Publisher's Summary
The thrilling first audiobook in the best-selling DI Kelly Porter series.
After a scandal forces DI Kelly Porter out of the Met, she returns home to the Lake District. Crimes in the Cumbrian constabulary tend to be minor, but Kelly begins work on a cold case that shocked the local community - the abduction and brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl.
Meanwhile, Kelly is also investigating two seemingly straightforward crimes: a case involving an illegal immigrant and a robbery following the death of a local businessman. But evidence comes to light that reveals a web of criminal activity beyond anything Kelly imagined. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dark and dangerous underworld.
As Kelly threatens to expose those with much to lose, she risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth....

Good read. Ignore the bad reviews.
I almost didn't buy this due to all the 1 star reviews and the "too gorey" comments.
Good grief.
Ignore those.
Those people apparently are ultra sensitive and don't read a lot of mystery/police procedural type books, UK based or elsewhere.
Rachel Lynch does a great job crafting a story. DI Kelly Porter is a well developed character, and it is certainly worth picking up this book.
If you like authors like Angela Marsons, Robert Bryndza, or the crime drama "Vera" you will like this book.
Nothing in this book is anywhere near what the ultra-sensitive reviews would lead you to believe.
Just buy it.

Wow, was this bad....
I should have paid attention to the reviews that said this was an overly violent book but one of the reviewers said, "Don't pay attention to that, this book isn't any worse than any other police procedural, just get it". And so I did, because I have read some really gruesome police procedurals in the past and that part didn't bother me because I was connected to the protagonist or I liked their teams and was rooting for them or whatever.
Whelp, I have met my violence line in this book. There were several times I actually felt queasy and most of the really violent stuff was just plain gratuitous. "Spoiler Alert" The worst part was that the violence was on so many levels. Cruelty to animals, cruelty to both men and women, sexual and physical assault, horrifying murders, and the list goes on.
There were other reasons to really not like this book. There is absolutely no mystery here except how long it took the police to unravel what was going on. In such a small town it should have been obvious. The author introduces us the baddies right off and then proceeds to spend two thirds of the book telling us all about how bad they are. There is also no real character building of the protagonist and her team. I could not tell you the name of any of the DC's or DS's and half the time when the scene included the main character I didn't even realize it was her right away.
The narrator did a pretty good job and I would probably like her very much in another series.
If your looking for a DI Kim Stone or DI Nikki Galena experience, this is not it! Don't waste your credit on this book.

An epic beginning to a new British series...
I prefer British detective audiobooks. Narrator and author work together to make this suspenseful murder mystery a winner. Plot and subplots move at a perfect pace, character development ideal. Read the summary. Just know that I am happy that I found this hidden gem. Getting next book in series immediately. Highly recommended. Well worth a treasured credit.

It gets better...
I had a difficult time getting through the first part of this book. I wasn’t crazy about the main character but the biggest problem for me was the brutality of the story. If you are particularly sensitive to the issues of rape, human trafficking and animal abuse, this book might not be for you. I will say though that I stuck it out and there story seemed to get better and less disturbing somehow. I ended up rather liking it!

Truly Enjoyed
This is my favorite genre, especially British DI series. Rachel Lynch is a new author to me and look forward to “reading” next installment. Agree with some reviewers that you had to pay attention to keep characters straight in beginning, but disagree with reviewers who are horrified with graphic violence. Of course any violence totally unacceptable and hard to listen to, but sadly, it’s part of the fabric in underbelly of our societies. I felt this author’s depiction of violence was not gratuitous, and contributed to story and character development. Clare Kissane a new narrator to me and also excellent. Highly Recommend🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Extremely enjoyable .. spot on
I really enjoyed this book, so much so I'll be continuing with the series. I was hesitant when reviews mentioned animal abuse .. without ruining the story it relates to dog fighting and yes, when i got to that bit i forwarded 40sec but aside from that the writing was clear and concise, perfect flow & the characters & story so interesting. The story, which revolves around trafficking unsuspecting females into the UK sex trade should be read by any woman contemplating being an illegal immigrant. I thoroughly enjoy the story, didn't feel it was too grafic and the narration was great.

Intense crime thriller
I’m used to Connelly, Peter Robinson and Peter Grainger, this title by Rachel Lynch was, by far, more suspenseful and graphic than any of them. I’m still not sure how I feel about that. While the other author’s books are about crime, they don’t delve as deeply into the actions of the killers. In Dark Game, however, several vulnerable people are killed - one while being raped - and the visceral details are provided. Sure, Lynch could have gone into even more detail but mercifully, doesn’t. Still, I found myself anxious over the events as I listened on the way to and from work. That’s not to say it was necessarily bad, but it was a bit of a shock.
That out of the way, the story is fairly good, though the way everything tied together was a bit unbelievable. Our main character, DI Porter, is new to her post in the Lake District, (what is it about that place that causes so many British authors to set their stories there?) and the way she arranged her team and got results was somewhat rushed. Certain events seem to happen for no reason and there’s often mention of someone who you don’t really remember who they are. Still, I looked forward to each listening and will probably check out Lynch’s other works.
The narration was well done. Aside from the narrator attempting a couple male voices with a laughable gruffness, i felt the characters were well expressed.

I felt this book had the potential to be Brilliant, enthralling and even film material.
However the cruelty and violence towards humans and animals was so gratuitous it was nauseating. I was forever skipping chapters which spoilt the book for me.
Author please note, you can imply violence, leaving it up to the reader to imagine, rather than rub our noses in it!
For me a true shame. Great Narrator though!

Off to a great start
This is the first story in this series, and it’s excellent. Believable characters; plausible, complicated story; excellent narration; 5 more stories in the series at time of writing. Happy days. As another reviewer remarked it’s so refreshing for the main character to be fairly ordinary, really good at her job, with no obvious major personality flaws. Already downloaded No2 with great anticipation. Highly recommended.

Basic detective story
Tough but caring female detective retutns to her rural home police force after working for The Met. Within weeks she has won the respect of her colleagues and singlehandedly solved a cold case and smashed open a web of organised crime. It's not badly written and there's a fair bit going on but it all just lacked subtlety and became a bit too ridiculous and unbelievable as it went on.

Oh dear...
Poorly written and in desperate need to editing, and with a narration that could have saved this book - but didn’t. I’m such a loyal Audible user that I persevered while rolling my eyes.
That’ll teach me for luxuriating in the works of Hilary Mantel and jumping onto a work like this.
But I must say: as much as I really worked to stick with this bland effort... I’m still grateful for the diversity of Audible’s offering.
And no I don’t work for Audible! I just love ’em!

Hard going-Couldn’t see it through
Half way through this book I was feeling so anxious and unsettled about the violence and depravity that was being described and seemed to just keep getting worse, I took the decision to stop reading. It wasn’t worth it.

not what I expected
a good story fast paced at times but should come with a warning about graffic nature of murder descriptions
