Publisher's Summary

Although Jodie is only eight years old, she is violent, aggressive, and has already been through numerous foster families. Her last hope is Cathy Glass.

From the Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author.

At the Social Services office, Cathy (an experienced foster carer) is pressured into taking Jodie as a new placement. Jodie's challenging behaviour has seen off five carers in four months. Despite her reservations, Cathy decides to take on Jodie to protect her from being placed in an institution.

Jodie arrives, and her first act is to soil herself, and then wipe it on her face, grinning wickedly. Jodie meets Cathy's teenage children, and greets them with a sharp kick to the shins. That night, Cathy finds Jodie covered in blood, having cut her own wrist, and smeared the blood over her face.

As Jodie begins to trust Cathy her behaviour improves. Over time, with childish honesty, she reveals details of her abuse at the hands of her parents and others. It becomes clear that Jodie's parents were involved in a sickening paedophile ring, with neighbours and Social Services not seeing what should have been obvious signs.

Unfortunately Jodie becomes increasingly withdrawn, and it's clear she needs psychiatric therapy. Cathy urges the Social Services to provide funding, but instead they decide to take Jodie away from her, and place her in a residential unit.

Although the paedophile ring is investigated and brought to justice, Jodie's future is still up in the air. Cathy promises that she will stand by her no matter what - her love for the abandoned Jodie is unbreakable.

Fabulously written but not for the faint of heart

Coming from someone that works with children with severe trauma, this story touched my heart in so many ways. It was truly a wonderful story about the pain, exhaustion and endless challenges a foster parent faces. The guy wrenching story is sadly one other children face but needs to be heard. It became one of my favorite books almost instantly.

this is a terrible and horrible true story told with a lot of empathy and love. thank you to all foster carers who do their job well and care for the forgotten and unwanted children.

Read, listen

Once again I was formed to stop listening so I could do my daily routine. I would have just prefered just listening to my book.

JAW DROPPING

Seriously, this book was jaw-dropping. I guess I am naïve because I could’ve never imagined in my worst nightmares the things this child has went through. I know children are abused every day, but to this extent is unfathomable. I hope in someway it was meant to be for me, and others, to read this book ( because it’s not something I would normally read because I’m very empathetic and I knew I would cry ), so maybe it would help us recognize the signs and not Ignore our gut feelings and turn away. This foster mother deserves praises!

This is HEARTWRENTCHING!

I both loved and hated this TRUE STORY of Jodie. I cried so much, and it was so hard to listen to. But I had to know what happened to this baby girl 🌹 Cathy Glass, did a wonderful job of this most important, and touching story-in every aspect! I’m sure she shed tears, while doing the research, and writing it so very well. I won’t ever forget Cathy or Jodie. I also won’t ever listen to this book again. It’s etched into my heart forever! Highly recommend this to all Social workers, and anyone who is involved in child care. I wish there was a follow up book. ❤️

Heart wrenching story

Was a good story but so sad that someone endured this kind of treatment from their own parents and that social services was so remiss in taking action.

Touching

this was my first ever audio book as since getting depression I struggle to concentrate reading.
I will be starting another one straight away by Cathy Glass.
This was beautifully written and beautifully read. I hope all the other readers I listen to in the future are as good as Denika.

TRULY HEARTBREAKING

Jodie’s young life is absolutely heartbreaking the horrendous way she has been treated by her parents (if you can call them that) and others. At 8 year old this wee girl knows words and things no child should ever know or heard. Thank God for Cathy who tells this, in my opinion, the saddest and most disturbing story ever. More disturbing because it is true. The way Cathy handles and cares for Jodie is amazing she is truly an angel and Adrian, Lucy and Paula really make this a fantastic family. Thank you Cathy for another wonderful book. I can’t wait for your new ones.

Cathy Glass is such a strong woman

This is by far the most harrowing story from Cathy, I have listened to about 10 of Cathy books, but this is by far the most upsetting.
Well done Cathy, you are so strong.

Heartbreaking!

I couldn’t stop listening. Sad, very sad life story of poor little child who endured so much pain by very people who should’ve protected her. Cathy Glass is loving, caring and very patient foster career who showed love to this poor girl for the first time! I enjoyed listening to Denica Fairman, very well narrated and such a pleasant voice to listen too. Thank you for sharing your story Cathy, what an eye opener.

Indescribable!

It is difficult to articulate the sadness I felt for Jodie, as well as the strength showed by Cathy and her three amazing children! No to mention the anger at social services and the apathy of Jodie’s social worker! The depravity of some people is incomprehensible! Big love to Jodie, Cathy, Adrian, Lucy and Paula 🤗
