Publisher's Summary

From the shadows, I shall rise, the Dark Lord of a shattered land and a broken people.

My name is Robert Grailmont. Since I was young, I felt called to serve my fellow citizens, rising through the political ranks with a senator’s seat in my near future. But when I tried to reveal the scandal of the century, I found myself framed by the very people I was trying to expose.

I thought I’d hit rock bottom, never to get back up, but then I heard a call from another world.

"Dark Lord, we need you!"

Now I find myself the king of a ruined kingdom, its people enslaved and its territory occupied by a corrupt empire. It’ll take all my wits, skills, and guile, along with the aid of my ascendant queens, to save Duskhaven and to restore what was lost.

Exaggerated and Dramatic

I was hoping for a dark lord story. Something that you could get into and get progression. It’s very dramatized though. Really trying to show how deep the emotions are a lot of the time. A lot of the explanations and interactions were 3-4 times as long as they needed to be and I don’t understand why. The “dark lord” also has a massive chip on his shoulder that always has him trying to show how understanding and down to earth he is. He’ll occasionally be firm and even that’s treated a bit dramatically. Most of the book so far isn’t about the story just stuff around it.

I came back and dropped a star. Hours in and all he's done is banged a girl he just met and fell for. He's done that and putting on a crown, that's it. The only "obstacles" so far are him not being liked by his people. That is literally all that has happened HOURS into the book. The actual set up for the story took like 30 mins? Which is fine, but then NOTHING for HOURS.

5 stars across the board.

This is my first book by Thorne. I’m definitely reading more work by this author.
Great start to a new series. Can’t wait for the next book.

Great starting point

So, I wasn't so sure about this book at first. I thought the beginning was just meh at best. I kept going and stayed with it anyway (I've learned not to give up on books too early) and was rewarded several chapters later. The author then puts it all together to give us a plot worth listening to. I actually went back to my "meh" beginning to make sure I had the story correct. After that the book really starts to move at a nice pace, not too rushed and not to slow. Let's call it Goldilocks pacing cause it's just right.

I enjoyed the book and it's a worthy listen. Now we just have to see where book 2 takes us.

Good listen

This is an interesting story with a decent build up and great pacing. The start of the story is the build up phase with the pacing reaching a sweet spot after the first few chapters. This doesn’t take away from the book but some people want non stop running from the start. This book tells a great and interesting story and the narrator does a fantastic job.

A great story with fun and interesting characters.

M.E. Thorne writes a great story overall. Well written characters that are different and fun and the plot moves on at a good pace once it gets going. I look forward to the next book from M.E. Thorne. Audio Version: Renée Nolen does a wonderful job with the story and characters.

A real surprise

This was a book I didn't have much hope for. You know one of those you'd pass over. But I was glad I gave it a go. The story turned out better than I thought it would. It was well written and flowed well.
I have never heard anything from Renee but I was pleasantly surprised and I recommend her. She did a fantastic job in bringing the characters to life.
As what I would say as being a sleeper, this turned out really well.
