The post-apocalyptic world isn't that bad. Sure, there are mutants. But, for the people of New Hope, daily life isn't so much a struggle of finding food or medicine as it is trying to find a new shortstop for their kickball team. This makes it difficult for a post-apocalyptic warrior to find work. Thankfully, an army full of killers is making its way to the peaceful town and plans to raze it to the ground. Only a fully trained post-apocalyptic nomadic warrior can stop them.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a scream. In the remote mountains of Northern Alaska, Dr. Riley Middleton and her team of archeologists discover a burial site containing mummified remains dating to the last ice age. None of them notice the warning carved into the entrance or realize that the tomb had been deliberately sealed from the outside until they’ve already released a virus that turns ordinary people into murderous monsters. But there’s something even more terrifying inside...something ancient...something unspeakably evil.

Publisher's Summary
John, Chris, and Erik are neighbors in the quaint subdivision of the Creeks of Sage Valley, Phase II. The three men happily live the typical suburban family life. Their only real problems have been with each other and the draconian rules of the HOA. But, all that changes when the dead rise from their graves and walk the Earth.
Now, they must reluctantly join together to survive the spreading apocalypse and find their families. Personal fears, long buried secrets, and their own personalities threaten to tear the group apart as they make their way across the zombie-ridden landscape in Dads vs. Zombies.

Always good for a laugh
Thoroughly enjoyed my time listening to this. Made me smile and laugh all the way to the end. Story is not something sensational, but it is fairly original in how tongue in cheek all of the humor is. In short (and in order to keep this review short and to the point), the story is as goofy and silly as Zombieland. It is also relatively clean (apart from an occasional shit), and could possibly make a good read for older kids. If you want something hardcore and serious, look elsewhere. If you want something crude, rude, sensual, and gory, don't touch this with a 39 and half foot pole. If you want to relax and build some smile creases, then this is a good listen for you. Benjamin Wallace has yet to disappointment me.

Absolutely Hillarious!
I really like the zombie apocalypse subgenre. I read the spectrum of them from the very serious to the spoofs and from the science-based virus-style infection to the supernatural cause. So it is with some authority that I state that this was one of the best zombie apocalypse novels I have ever read. It has a solid plot that would fit in nicely with any book in the genre (three men trying to reunite with their families as the world falls apart around them) but it’s the extraordinary level of humor that lifts this book to the top of the ladder.
The novel opens with our three dads (John, Chris and Erik) at the bowling alley where they have been forced to join a league by the much-hated president of their Home Owners Association. The three men don’t appear to like each other very much and it’s fairly clear that at least one of them (John) probably isn’t liked by much of anyone. The laughs start early in the chapter and continue to the end of the book. The banter between these three men is superb as Wallace draws out each man’s very distinctive character. Forced to walk home because they’ve been drinking, the zombie apocalypse comes to unlife around them and they don’t notice. By morning, the world has gone to hell and our three dads are trying to figure out how to find their families and reconnect with them.
Then the mistakes begin. In many of these novels the heroes are super smart and physically capable. They kill zombies better than Rambo. That does not describe our dads. John, especially, has an almost superhuman ability to do something stupid. And these blunders both add to the tension and create extraordinarily funny situations. Laugh out loud funny. Grab your sides funny. Rip yourself a new hernia funny. Get your eighteen-year-old son to start listening to the book with you funny. It’s that good.
It also took me in directions I didn’t expect several times. Part of this is because John continually does such comically stupid things. But many are also just good plot twists. I was sorry when the book came to an end because I just wasn’t done listening to it yet. Fortunately, I see on Audible that Dads vs. the World is coming so the humor will continue.
I received this book free from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

The only zombie story I've ever enjoyed.
It's really more about the interaction of the main characters than the zombies. You probably know people just like these guys, which only makes it more amusing. And who doesn't feel this way about their HOA? There is really no gore here, just some neighbors who don't get along trying, in the most bumbling and way possible, to survive the apocalypse together because together is better than alone.

Humorous apocalyptic adventure or.."Shut up, John"
4.5 out of 5 stars4.6 (31 ratings)
Overall 5 out of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this humorous take on the zombie apocalypse. There is no deep drama here, just three ordinary neighborhood Dads who set out to reunite with their families after the dead start to rise. Join the ride as they first try to ignore it and let the government handle (as if), then take off in various different vehicles from Mustang to Prius to boats to get past the zombies and find their families. There are plenty of twists and turns, a surprise prepper, an HMO enforcer, bowling, drinking, lawn mowering over zombies, survivalists preparing to use the attack to take over the world, and more. Through it all, the guys who hate each other, end up bonded, and you may discover the answer to the question "How dumb can John be?"
The narration was great. Loved the different voices.

A very good book
First off the narration was very good, the guy does a few voices which helps separate the characters well in my opinion but his best portrayal is of John. At first I could not stand him, he just seem to have no common sense, continuing to do stupid things but the way the book is written and executed made me feel anger towards John only for me to root for him later, he becomes part of the fabric of this world, the narrators voice captured the essence of this man, how I would expect him to sound and act. I started off hating the guy but by half way through I loved the guy. The writer made me feel something, mainly frustration and anger towards that one character but the writer also made me like that character and I could visually see this world they lived in. Fantastic book, very good. 👍
