Publisher's Summary

The War on Terror provides the backdrop for the thriller that introduces the roots of ultimate antihero, Max Ahlgren.

Captain Max Ahlgren is proud to be one of the first team commanders in the Marine Corps’ nascent MARSOC detachment. Finally, the Corps’ elite warriors are working alongside those of other branches, battling insurgents, not on the front lines but behind them.

After his first mission, however, Max learns he will be replaced as team commander. The new commander, Major Whitbeck, comes from 8th and I: Marine Barracks, Washington DC. His late father, a revered general, died in a terrorist car bombing. The commander is in Afghanistan for vengeance - and redemption. When the team infiltrates the ancient desert fortress of Kazindrak, hunting an elusive Al-Qaeda terrorist, Whitbeck reveals his ineptitude in combat.

Max’s fury grows as the body count rises. When the actual nature of the mission is revealed, Max gets a good look at the sordid underbelly of the War on Terror and sees firsthand what monsters men can become. If he is to survive, however, he may have no choice but to become one. Sometimes the greatest enemy is within.

Revenge is said best served cold It best high volt

This turned out much better than I thought and right off the top I do highly recommend this author and narrator. The story is well written and told you are brought into the story from the beginning to the end and in the end you find to are rooting for the main character then you have a major surprise that make you want to learn more.
Being ex military and even in normal life you meet or work for a boss who thinks that they are better than you and will do whatever they want to achieve their goal and the worst of this kind of incident is when you are in the military and overseas. This series so far starts overseas and you follow a major who is liked very much by his commander and the men under him. He finds he being replaced by a wet behind the ears major who has a bad attitude, thinks he above everyone and he knows all just because he a son of a general. His goal is not to work up to the point like his father but try and get it free just because of his name no matter what it cost. Before now his father had covered up his involvement in a complete platoon being wiped out in Iran by demoting him and moving to warehouse duty shortly after that his father killed it said by terrorists but as you listen you find out that may not be true. Now to the present after arriving he giving a quad of men to kill the person who was suppose to have killed his father but instead he gets most of the quad killed by his actions in a black ops mission.
To see what happens after I hope will check the series out and enjoy it as much as me.

Such a great addition

This novella is just SOOOO satisfying, and i love that it is basically Max's "beginning" to his whole CIA foray.

im kinda upset that there wasnt some grunt or something that referred to Whittaker as "dick licker" at least once, that would have been just so amazing😂😂

Waste of your time on earth to listen to

As a Vietnam Vet and someone who appreciates life, I feel like I just lost some valuable time on earth having listened to this dribble. Real Marines and military Veterans do talk like the characters in this book did. The story was weak, the characters were idiots and I feel somewhat stupid having listened to 93% of the book before realizing I was wasting my life on earth by doing so. I hope you read this before listening to it and sincerely hope you did not have to pay for the book or tape.

Ok as a former person in this field

I don’t know what I was expecting from this novel when I first got it, as a free download included with my membership from audible. But the ride I was on while listening was way more than I expected. I found myself being able to visualize certain parts of this book completely having been at these locations in real life. Some of the tactics and some of them things written about in here very true to life for me and I’ll probably end up reading the rest of the series now that I’ve gotten a hold of this prequel. Do you the whole story I felt the anguish the main character went through having gone through similar things in my career. The only criticism I have with anything in this book is for the producers to learn how to pronounce names of locations. I was constantly verbally correcting the narrator as he mispronounce things thru his narration but I would still rate than the narrator 10/10. The story I will give 10/10. And the production studios a 8/10 for failure to do their homework on the story, the real life mirror and send them to speech therapy classes to understand how words are pronounced.

Depressing

I wasn't prepared for the graphic violence and the depressing story. I am not new to this genre but normally authors mix some light with the dark so that the reader or listening doesn't feel the depression, the abys ... Kafer did a good job reading but I need the good guys to at least break even, this was just too depressing, I won't be listening to any more.

watch the language

No book needs this much foul language no matter the story. Most foul language comes from those who don't know how to express themselves. Clean up the language in favor of a good story

Cliche beginning, laughable ending

Cliche beginning, an unlikely, boring central plot and a laughable ending depicting both the protagonist and the Corps out of character.

I've got to say I didn't know where this story was going which is a good thing but the ending was so satisfying that it almost scared myself and how much pleasure I took in it I can't wait to see where this gentleman goes apparently Alaska

Enjoyable

A enjoyable novella that offers a back ground and character setting story into Max Ahlgren, which then set tone for the rest of the series. The Narrator - Jeffrey Kafer implements a goof job, but I did struggle from time to time listening to him as it’s hard to differentiate his Narrating voice from his Characters impersonation voices as at times they sound the same, which makes it sound like all one long dialogue. Would like to hear a few more special effects in the production to help break this up to prevent from switching off.

Narration ruins it

The narrator ruined this one for me. He has an annoying manner of finishing his sentences which became so distracting that I could not get to the end of the story.

A great short story full of action and action. One

A truely memorable story as I've been there and far to often incompetent officers are sent to lead veteran combat soldiers. A really good listen.
