Story
The apocalypse has ended for Adrian Ring, and the rebuilding of the world has begun. But have all the stories of the old world's death been told? Elsewhere on Earth, there's a plane filled with innocents, and a criminal could wipe it from the skies with a tide of undeath. A young man in Manhattan is going mad with hunger and fear. A veterinarian races to save her animal patients and their owners one by one. A drunk lunatic is driven to self-destruction, craving the undead horde and the absolution they will give him.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

It's been three long years since Deadbreak. That's what everyone's calling it - the day the dead rose. Every day since then, Jeremiah Reid has had one goal: to make his way back to his daughter. With his four-legged companion, Joe, Jeremiah has to travel a lawless wasteland teeming with zombies, bandits, and worse, like people who put anchovies on pizza (you know who you are). It's a new world out there, and no one is safe. People are weary, cities are in ruin, supplies are scarce, and brains are on the menu.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
For the first time, the Internet phenomenon is now in print! Beheading a zombie isn't easy in a world where you're more afraid of the living than the dead. Adrian Ring's simple life is thrown into chaos when the world is ripped apart by a plague of undead and legions of desperate survivors. Retreating to Auburn Lake Preparatory Academy, Adrian attempts to rescue friends and family on the way while dancing around his impending insanity over who and what he left behind, and evading maniac survivors. He saves his cat Otis, but shoots his mom. Pretty successful, all things considered.
Dark Recollections is the first part of Adrian's own story of how he survived after "That Day". Told through his eyes as he talks to his laptop, affectionately named 'Mr. Journal", and through short stories that entwine with his tales that bring forth dark visions of a world being eaten alive by an unimaginable evil. Adrian's Undead Diary is an eight-part epic about a solitary, guilt-stricken man who didn't think he deserved to live, but realized very soon that he survived and suffered for a reason. Dark Recollections is the first book in the AUD series. It covers Adrian's journal entries from September 21st 2010, to December 1st, 2010. Intermingled with his personal diary entries, book one also contains the short stories "Phil's Story", "McGreevy's Report", and "Soccer Mom".
Featured Article: 20 Best Zombie Audiobooks to Satisfy Your Cravings
The rise of the living dead may be one of the most frequently explored apocalypse scenarios by modern authors, and with good reason. A great zombie audiobook combines visceral action, the distress of watching the dead rise, and the inexorability of the human will to survive. There are almost as many titles on the subject as there are zombies in each work, so it can be difficult to know where to start. You’ll find every kind of zombie scenario here.

Very Different
What made the experience of listening to Dark Recollections the most enjoyable?
How detailed the author was about the zombie apocalyptic world. From going to the grocery store to saving the college kids. It was different than other books I had listened to. It was mostly a reading of Adrian Ring's diary of life after the zombie's started to pop up all over town. How he helped save different people and save himself. I thought it was great he even was planning on what to do if survivors started showing up. I thought the description of how crazy people had gone when the world went crazy was right about what I would expect to happen. I would listen to this book again. I'm planning on listening to book 2 now. I had looked and noticed that the author has written about 8 in his series so far.
What about James Foster’s performance did you like?
Great voice for the main character. He was a perfect fit. I could really imagine a big tough guy taking care of business and trying to get by in the crazy zombie world.

Zombie Fallout meets The Syand
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, yes, yes. Zombie fans, paranormal fans, horror fans, there is so much to this series for everyone. As I write this review I have just completed all available to the 8th book. I was so involved in story I didn't want to stop listening. Absolutely no question how to spend my credits until I had them all. (This is written for all of them)
Who was your favorite character and why?
The hero, Adrian, realizes that the world is turning upside down and that zombies are becoming a real threat. Adrian, in his efforts to prepare and find shelter neglects to attempt to retrieve his girlfriend, Cassie. That decision was not a conscious one but through a series of events he did not go to her. This weighs heavy on his heart and the guilt of that situation makes him protective and driven to find and help others.
He begins writing his thoughts, plans and interaction with others in a diary he calls, " Mr. Journal".
Which scene was your favorite?
Any with Otis the cat.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This is witty, raw and manly.
Any additional comments?
As my headline states this is Mark Tufo's Zombie Fallout with wit, action, heart and bravery meets Stepehn King's The Stand with many different characters you'll care about each one and the battle for humanity' s survival between good and evil and the spirit of each human to prove his worth.

northern exposure meets zombieland
Any additional comments?
northern exposure meets zombieland? let me start with the northern exposure part. northern exposure was one of my favorite shows b/c it was odd and quirky with a great cast of characters, one of which was john corbett. he played a philosophical ex-convict who was a disc jockey and between songs, he'd comment on all kinds of things. his comments were funny and at times very insightful. anyway, adrian reminds me of john corbett's character on northern exposure. the narrator's voice also reminds me of john corbett's voice- easy and smooth to listen to.
i don't know if you've ever seen zombieland, but it is a pretty good zombie comedy. jessie eisenberg plays a geeky guy named columbus. he's survived by making rules, such as cardio (you have to be faster than the slowest person), double tap (always make sure you shot a zombie in the head), beware of bathrooms, etc... adrian also reminded me of columbus because like columbus, he started to come up with rules as he survived certain situations.
as the story opens, adrian begins journaling because he's lonely. he starts his journal, who he calls mr. journal, in september. as he opens up, we learn that the zombie outbreak started like 3 months earlier in june. adrian is a resdence advisor at a small but elite private school. basically, he works the night shift in a dorm watching over the students.
the story swings between time frames. adrian will describe what he has been presently doing and how he got to where he is. the present entries describe his activities scavenging and securing the campus. his other entries recount the initial outbreak and the choices he made.
there are a couple of extended vignettes that are told from the perspective of people that encountered adrian during the initial outbreak. one is phil, a gun store clerk, and the other is soccer mom, a mom who encountered adrian at a grocery story. both are really good stories.
the story is kind of slow, but that's ok. this is not an action-packed run and gun shot 'em type story. the zombies are shamblers with kind of a twist- they don't moan, which if you think about it has some scary implications, but you can listen about them when you download the book!
overall, this is a funny yet at times emotionally gripping story. i'd classify the humor as dry humor, and at times, guy humor.

Loved this book!
I wasn't sure I was going to like the diary format of this book, but it totally suited the story and the narration was fantastic. This was exactly what I was looking for. I always find it interesting in books when they talk about how they figure out how to survive. Not just fighting zombies, but actual day to day living, without our Creature Comforts. Love hearing how they fortify buildings and basically scavenge for food and supplies, that kind of thing. A lot of that in this book, a lot of humor, and really just great storytelling.

Fun and sadness in the zombie apocalypse
Adrian’s world has come apart at the seams. The monster movies he has watched have finally come true.
You’ll never see a zombie flick with a sole actor because it would be hard to understand all the drama that happens with someone on their own. This book is the ramblings of such a story and it’s funny and sad and entertaining. I’d recommend for anyone that enjoys zombie apocalypse without too much horror.
The thing missing from too many zombie stories is someone that has watched the movies and actually stopped to consider what might happen. Well done.

A totally new take on the Zompoc
I Absolutely loved the audiobook version, i followed Adrian since it was a blog written in real time and i have to say, James Foster does an excellent job of giving Adrian a real, down to earth voice, that everyday guy who ends up having an important responsibility. Chris Philbrook develops the story in a way that keeps you on the edge and waiting to see what happens next. There's horror, laughs, tears, love and lies and a whole other range of emotions that any great story will make you feel. Highly recommended but i warn you. clear your calendar because you will not want to put it down until the end.

Awesome zombie series!!
I'll admit I never leave reviews, but figured after several times listening to the series I should contribute! Adrian's Undead Diary is an amazing zombie series (honestly, my favorite..& I've listened to a lot), and if you're into the genre at all I would highly recommend giving it a try. I love how the reader/listener really gets to know Adrian & bond with him through his daily journal entries - to me it is a unique way of storytelling compared to other zombie series I've listened to. It truly didn't take long at all for me to really feel invested in Adrian & his story.. He's definitely a likable character but has some guilt, & it makes some parts emotional as he talks about this. There is also some humor thrown in (sorta dry humor, but I like it!), so the series does make me both laugh & cry. The narrator James Foster does an awesome job throughout all eight books that are out so far!

this sets the standard for zombie books.
Never have a character and narrator been paired more perfectly together. I resisted this for a while because this genre has been mined pretty deep without anyone really hitting gold but this series changes that. With a likeable lead character in Adrian and his very human approach to the zombie apocalypse I powered through this series back to back and loved it.

Good, but also a little hollow.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, I'd get rid of the third-person interludes. Everything about this book says it is the journal of a man in a zombie apocalypse. So I found it a little grating having stories that vaguely connect to him, but that he has no knowledge of. Mark Tufo did the same in his zombie books - I'm guessing when he realised the limitations of a journal told story - but he did it after a book or two.
In short I'm not a fan of it as it breaks me from who is telling the tale.
If you’ve listened to books by Chris Philbrook before, how does this one compare?
No, this was the first of his I've listen too, but if it is a first work of his then it is a promising start for sure.
Have you listened to any of James Foster’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Don't think so, but I listen to a lot of books. Certainly he is a good narrator though.
Do you think Dark Recollections needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Needs one? It has a few so this is kind of pointless as a question.
Any additional comments?
The book is pretty good. I liked it for the humour and some of the scenes were very good.
What I marked it down for was this. The emotional and character connection wasn't there. This maybe due to lack of character interactions, but is also due to the book really not telling us much about the main character.
Which leads on the things we do know about him, and that a lot of them make you not like him that much. He is also massively inconsistent in behaviour. He apparently adores his girlfriend, but at the start he doesn't go to where she is likely to be, and has no good reason for this. He goes straight to his mothers house right away to save her, and then when he finds her as a zombie he shoots her with less emotion than killing a cockroach.
He randomly gives out food to a family that are hungry and saves people trapped by zombies, but then later - and right after declaring he is going to help more people and try and get more people at his location - sends a seventeen-year-old girl out unarmed into a world she has no idea what she will be facing. Might as well just shoot her in the face.
Also, some of the scenes were written for drama but not that likely. The locked classroom of kids springs to mind. If you read it, ask yourself if you can see someone with military training get caught so flat-footed, given that he had to know exactly what would happen. Heck, it is more likely he strips the weapons off the guy when he first meets him.

Just Wow!
I'm always looking for a good zombie series and this ticks all the boxes. This is written in diary style and follows Adrian's struggles with daily life in a new world, just trying to survive and all the emotions that brings with it. totally original take on the Zombie apocalypse. really looking forward to the next one!

Worthwhile!
Great zombie post apoc literature, Zombie fallout-esque style of writing and humor. Very entertaining and a must read for fans of the genre and Mark Tufo fans in particular.

Author and Narrator are a match made in heaven
This book was recommended to me for ages by friends and because I felt that zompoc genre was overloaded I kinda resisted a bit to be honest. When I eventually purchased Book 1 from the series I regretted my delay pretty much instantly. This is by far one of my favourite series in a long, long time. I bought the rest and for the first time in ages remembered what it was like to be hungry for time to listen. Sitting in my car outside work to 'finish a chapter' was a feeling I missed and it was back...boy was it back.
James Foster absolutely nails the narration. I can't imagine anyone else being anywhere near as good and actually find this adds an immersive element to the story.
This is not a zombie gorefest for the sake of shock, so if you are looking for that then look elsewhere. What this does give is an incredible story about humanity in the face of adversity. The emotional rollercoaster gives me laughter, sadness, horror (it is a zombie apocalypse) and hope as we follow Adrian on his journey and the world he lives in. The characters are wonderfully flawed, engaging and likeable (or not). The writing is incredible. You may have realised I like this series. A LOT.
Buy the darn book! And make sure you have enough credits for the rest because I guarantee you'll need them.

Hilarious, chilling, heart-wrenching...
I first read Adrian's Undead Diary when it was just an online blog in real time. It was captivating. I love the story, and yet somehow Foster's performance embodies the goofy, guilt-ridden Adrian Ring and breathes new life into what was already a masterly written story. This isn't cheesy zombie apocalypse like many in the genre with the same old tropes; this is a human story about a guy trying to survive, while trying to be a better man to atone for a sin he perceives has made him a lesser one.
Read the first story and you'll want the rest. I never get bored of it and Philbrook is a writer of immense talent who should be better known. He writes with real craft and above all else, he writes with heart. You'll want Adrian as your best mate, with his witty, self-deprecating humour and stupid big heart, and air punch when he brings the pain to those who threaten his people.
Philbrook's brilliant writing and Foster's virtuoso performance with the material create the perfect storm. Read this, and live every heart pounding day of the apocalypse with Adrian MacArthur Ring. You'll laugh, cry, wince, swear and have a whole host of other emotions. What you won't do is regret buying this book.
