Including stories from paradise and hard-won lessons in seamanship, Taleisin's Tales reflects back to the first miles Lin and Larry Pardey gained together on the second boat they built lovingly with teak carvel planking over sawn black locust frames. The book includes details from outfitting, provisioning, and final detailing during the early months Lin and Larry spent getting to know their new bluewater cruiser, as well as moments of melancholy as they let go of attachments to their first trusty boat.

Equipped with a new boat, a well-stocked toolbox, and the entire history of philosophic thought, he takes us as crew through squalls and calms deep into a laboratory of the universe that exists only out of sight of land. Funny, erudite, and at times deeply personal, Philosophy of Sailing explores who we are and how encounters with the unknown can be a path to revelation and joy.

Story
John Kretschmer is sailing’s practical philosopher - as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John’s adventures have taken him several times around the world.

"The tale of Carl Wake and the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer's audiobook is as perfectly shaped and flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever listened to of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man's failure and redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This audiobook is surely destined to become a classic."

Publisher's Summary
The cruising tale is full of the sights and sounds, the fragrances and native customs of foreign lands, especially Central American and the Caribbean. It is a story of a leisurely sail through the Gulf of Cortez and on through Panama Canal to the Azores and England. Cruising in Seraffyn is also a carefully thought out guide to living aboard a small boat, with fun and economy as the guiding principles. Four appendices provide data that is vital for anyone comtemplating long-distance cruising.

Still Relevant After Forty Years
The Pardey's, cruising legends who inspired countless others, write in a simple, light straight forward way that makes for enjoyable reading and/or listening - especially with Kitty Hendrix's excellent narration. Though the book recounts their adventures in the late sixties and early seventies, it still has some application to cruising today. Communities have changed, prices have changed, seas have become more crowded, but the joys and struggles of a couple working their way slowly and carefully from California to England still resonates. Especially in the appendixes, the Pardey's enumerate the very practical points to consider if one is interested in a life of cruising. Updated to the early 2000's, they bring to bear the results of surveying other world cruisers and present hard cold facts for a potential cruiser / sailor to consider before pulling anchor. It makes you take seriously their "motto": Go Simple, Go Small, Go Now.

An Incredible Journey
Cruising in Seraffyn is one of my favorite audiobooks. Lin and Larry Pardey set sail to cruise the Caribbean on their 24 1/2 foot self-built baby, Seraffyn. I say “baby” because Seraffyn was their baby. She was their home. Listening to this book made me feel as if I were right there with them. I could feel the excitement in all the prep work as they were getting ready for their first cruise to Mexico, Central America, and Panama,
When they set sail it was truly an amazing event. All the details they describe are not only fascinating but make me want to go sailing. I love the sea. The smells, the sights, the sounds.
Kitty Hendrix is my favorite voice actor. I’ve had the pleasure of listening to other work she’s voices and it’s always to perfection. She speaks very clearly and has just the right voice inflections and makes you feel like you’re right there. She has a smooth, even tone with great control. I look forward to listening to more of her work in the future. I highly recommend listening to this audiobook. It was exciting and breathtaking.

An old friend re-invented
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is the book that first got me into sailing years ago. I'm pleased to rediscover an old friend in the guise of this new audio edition. The narrator does an artful job, and the Pardeys' voices ring loud and clear. Ideal for listening while on midnight watch on the way to Bermuda, or in the car on the way to the gym. Tres cool.
What does Kitty Hendrix bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Ms. Hendrix is a first-rate narrator - ingratiating, subtle, easy to listen to.
Any additional comments?
"Must" reading - or "listening" - for any and all serious (or would-be serious) cruising sailors.

Fun but out of date to be of value
A great tale about bygone times. Going through the Panama Canal then was under ten bucks, today our boat cost $1800. The friendliness, so much a part of this tale, has long since gone and who can blame the islanders. Today you have to be very careful traveling the world albeit nothing has changed in terms of dealing with the weather. Kitty gives a great read so all power to her. If you just like sea tales then fine but it has almost no value these days in terms of cruising.

Is the narrator even human?
The performance by “Kitty Hendrix” of this sailing story is so wooden, so horrendous, it really sounds like a robot is reading. Yikes!
The story itself is just okay, and rife with errors- although that could be the “narrator bot” taking matters into its own “hands.”

I read the book for the first time over 20 years ago. I owned a little sailbost for a short time, but I guess it wasn't my time yet. Great audiobook if you love sailing...
Having listened to the Mediterranean Adventure and now this, I love what the Pardees have done, but sadly some of the narration lets it down. Pauses where there shouldn't be one, to help the sentence make more sense, and also lack of research on pronunciation. E.g. Ibiza - it's pronounced Ibeetha, and lead line, its led line, not leed line. Other occasions slip my memory. It's better overall than the Med Adventure, as there's other errors in that and lots of obvious studio cuts and changes in ambience.
Still, a great listen though and you feel you are there.
Richard.

Great narrative about the romance and realities of cruising life in a small boat with few luxuries.
Narrator's habit of making unnatural pauses after pronouns is distracting
