Story
Ty has always known that the ocean is a dangerous place. Every time he swims beyond the borders of his family's subsea farm, he's prepared to face all manner of aquatic predators-sharks, squid, killer whales. What Ty isn't prepared to find in the deep is an entire township chained to a sunken submarine, its inhabitants condemned to an icy underwater grave. It's only the first clue to a mystery that has claimed hundreds of lives and stands to claim two more....

Story
Jacqueline Woodson's first middle-grade novel since National Book Award winner Brown Girl Dreaming celebrates the healing that can occur when a group of students share their stories. It all starts when six kids have to meet for a weekly chat - by themselves, with no adults to listen in. There, in the room they soon dub the ARTT Room (short for "A Room to Talk"), they discover it's safe to talk about what's bothering them - everything from Esteban's father's deportation and Haley's father's incarceration to Amari's fears of racial profiling and Ashton's adjustment to his changing family fortunes.

In the virtual reality game Heir Apparent, there are way too many ways to get killed, and Giannine seems to be finding them all. Which is a darn shame, because unless she can get the magic ring, locate the stolen treasure, answer the dwarf's dumb riddles, impress the head-chopping statue, charm the army of ghosts, fend off the barbarians, and defeat the man-eating dragon, she'll never win. And she has to, because losing means she'll die, for real this time.

Story
An astonishing civil rights story from Newbery Honor winner and National Book Award finalist Steve Sheinkin. On July 17, 1944, a massive explosion rocked the segregated Navy base at Port Chicago, California, killing more than 300 sailors who were at the docks, critically injuring off-duty men in their bunks, and shattering windows up to a mile away. On August 9th, 244 men refused to go back to work until unsafe and unfair conditions at the docks were addressed. When the dust settled, fifty were charged with mutiny, facing decades in jail and even execution.

In middle school, words aren't just words. They can be weapons. They can be gifts. The right words can win you friends or make you enemies. They can come back to haunt you. Sometimes they can change things forever. When cell phones are banned at Branton Middle School, Frost and his friends Deedee, Wolf, and Bench come up with a new way to communicate: leaving sticky notes for each other all around the school. It catches on, and soon all the kids in school are leaving notes - though for every kind and friendly one, there is a cutting and cruel one as well.

Publisher's Summary
The ocean rose, swallowing up the lowlands. Earthquakes shattered the continents, toppling entire regions into the rising water. Now, humans live packed into stack cities. The only ones with any space of their own are those who live on the ocean floor, the Dark Life. Ty has spent his whole life living deep undersea, helping his family farm the ocean floor. But when outlaws attack his homestead, Ty finds himself in a fight to save the only home he has ever known.
Joined by Gemma, a girl from the Topside who has come subsea to look for her brother, Ty ventures into the frontier’s rough underworld and discovers some dark secrets to Dark Life...secrets that threaten to destroy everything.
In Dark Life, Kat Falls has created a breathtaking world where the deep can be dangerous, the darkness can be deadly, and sometimes it takes extraordinary power to survive.

Great Family Read!
I listened to Dark Life with my kids--21, 18, 15 on a car trip. We were captivated! Ms. Falls creates a believable undersea world in a future where global warming has greatly reduced the livable land on Earth. Her characters are bright, witty and adventurous and we thoroughly enjoyed our peek into their lives. Look for the sequel, Riptide, also a great read! Narrator Keith Nobbs voice the parts perfectly. Dark Life has been optioned for a movie, and author Kat Falls plans five books total in this engaging series. Highly recommended!

No more "How much longer" only "press play"
Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Life to be better than the print version?
We had 2 round trips car tripsin 3 weekend span (about 30 hrs worth), and my son needed to get in his reading time in and he can not read in a car. I got this intending to load it on his iPod and get an another book for hubby and Myself. My husband and I read the reviews and decided to listen as a family. We all thoroughly enjoyed it! (Ages 43,42,12,9).
What about Keith Nobbs’s performance did you like?
The story and narration where so good my 9 year old said he felt like he was watching a movie because he could see everything so clearly in his mind.
Any additional comments?
We got Riptide for the second leg. Everyone was so looking forward to it and it did not disappoint.

Under the sea; VERY entertaining.
I'm just a fool for under water colonies and I don't know why it is not done much more often in sci fi... [I love V.McIntyre's 'Superluminal' ; see also 'A door into ocean'] This story seems so logical, but I did not find it at all predictable. I found a unique world, a beautiful world, full of interesting characters, with a likable main character. Very, enjoyable and entertaining. I'm just starting the next in the series 'Rip Tide', and hope the next one will be available soon.

Wonderful Story for All Ages
I read this book when I was ten years old, and decided to come back to it now that I am an adult. The plot definitely still holds up. Usually books meant for younger audiences make me turn my nose because the writing is juvenile, or dodges around darker subjects. This book however, does not do that. I must say that the narrator is a bit difficult to get used to as he anunciates every word quite clearly, but once you get into it he does a very good performance.
