Cast aside by his father at an early age, it’s up to him to make his own way and create his own honor. With just his horse, his weapons, the clothes on his back and in his pack, and the education that his family provided, he’ll have to go it alone. Amateur casters are calling up creatures they shouldn't be able to. And there's been a murder at the city's most hallowed cathedral, a message in blood on the victim's back the NYPD wants me to interpret, like yesterday.

Some people are ordained for greatness. Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by. But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down. He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance. He also wants me with a passion.

Weakest link in 16 book chain. Bad not fatally so.
James Cronin's narration gets a lot of hate in other reviews here, and thats partly deserved. In trying to give these characters life they all have their own voices, and some are better than others. The worst and most grating of all is his accent for Tanya, who is the POV character this outing not just in her dialog but in the narration is in that mindbogglingly bad voice. Its just painful. Seriously Tanya (and Arkady) need to die heroicly or they need a new narrator,
Conroe own the second half of the train wreck. The trope he uses over and over and over again is the childsih stupidity of every single person in the world who isn't one of his heroes, Nobody, not a single character... anywhere... once shows a single hint of intelligence. Its like they're saving the world of Idiocracy, and that just requires more suspension of disbelief than even a book full of vampire angels and werewolf-bears justifies.

JPC ruined it for me
James Patrick Cronin did a horrid on this book between losing the accent on some characters to not knowing how to pronounce some words. One does NOT pronounce the second "h" in hemorrhagic, and "loa" is pronounced with an"L" sound. Now, I will admit John Cronin was partly responsible for the second problem by not capitalizing "Loa" like he should have, but James should be professional enough to make sure he knows how to pronounce words properly.
The story itself was badly disjointed. It would have been better served to be a compendium and dropping the overall story arc for another time.

Solid book, but some flaws.
I love these stories, despite the constant flood of "You don't know..." or "Surely you can't be that powerful"s.
I have to agree with the complaints on the narration as well. My big one in this series is him randomly calling Okwari with an "R" sound all of a sudden, rather than the proper "L" sound that has been used in every other instance it was read throughout the series. He even has Toni sound it out at one point for crying out loud...
That all being said, I cannot wait for the next installment of the series.

The neat factor is beginning to slip with these books. Too many people with too many super duper powers. Too many people that are the dummies in power. And a plot line that is starting to plot along, not really going anywhere. Hope it changes.

a great interlude but felt there could be more
as ever a fun installment, good action and the ever present weaving of the meta plot. however, it felt like there could have been more done with Tanya as the main voice.
we got some great insight into vampires and a great bit of pathos and loss.
but the threat felt... disconnected and not that tied into things. and the book did feel like a setup to the NEXT step with a lot of loose ends.
as ever we have the humans being obtuse and oblivious... and omega seems to be edging towards well intentioned extremist.
i cant wait to see the next book as this feels a little less stabdalone than the others and very much a contributor to the broader canon.

a rare slump for Mr Cronin and Mr Conroe
I don't know what really has happened. normally I rare james patrick cronin as one of the best narrators I've heard but in this instance he seemed all over the place.
I think he needs to re-listen to his own work to remember the voices for the characters he's portraying, the inconsistency was mind boggling, also spell check and pronunciation of certain names (like okwali, not okwari as it was read, he even went through the pronunciation in one of the earliest books).
with the story, there were interesting ideas and plot points but the story didn't seem to flow or to engage you like it's predecessors could do so well.

Nearly all of this series is utterly fantastic, apart from C.A.E.C.O best to avoid if you like the series.
Not many like this have held my attention for 16 books, a publishers pack might be nice though.

Not so good
I’ve enjoyed this series but the last couple of stories have been a bit of a let down. This one - completely lost the plot, seemed all over the place and as for the accents, why did all their voices keep changing from previous stories and even within this story. Hoping it’s just a mid season blip.

Excellant addition to the saga
Interesting perspective of the adventures that gods hammer and the warlock of the century get into. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't focus more on Tanya given it was from her viewpoint but overall enjoyable.
