Publisher's Summary

Inspired by an eerie true story.

Lorraine Hicks is 14 years old when she watches her best friend, Beverly, climb into a tree in the forest and never come back down. It’s a mystery that haunts her small town and embeds itself in Lorraine's life.

Fifteen years later, Lori is a grown woman, doing her best to move on from her troubled childhood. She reluctantly agrees to a night of camping, despite her secret terror of the woods. As she sits by a roaring bonfire, a man stands and tells the story of two 14-year-old friends who walked into the Manistee National Forest - only one of them walked back out.

The story is hauntingly similar to Lori’s own, and she embarks on a quest to discover if the two disappearances are linked.

As she unravels the truth behind the vanishings, she unearths a malevolence that forces her to question if evil truly exists.

Don’t miss this chilling paranormal murder mystery.

This. Is. Not. Scary.

I understand fear is subjective; what scares one person may not scare another. However, anyone who found this book “scary”, or said “don’t read at night!!!” should stick with Goosebumps.
If you are looking for a story that fills you with dread, messes with your mind and makes you question the relative safety of your day to day existence, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a YA murder mystery without the above than you may like this book.

I wish someone would have wrote this for me before spending a precious credit…

What a creepy story that would make a good movie

Two girls go into the woods and only one comes out. This happened to Lori and it haunts her for years. Her best friend went into the woods with her and was never seen again. Lori researches historical files and finds this has been happening every 5 years. Combine the creepy woods with a creepy guy in the neighborhood and you don't know who or what is making the girls disappear.

This was based on a true story of a skeleton found in a tree. Interesting story, some good characters and well written. It makes you want to get to the end to find out why the girls have gone missing and what happened to them.

Excellent Writing

The writing itself was fantastic. I’m a stickler for poorly written dialogue and this author does a very good job portraying realistic characters. The first half of the story was very gripping, the characters were compelling, and I was a little disappointed with the last quarter of the plot. It was somewhat anticlimactic compared to the build up, and I feel as though the antagonist/ending wasn’t as well developed as the rest of the story. But over all it was a good listen.

A spinetingling mystery which keeps the goosebumps

A spinetingling mystery which keeps the goosebumps coming! A very well developed storyline which holds the interest of the listener and keeps them spellbound. The characters are well done and very relatable drawing the listener in. The story was absolutely terrifying and I loved it...you could tell there was a lot of research done and it was very interesting I've never heard of some of the horrors which were involved. And the villain is described so well you can visualize him just an eerie creepy foul man. This is my first read by this author but definitely not my last... well done!

I was gifted this Audible as an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Creepy...Sent Chills Up My Spine

Originally I got this book because of the imaginative hook (a girl goes up a tree and never comes down again), but the story turned out to be so much more. I like books that really jack up the creep factor and the author did an amazing job! It's a rarity to find a book that can actually make a witch scary. So many witch stories are like Hocus Pocus, cute, made for children, but far from terrifying. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars, honestly. A rare find.

Vanished

What do you do when your 14 year old best friend disappear? Try to go on with your life even though it still haunts you. What then when, 15 years later, you find she's not the only one? You try and figure out what happened of course and hopefully figure out what's happened before the next missing girl is gone forever.
I loved listening to this book! Creepy yet beautifully written and well read. Can't wait to read more from Erickson.

A Great Listen

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review.   Very interesting and thought provoking tale.   Two strangers drawn together by a similar traumatic teenage experience, work together to find the truth about what happened it the woods.  They both have a theory, but which one will be right?  Time is running out if 5 year intervals means anything.  Well written characters with a fast paced plot that will keep you listening longer then you intended.
