Publisher's Summary

Alexander Dumsky, or Alex Doom, was a dark wizard. At the age of 17, he was convicted of a litany of crimes so long that even the seasoned investigators, judges, and prosecutors involved in the case could only shudder.

Not a single attorney could be found to defend him in court.

But four years later, Alex was released from prison to become the professor of dark magic. They'd thrown him into the deepest hole they could find, one built for the sole purpose of holding wizards, and then they let him back out again...

Why him? Why then?

Oh, you're not surprised to hear talk of wizardry? Well, then you probably know that the Magic Lens, which was invented in 2032, let humans see and use magic again.

Or do you know?

Very Well Executed

I was really impressed with how well the author executed the backstory in this novel. To be honest, I was about to drop this novel after listening for a couple hours because you aren't immediately familiar with the MC and his thinking. I was initially left with an impression of a wanna-be badass clone of the sandman slim series. He seemed really one dimensional in his attitude towards others simply because the author wanted to pigeonhole him as a "black mage". However, throughout the rest of the story, the author slowly introduces us to the MC's backstory through flashbacks and my first impression couldn't have been more wrong. This book has a lot more depth then I initially believed. The action in the book is a little on the lighter side of this genre, which wasn't horrible, but I would love to see more fights in the future. The world building is my only real criticism. I actually loved the setting described in the first chapter but the author doesn't build on it much as the story progresses. I really wish he would flesh out the environment more. To clarify using gamer lingo, after listening to the intro chapter I was really hoping for a open-world adventure and instead it came out extremely linear. point A to point B, back to point A and then to Point C. All in all it was a fantastic story and I had no issues with the narrator.

Missing Dresden Files?

This is a great story that feels like the Dresden Files, but is a completely different story. It’s a fun listen and can’t wait for more to get translated.

My favorite book so far

First let me just say that the narrator did an incredible job in my opinion. I absolutely loved this book. The main character was extremely fun and interesting and the humor in this book was enough to actaully audibly laugh. The only issue I have is that the author hasn't released the 2nd book and I don't think we'll be getting a sequel any time soon if ever since this isn't his main series. Either way I highly recommend this book if you like magic, mystery and main characters who don't take shit lying down!

was just ok,

I felt the book spent to much time in the past and not enough in the moment. Maybe instead of spending so much time remembering his past it should have been used to build relationships.

Additionally he complained about not having sex for so long (years) but all he did was complain and runaway from opportunities. This made me dislike the MC even more then his a** hole behavior.

I did not care for the ending. Honestly I'm not sure how the final battle ended. Nor was there any esolution with his students or the professor even with an epilogue.

Only one chapter in and...

Already I feel like I've made a mistake with this purchase. The MC feels instantly unlikable for some reason, and even though I'm not even at chapter 2 yet, judging by some of the other negative reviews, I can tell this gut feeling was spot on. My gut is also telling me that the person who wrote this book can't be younger than 30. I mean, You can just tell by how they write about him smoking cigarettes that they think it's some cool and edgy trait or something but it just kinda makes the MC come off as lame. That and his "im a wise guy" attitude. Like we get it, you're a big bad asshole criminal who spent their childhood in Wizard juvie. I can tell it will only get worse from there too.

Good

I'm going to start with the good. The world building is decent and the MC backstory was well-paced. Now the bad: I just couldn't get myself to care about any of the characters. Ok so the MC had a tragic backstory, but does he really need to make everything unnecessarily harder on himself by being an AH? Even then, I would've been ok with how he is if this was a power fantasy and he could back up the jerky behavior but he's not even that strong. As for the other characters, they are rather forgettable because I can't remember any of them now to put in this review. Regardless of all of this, it's a decent read to get you through a day of monotony albeit at 1.7x speed.

This is not the wizard you’re looking for…

I used a credit on this book hoping to find a decent urban fantasy fix while I wait for the next Dresden Files. Boy was I wrong.

The MC in The Dark Wizard’s Case is a chain smoking, alcoholic, bad mouthed, black wizard named Alex Doom. The author was trying for an OP misunderstood anti-hero, but unfortunately what he ended up with was a selfish, self-loathing jerk with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Alex thinks everyone hates him because he’s a “black wizard”, but all throughout the book, he treats everyone that tries to help him, look up to him, or bond with him like trash.

If you are looking for something similar to The Dresden Files, keep on looking... This is not the wizard you’re looking for…
