Publisher's Summary
A darkly irresistible new fantasy set in the infamous Gomorrah Festival, a traveling carnival of debauchery that caters to the strangest of dreams and desires.
Sixteen-year-old Sorina has spent most of her life within the smoldering borders of the Gomorrah Festival. Yet even among the many unusual members of the traveling circus-city, Sorina stands apart as the only illusion-worker born in hundreds of years. This rare talent allows her to create illusions that others can see, feel, and touch, with personalities all their own. Her creations are her family, and together they make up the cast of the festival's freak show.
But no matter how lifelike they may seem, her illusions are still just that - illusions, and not truly real. Or so she has always believed...until one of them is murdered.
Desperate to protect her family, Sorina must track down the culprit and determine how they killed a person who doesn't actually exist. Her search for answers leads her to the self-proclaimed gossip-worker Luca. Their investigation sends them through a haze of political turmoil and forbidden romance and into the most sinister corners of the festival. But as the killer continues murdering Sorina's illusions one by one, she must unravel the horrifying truth before all her loved ones disappear.

This was the perfect...
…vintage 18th-ish Century Gypsy goth fantasy murder mystery. I couldn’t put it down. I retesting characters, perfectly balanced foreshadowing, and a plot twist even I didn’t see coming... actually a couple of them.
This wasn’t just a novel. This was Literature.

Difficult to review
The narrator did an excellent job but the story felt a little like a 3.5/5.
The first hour of the book moves so fast I had to go back and start again - way too many characters and their strange names are introduced to keep track of. Even then by the end of the book I felt there were two major characters and it was unclear who they were.
Also with a young protagonist sometimes the book felt - annoying, with their young and naive perspective.
The REST of the book was really good though which means it’s difficult to recommend for or against. I’m not sure if I regret buying it or not. I’d err on the side of not - but - I strongly hope for improvements in the writing style of any sequel.

It had potential
The frustration is that this could have been a good story, but you didn't get good character development of her family so when they start dying it is hard to care. Since the deaths are the main driving events in the plot, it is kind of tricky to get engaged if you don't really care about the characters.
The world building is fine for Gomorrah but beyond the city there's no substance so when the big political events are happening it is hard to really track which completely interchangeable kingdom or city or whatever has the event going on.
The narrator was difficult to listen to. On an emotional scale of 1-10 (with 1 being stoic and 10 being completely emotionally distraught) she spends 70% of the book at an 8. It made her voice unnecessarily strident and unpleasant. It also meant that when something that actually deserved that sort of emphasis came up, it was indistinguishable from the normal background over wrought narration.

I loved the plot! It is one of the most unique books I’ve ever read! The main character has so relatable and awesome! However, it was kind of slow. There was not as much action as I thought. The villain was also pretty easy to pick out. Overall an enjoyable and new read!
