A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Good listen
Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?
Yes, but I am a fan of A X L Pendergast.
If you’ve listened to books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child before, how does this one compare?
A good listen, not the best, but not bad. Relic was my favourite.
Have you listened to any of Rene Auberjonois’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Always consistently good.
Could you see Dance of Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, Relic would be good though.

good for the abridged version
I was surprised that the story did not suffer to much being abridged. It's not as good as other Pendacast stories as its missing the more super natural accepts of other stories but its still very good.

Politics
Enjoying the Pendergast series. I am disappointed after reading a review on a later book regarding the inclusion of the author’s political interpretation of a party he is not affiliated. I read for escape and do not appreciate the perpetuation of hate and division that it fuels.

Another Pendergast
Ticked me off that I had to opt for the abridged version to enjoy Rene Auberjonois' wonderful portrayal of Pendergast. Just couldn't handle Scott Brick's. For a reason that escapes me, so many listeners think Brick has hung the moon. Sure, he's a good reader, but he pales in comparison to Mr. Auberjonois. In addition, I just completed all the Pendergast stories by going back to listen to Reliquary read by Dick Hill, who's a fine reader but utterly ill-equipped to portray Pendergast. Despite Mr. Hill's talent, he was colossally miscast. Perhaps, it was because Reliquary was among the first Pendergast entries and a suitable reader had yet to be discovered. Neither Hill, nor Brick have the chops to render the southern gentlemanly flair of Pendergast. That said, Jefferson Mays delivered an excellent portrayal for Crooked River.

Not the best Pendergast
Quite disappointed by this scenario. It was rather shallow and lacked the kind of mystery and intrigue found in the other novels. There was no emphasis whatsoever on the ambiance and atmosphere which Preston and Child are usually so good at describing. Also, Pendergast looses his charm when things get... too personal.

Abridged! New reader! Why oh why?
Big question: why an abridged version only and why a change of reader?
I am a big fan of the adventures of Agent Penderghast and have enjoyed the previous audio versions, all unabridged and read by the same narrator. Until now. why?
I'm not sure if the story was just ordinary or if it was let down by the fact it is an abridged version with loads of detail missing. I'm not sure if this was the reason it took longer to listen to than it did the others even though they are 10 hours longer. Was it because it seemed rushed? Was it because the reader was, well, boring?
Also, having the great John Lee introduce the book, only illustrated what we were missing.
I had to listen to this to continue the series but it was a chore, an anomaly in the series which usually is excellent entertainment. Hopefully the rest with revert back to the way it started.

an amazing story however being abridged spoilt it
why oh why was this abridged? I have all the series and whilst working through the unabridged versions very happily, I suddenly found a book missing.. this one. I searched and found it but it is abridged and with aa different narrator! After recording the rest so well I'm at a loss why omit this book?
it was enjoyable and you need it to keep the flow of the series but it felt disjointed and omitted so much. This book is needed to discover who saved our hero and to link the reaaon why he's on prison in the next book.
Please record this again and make it unabridged

An unabridged shame.
A fantastic introduction to another member of the Penderghast family.
Solidly plotted and mysterious.
However, the required level of menace and atmosphere is missing due to the fast clip that the book moves at.
This is obviously one of the issues with an unabridged book - we get the plot and story but lose the slowburn.
The abridging is fantastically done - bar for the atmosphere it's difficult to know what has been removed.
Recommended, but keep in mind the above points.
Looking forward to the next!
