Story
The only possible thing that could make Morgan's world even more difficult happened. The Japanese fleet off the coast of California was wiped out. An even that Morgan and friends and family only knew about because of the radio broadcasts from the Radio Free Redoubt. So far removed from them it barely warranted notice. That is until the Chinese retaliated by launching a nuclear counter-strike against Mac Dill Air Force base. This, did warrant their attention and had the potential to profoundly impact their lives.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
The news is full of disturbing events today. There's war and rumors of war. There's the false recovery of the economy. Faith in the US economy is extremely low. Foreign banks have either slowed their purchases of Treasury Bonds or, in a few cases, begun unloading them. We have a current election that is rife with corruption, extreme partisanship, and outright fraud. It would appear the left in the country is ready to do about anything to see their candidate elected. While this is very concerning today, what does it mean to the election process as a whole? What will the next one look like? Does anyone believe they will actually improve? Or will the next batters up to the ultimate home plate simply make it even worse, take it even further down the rabbit hole?
In reality, it matters not who wins. They can be there for only eight years. But the election sets the precedent for the next one, and the next one will push the limits even further, if there is one.
We've all heard of the spooky bank holiday. This sort of thing usually happens on a weekend, and on Monday morning you simply cannot access your account. You have no access to your money. Don't think it can happen? Neither did the people of Greece. Or Germany when they were limited to 50 euros a day. What would you do? Do you keep cash on hand? Do you trust your bank? If you put $20,000 into the bank and then ask for $10,000 back, you have to fill out forms and justify your need for it. Then they tell the government about it, and you face further sanctions. Here in America, we think we're free. Well, we are currently listed as number 20 on the scale of freedom. Think about that. Number 20! Chile is ahead of us! But we have our guns, and all of those other countries don't. And indeed we do, for now. But what if they were to take those away? What do we do then? And before you say you would take to the streets and fight back, think for a minute what that really means. Then watch a few videos on Syria or Ukraine. It's all fun and games until someone puts a tank main-gun round through your house. What follows is just one idea of what this could look like. I'm not saying this is the way it would go. It's just some thoughts on it. On how people could act. What the government may do in response and how people might respond in turn.

Great new saga!
I have listened to all of the survivor series by this author and narrator. It took a bit to get into this book and get on board with the direction it was going. This is a different view on the collapse of our nation but just as with the "Home" series it is a viable and surreal tale of what our reality could easily become. Love the narrator- I hope Duke Fontaine continues to represent this author's voice.

Give me a reason to care about these people.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The main character, Daniel, seemed to be the least developed of an entire group of underdeveloped characters. Had I been part of this group, I would have left out of sheer boredom.
What could A. American have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Character development, likable and/or interesting characters, and a more compelling story.
Which character – as performed by Duke Fontaine – was your favorite?
Gene, I suppose, as he was the most skillful of the group.
Do you think Cry Havoc needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I don't see this one going anywhere. I hope he doesn't try to make a series out of it. It just feels like the author was trying to make a book out of a story that just wasn't there.
Any additional comments?
I read most of the Going Home series, and most of those books were better than this one. If I had to buy it again, I wouldn't.

New perspective for SHTF story
Still listening to the Home series, still enjoying them. That said, this is a completely different kind of story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Is it the best book I have listened to this year, no, but it was good enough to listen to twice, and I will listen to it again later. There is good information to be had, if you pay attention, love one of the storage ideas for instance. If you like A. American, you should like this audio book, and like another reviewer said, Duke Fontaine could make a grocery list sound good.

a weird reading style
I liked the story well enough, and learned a few tidbits, but the narrator got on my nerves. Or maybe he's a non-native speaker? Just two examples:
1) He tended to acCENT the wrong syLABle, saying things like "moving-BLANkets" were on the inside of a truck. Hmmmm... So some sort of curtain thing that billowed in the breeze? someone was shaking crumbs out of the blankets? OH! He meant MOVing blankets, i.e. blankets you'd use for protecting furniture during a move.
2) He also inserted pauses in crazy places like between two adjectives, which combined, meant one description, like "a small . . diameter-tree". Eh? what's a diameter-tree?
You get my drift. If things like this don't drive you crazy, you may well like this book.

Smart, Everyday people in an economic disaster
Would you listen to Cry Havoc again? Why?
Duke Fontaine is an excellent performer. Its a very contemporary story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Too hard to pick one, it is an ensemble cast.
What about Duke Fontaine’s performance did you like?
His characterizations are well crafted
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, It made me think which is much more important than a laugh or cry.
Any additional comments?
A very atypical post apocalyptic story. Normal people with a preparedness tilt, not super heros or six-gun toters. Real people from many walks of life, A great story from a gifted author.

Narrator is hard to listen to.
I will try to finish this but the narrator is grating on my nerves. He isn't a smooth reader. He begins a .....paragraph well and .....then...he fills it......with so ...many annoying pauses. I have tried speeding it up but that doesn't help. I do love this genre and am not a snob when it comes to narration but sometimes certain styles just bug me. I like the premise of this one and hope to manage to power through but I doubt I will since I have a few others of the same genre that I am enjoying now.

Creative EOTWAWKI
I quit writing reviews on EOTWAWKI books... got tired of saying negative things. That said the narration and audio was rough... but it was a clever and creative situation with a fresh perspective and interesting mix of characters. I enjoyed it. There is obviously a second book coming... but it wasn't an annoying cliff hanger and was long enough that I didn't feel cheated out of a credit. Nice work Mr. AA. I also really enjoyed The Dog Star and Sunfall recently, so there have been some better offerings in the EOTWAWKI library.

Missed opportunity
If you think Fox News and Info Wars are real news and blindly hate liberals this is for you. The strawmen of liberals taking your guns and social justice warriors working with the "Deep State" and with the corrupt Democrats in government is driven from the very start. This is ironic when it is currently the other side in power, working with other countries to undermine America and show record levels of corruption, pay to play and attacking allies.
The narration is great as usual and a highlight of these books. Having read all the Survivalist series, which are great, so far this seems like a copy and paste job with the characters been far too similar to previous books, even down to the put on English accent like Dalton. It was a missed opportunity, there was no need to go total tinfoil hat with conspiracies that would make Alex Jones shake his head. A financial collapse is a very real threat and doesn't need a ludicrous reason to happen and constant partisan nonsense made it very hard to palate.
I know most preppers come from one side of the aisle but there is no need to play to your base, it adds nothing to the story. Maybe in the next book we might get more of the gear and gun porn we like and less of the DHS and limp wristed liberals are evil narrative.

Another great informative story from A.American
I enjoyed the survivalist series & was hoping that this would be as good. It is. Lots of good info if you listen carefully. The only things that spoilt it a little were that "Daniel" is a bit slow on the uptake & a bit more character history would be good. I am happy to recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how our world may change in time
