one would be.

Gregory and Grenny generally did a great job of presenting the content. They sounded engaged and energetic, which is often lacking when researchers read their own books. They alternated who read each chapter, and I think it would have been more effective if they had split up the content more like a script. There are many examples in the book of conversations and how the tools could be used. It got confusing when the same reader was doing two different voices AND break-through narration. Having them share these examples, would have been more helpful, as would a third voice (even if it was the reader acting a third voice).

Even more importantly, this audiobook needs a PDF. There are a LOT of acronyms and steps to the recommendations, and for people like me who listen during the mundane tasks of life or while driving, it would have been so helpful to have had a glossary style PDF of these terms and concepts to refer back to.

Lastly, they refer regularly to their website as CrucialConversations.com. This is no longer their website. The new one is CrucialLearning.com. But it is hard to tell, because there are books and materials on it not from this group of authors, so it isn't clear if it is their website or a third party's. And some of the things they refer to require some hunting to find, which was frustrating.

If you are a strong auditory learner, give this book a listen. If not, you are gonna need to paper version.

couldn't keep going

Too much obvious stuff plus a sensational manner of narrating. maybe it got better but I couldn't get there.

Gave me a direction to row

Growing up in a home where conversations were usually disasters, I as an adult need a lot of help in this area. I wish there were more examples of conversations in relationships instead of workplace conversations. Maybe a separate book specifically for those more intimate family life conversations would be nice. Though I’m grateful for those who have researched this topic and identified specific actions that we can take to improve our conversation skills in all aspects of our lives. It’s a little overwhelming to compile all that you need to remember to do in order to have a successful conversation so I appreciated the author pointing us to two skills to start with. Right now I feel like I’m a little row boat in the middle of the ocean and I have a long way to row to get to land. It’s going to take a lot of work but I have the desire to improve and now I have direction. I know where land is thanks to this book and I think that makes all the difference.

Book ok, Narrator HORRIBLE

This book is ok, but the narrator they have reading the text has one of the most obnoxious and difficult to listen to voices I have ever heard in my entire life.

Painful Examples

Not novel concepts, and very painful readings of examples of fake conflicts. I tried, but couldn’t make it more than halfway through.

Good advice, but way too long

This book has solid common sense advice to be more self aware during conversations, and some techniques for diffusing conflicts and getting to mutually respectful conclusions. That part is great. Getting there is tedious in this book. Lots of contrived examples that don’t seem realistic, though they claim to be.

This could be a 5 star book if it had a simple summary of the techniques for easy reference, allowing listeners to bypass hours and hours of repetitive examples.

split brain

I truly think this book has great info. is there anyway it could be split into 2 books? one for working environments and another for personal? I felt like I had to shut off my brain for more than half of this book to focus on what I needed for my personal one

Loved everything about it

As the head of a 15 person team, this was just the message that I need to help my own continuous improvement in my approach to engaging in more productive dialogue. Really enjoyed the audiobook performance and (VERY!) highly recommend it to other leaders.
