Story
Crime reporter Joe Carpenter lost his wife and two daughters in the crash of Flight 353. Joe is unable to work, think, or do anything but grieve, and wait for his own death. Then Joe meets Rose, a woman who claims to be the crash’s sole survivor. But before Joe can probe further, the elusive Rose slips away and Joe is left with haunting questions: If Rose lived through the crash, is it possible his family could have survived it, too? Did the authorities conspire to hide what really happened that night? Joe’s search for the truth will shatter him - and force him to question everything he thinks he knows about life and death.

Story
Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside. That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth....

Publisher's Summary
New York Times Bestseller
Do you dare step through the red door? Spencer Grant had no idea what drew him to the bar with the red door. He thought he would just sit down, have a slow beer or two, and talk to a stranger. He couldn’t know that it would lead to a narrow escape from a bungalow targeted by a SWAT team. Or that it would leave him a wanted man.
But now Spencer is on the run from mysterious and ruthless men. He is in love with a woman he knows next to nothing about. And he is hiding from a past he can’t fully remember. On his trail is a shadowy security agency that answers to no one - including the U.S. government - and a man who considers himself a compassionate Angel of Death. But worst of all, Spencer Grant is on a collision course with inner demons he thought he’d buried years ago - inner demons that could destroy him if his enemies don’t first.

Great Story!!!
This is an older Koontz and the technology would have been from 1994; however, Koontz is very farsighted and wrote some great advanced technology in this future setting. I loved it! It had a great balance of politics, intrigue, sex and romance. The sex was intense, the romance was tender and dear. I don't know why I hadn't read/listened to this sooner, but it was great.

Eerily Relevant for 2020.
I love Dean Koontz and have read this book in paper form many times. I enjoyed listening to it just as much. The difference between reading it years ago and listening to it now is less about the performance and more about the content.
The last time I read this book, the secondary theme of fascism was just as fictional in my own life as the emotional turmoil of the main character. But now...the subversive manipulation of how our country is being controlled is far more real and much more scary than any artist’s abattoir.
This book is well written, relevant, and engaging. I will be listening to it again very soon.

People uncomfortable with imperfection, Beware.
While I loved the book and always look forward to more by Koontz, I really hated the villain. While we we are usually supposed to hate the villain, his ideals hit too close to home. I had to put the audiobook away for a few days and come back to it because it unsettled me too much. Otherwise, the book was great.

Stick with it......
Slow burner for me. Koontz goes into too much detail and turns what should be a gripping, exciting situation into a snail race.......
It does improve though. I'm glad a stick with it. The narrator is outstanding and really does bring the characters to life.

Unusual
Very descriptive. The villain is as bad as can be, Dean’s baddies are alwaays the very best of Evil. Loved the story. It seems to be wound up at the end rather quickly, which I found odd for one of Dean’s books. He seems to have left it open for a sequel? Not sure, we may find out.

Well-read tech suspense thriller
If you like Dean Koontz, you'll love this reading. The narrator makes suitable effort with the various characters' voices and reads at a perfect pace. The story feeds on some conspiracy theory paranoia and is somewhat dated in its tech-related terminology but that makes it kinda sweet in a way. Some very adult themes. Overall, enjoyable but not quite brilliant. Worth a listen.

Nauseating narration
An excellent story line.
However, the narration is truly awful in my opinion. The simpering, affected, sickening tones that the narrator uses made me feel physically sick in places.
Particularly his tones during Eve's bedroom performance. And also some of the descriptions of people, it makes him sould like a pervert.
And then to cap it all, at the end, Ron develops a perfect British accent - except that it is Australian!!

Not my favourite
As per many of the other reviews, this book is looong with meandering descriptions and deeply emotional expression which, at times, verges on tedious. The narrator is excellent which helped a lot in keeping me listening. I bit the bullet and stayed with it hoping to expect a climactic finish but my perseverance did not pay off. The story is okay and could've been told in about 16 hours less of listening time. I'm still a Koontz fan but will pay more attention to reviews next time.
