Publisher's Summary

The peaceful Eldarin were the last of three ancient races. The mystical Oltor, healers and poets, had fallen before the dread power of the cruel and sadistic Daroth. Yet in one awesome night, the invincible Daroth had vanished from the face of the earth. Gone were their cities, their armies, their terror. The Great Northern Desert was their only legacy. Not a trace remained for a thousand years....

The War of the Pearl had raged for seven years, and the armies of the four Duchies were exhausted and weary of bloodshed. But the foremost of the Dukes, Sirano of Romark, possessed the Eldarin Pearl and was determined to unravel its secrets.

Then, on one unforgettable day, a dark moon rose above the Great Northern Desert, and a black tidal wave swept across the land. In moments the desert had vanished beneath lush fields and forests, and a great city could be seen glittering in the morning sunlight. From this city reemerged the blood-hungry Daroth, powerful and immortal, immune to spear and sword. They had only one desire: to rid the world of humankind forever. Now the fate of the human race rests on the talents of three heroes: Karis, warrior woman and strategist; Tarantio, the deadliest swordsman of the age; and Duvodas the Healer, who will learn a terrible truth.

Read by Homer Todiwala.

Good story, not so good narration

The story is a fine one by the late great David Gemmell. The narration, sadly, is subpar and makes it a real chore to listen to. I'm on the fence about returning the book because of it, but might struggle on. Almost all other Gemmell books, which have finally become available in the last year or so have mostly excellent narration (except for the Sigarni Hawk Queen and Rigante series). I don't know, if the money ran out for professional readers or what made them change their selection, but it's really sad. Gemmell's stories deserved better than this.

I'm a HUGE David Gemmel fan.

The story here is great, but the narration is terrible. It sounds like Homer had to rerecord every sentence individually and then patch them back together. the pauses and tonal inflections are all off and tend to send confusing. Stay away from this narrator, not the author. I struggled through it, but my fandom is greater than the narrator's failures. It will not be so for many.

AMAZING story....worst narration ever

Another Gemmell gem….but holy hell did the narrator do his best to try and ruin it. Pretty much every paragraph of the book has an error in it. Scarred and Scared and different words believe it or not, with different meanings. Prescience is not pronounce pre-science. Sentences were read all jerks with emphasis in weird places and…my favorite….he let out a huge burp in the middle of a character voice that was not indicated in the script ….and just left it there. I’m amazed that this version of the narration even went to publication. They must have been in a rush. If you can get through it though…..Gemmell is amazing.

Choppy,over enouncig narrator

Narration!!! There are looooong pauses between sentences you could drive a truck through. Words mispronounced. Voices that do not fit characters which get reused for other characters confusing the listener. Over enouncing narrator (kinda reminds me of overacting actors).

Loved it

I loved it and didn't want it to end. I fell in love with the characters every last one of them. I will listen to it again.

Amazing work, not so good narrator

I am a huge D. Gemmell fan. I appreciate the narrator and the work he put into this project, but he was not right for this book. Most of his character voices grate across the ear, especially the Daroth. I am sure there are many works this narrator would be perfect for, but this was not one of them.

Some good some awful voices/reading

The Daces voice is awful, old people, other main characters have the same annoying character voice. Other minor characters sounded great. Quite a lot of miss reading too. See legend for a good audio book.

The narrator belched

how can someone so obviously talented do such a half arsed job . the narrator burps at one point, and makes so many mistakes during reading the book it makes you wonder if English is his first language.

don't get me wrong quite a good narration in some ways but at times he obviously wasn't reading a story he was just reading a shopping list .

weird

Great Story

This is another great story but spoiled by the delivery and mispronounced words and inconsistent use of the name of one of the lead characters

What a shame.

I really enjoyed this book when I read it a long time ago. Therefore I was excited to see that it had a brand new audiobook version. I've managed 4 hours but I cannot suffer it any longer. The narration is quite honestly terrible. There is absolutely zero emotion, "evil" characters are given stereotypical goblin-esque voices which create about as much malice and intent as a rock. Inflections and tone never match the scene. Timing and pacing is poor. It's just bad.

Avoid this one and just re-read the book. That is what I'm going to do.

Good story ruined by poor narration

Poor choice of narrator really lets this story down. The most annoying factor was that the narrator gives one of the main protagonists what I can only describe as a goblin voice. I read the novel over 20 years ago and it certainly wasn't the voice I'd imagined for the character. Other voices also like characatures. I feel the narrator's style would be best suited to comedic rather than heroic fantasy. In addition, the narrator doesn't appear to have read the book before reading it aloud for the narration and you end up with situations were the tone of voice he chooses is belied by the writing, e.g. when Karis said something that the narrator read as angry, followed by the words "she said, surprised at the lack of anger in her voice" This happens more than once; and as one of the previous reviewers mention, the narrator actually belches at one point! Overall, good story, but disappointing voice acting.

great story, but not a great narration

it's a good book I've read many times so was pleased to have it read to me while I potter around the house on lockdown. but the guy reading the story brings almost no life to it and it made it very hard to enjoy. I'll read the book again next time I want to enjoy the story.

ps don't let that put you off gemmel books as a lot of them are amazing and narrated really well, just not this one unfortunately.

Appalling narration

Love the book as I love just about all David Gemmells work, but what idiot decided that Homer Todiwala would be a good narrator for this or any of Gemmells books. Did they actually get him to try out first or just gave him the job? His first language is obviously not English, mispronunciations, a really annoying nasal voice for many characters. He really butchers this story. Stick to reading this book it's far better. This is something that I've unfortunately found with Gemmells publishers/ family, whoever decides on the narrator. So many awsome books but read by too many different narrators some of mediocre talent. Very disappointed in them.

worst narration I have ever heard.

This is a great story, spoiled by the worst narration I have ever heard. Some of the pronunciations were dreadful. There
should be some form of quality control, but seems to be missing.

Disappointing.

After reading the book a while ago, I purchased on Audible but was disappointed with the narration. The voices didn’t match the characters, especially Dace, the alter ego psychopath. Felt like I was wading through just to get it finished at times. I’ll stick to my old paperback copy of this one!!

Great story, terrible narration.

I wish I read the reviews on this one before purchase, it’s a great story, but the narrator does a terrible job of telling the story, he seems to have found a way to make every character sound like the snake from jungle book, or an ent for lord of the rings, I couldn’t finish listening to it in the end as I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated with him.

Dreadful narrator

I love Gemmell's books, but the narrator was extremely poor. His mis-pronunciation of so many common English words makes you think that his vocbulary must be sorely lacking. He reads some sentences with the intonation as though the sentence has finished, then he realises the sentence is continuing so he just adds the words on the end. The worst narrator I've ever heard.

great book but horrible naration

Todiwala narrated this like a man who was reading a financial report . He did well with actual characters dialog but read the background as if He did not seem to know what punctuation is. I almost gave up after 2nd chapter. Did well with character conversation and thoughts only. The book itself, story and characters deserved better!

David Gemmell, need I say more.

As always Gemmell provides a great story very out of the ordinary for him. As well as having an honest to god functional Bard as a character with magic n all.
Though the story is great the quality of the book has been my worst experience with Audible so far. 3x so far in chapter 12 has the audio just kind of phased in mid sentence due to poor editing. The narrator is good enough but not the best I have heard has a strange habit of changing voices for the same character.

A good story

I was unsure about the narrators performance to start with but I got used to it. It isn’t how I read the book in my head at all.

I really like the character Tarantio and the Daroth are formidable villians.

Not his Best Work

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No - Mainly due to the narrator, he is just awful for this sort of novel and genre, unfortunately completely destroyed my immersion

Would you recommend Dark Moon to your friends? Why or why not?

No - Mainly due to the narrator, he is just awful for this sort of novel and genre, unfortunately completely destroyed my immersion. The story starts our great, one of my favourite characters is the main antagonist so I was determined to stick to it but the story loses steam about the mid way through and becomes a bit of a chore to finish. It just slows down significantly with several small subplots forming which feel a bit more like filler then substance and take away from the most exciting part of the story which is the main antagonist. it is enjoyable but not his best work by far. As a huge Gemmell fan who has read all of his books multiple times, i would say this is one of his more weaker novels, even if the concepts are great.

What didn’t you like about Homer Todiwala’s performance?

the narrator just does not have the range of tones for the role and his choice of voices and tones just does not work for the feel of the story IMOP. i found the tone distracting at best, although i did just finish listening to Morningstar by Gemmell and that reader was AMAZINGLY GOOD.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

YES

Any additional comments?

If you love the drenai series then i recommend you read the book and skip the audible version personally, i enjoyed reading it much more than i have listening to it.
