Publisher's Summary
A SERIAL KILLER ON A POISONOUS MISSION PUSHES NIKKI AND HER TEAM TO BREAKING POINT
Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition, and the darker side of life.
What the public doesn't know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.
DI Nikki Galena and her team soon discover this is no hoax, as people start dying from what appears to be alcoholic poisoning. Things rapidly escalate, and as the deaths get more horrific, Nikki realizes they have a serial killer in their midst.

Good ... but,
This series has been severely lagging since they’ve introduced Nikki’s mother.
Her, and her group of old crones are running around like the Snoop Sisters, Jane Marple, and Jessica Fletcher combined.
Anyway .... good story in spite of the subplot.

Creative serial killer
DARKNESS ON THE FENS, Book 10 in the Nikki Galena series, is yet another winner from English author Joy Ellis. This is likely the most complex novel in the series. I do wish the author would end the involvement of Nikki's mother and her crime sleuthing friends Narration by Henrietta Meire is superb as usual.
The novels in this series are standalone.

A bit over the top
I have enjoyed previous volumes in the Nikki Galena series, but both the plot and the breathless narration of this one seems a bit over the top. Nothing in Joseph’s previous character development, nor in the plot seems to warrant such a violent, dishonorable reaction. It just wasn’t believable. It felt every inch a plot device to cause tension.

Flashbacks, Poison, and Murder
Book ten in the DI Nikki Galena series has the team preparing for a scary festival which brings in a lot of money, but also a lot of alcohol, drugs and mischief. But no one knew that it would bring in the type of evil that they would be faced with this year. At first, they suspect alcohol poisoning, but as things escalate, it becomes clear that they have a serial killer on their hands. I like that Nikki’s mom and her friends are a part of the story, with their particular set of skills, and that Joseph’s friend, Vinnie from his military days is back. As the evil engulfs them, Joseph increasingly has problems separating his feelings from the current day and when he was in uniform, and his desire to take out the bad guys threatens to control him. His flashbacks from his time in the military return, and Vinnie tries to convince him that they have to do things by the book. Nikki is having a hard time remembering her daughter whom she lost years earlier, as her birthday reminds her again of all she has lost. The team works feverishly to find the killer, with little to go on. I could not figure out who it was. Great story and an end worth the wait!

A great listen as always
As usual, another great story from Joy Ellis. I'm a big fan of Nikki Galena and Joseph Easter, although this book explored his troubled side more than the previous ones. I have a lot of sympathy for both their characters and the life experiences they've had. I like the addition of Eve and her group of friends to the series as ongoing characters. If you've enjoyed the others in the series, you'll most likely enjoy this one. I strongly recommend reading this series in order to really appreciate the development of the characters and the interrelationships in the world of DI Galena.
Henrietta Meire continues to do a stellar job!

Revelation In Darkness
A complex crime story that had me curious. The unknown is the primary source of angst for the police and their counterparts. The story's baseline is on a festival that is at its best in the dark. It's a massive Halloween like atmosphere anchored in local ghost and horror stories. The villain maintains anonymity in this environment. The story lines Joy Ellis weaves shows the internal bandwidth of darkness that may exist in a person. Vengeance, guilt, personal choices that effects your life, and past traumas creates the levels of darkness that hovers overhead. The response of the characters to the darkness is what fascinated me. The main character's forgiveness of her partner's darkness clearly showed what love is. Great narration s always.

Irritating but strangely addictive
I don't know why I continue with this series - I've never really taken to Nikki Galena, I find Joseph so excruciatingly perfect he sets my teeth on edge. The plots aren't great and nor is the narration. But, as they say, don't let that put you off. For some unknown reason I still avidly purchase each instalment and despite all of my misgivings do genuinely enjoy the experience.

Narration is Awful
I’ve read all books in this series up to this. This is my first time listening on Audible.
This is the aural equivalent of listening to nails on a blackboard. It is one of the most grating audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. The way each of the characters is represented is just irritating and I ended up loathing each of them. I frequently turned the volume down with the shouting and general overacting. Just awful!
I wouldn’t even recommend this if it was included with membership. I wish I hadn’t wasted a credit on it.

Such a disappointment
Everything my wife and I had come to love about the fens series was missing. Sure the characters where all there.... but that was it. No atmosphere, no real undercurrent to an otherwise wayward plot and with no real clues as to the end result. It’s almost as if someone else wrote this altogether.
The only salvation, was Henrietta Meire’s excellent narration, as always.

Another straight- through read
Luckily I was engrossed enough in the story to be able to mostly shut off my irritation with the narrator's rendition of a high-pitched posh-type voice and over emphasises like she's reading a "Boys Own" adventure. The northern English accents were a balm to my ears.

A bit disappointing
I found this book not up to the reasonable high standard of previous books it was okay Just a bit too much unexplained drama
