Publisher's Summary

King David was a complicated, conflicted man of flesh. But too often he is viewed as an Americanized shepherd boy on a Sunday school felt board or a New Testament saint alongside the Virgin Mary. Not only does this neglect one of the Bible’s most complex stories of sin and redemption, it also bypasses the gritty, life lessons inherent in the amazing true story of David.

Mark Rutland shreds the felt-board character, breaks down the sculpted marble statue, and unearths the real David of the Bible. Both noble and wretched, neither a saint nor a monster, at times victorious and other times a failure, David was, through it all, a man after God’s own heart.

I'm not a David scholar...

Bought this book to learn more about David than the famous "David & Goliath" story, and to get it in a single narrative rather than hunting David's story out in the Bible. I also hoped to clarify why David would be called "a man after God's own heart" since he was seriously-flawed and broke a few commandments.

This book satisfied my questions. I appreciated learning more about David's warrior activities and about his failures as a husband & father. The author educated readers in the differences of acceptable customs/morals of David's time vs. of our times, which explains some things we would "call David out on."

The author makes a good explanation for why David was still called a man after God's own heart, even with all his sins.

Empowering!

I'm so thankful for this break down of King Davids life. He was beautifully human! This read also reminds you of how X rated the Bible is. I was clutching my pearls quite a few times and had to take a break. Jesus! Moreover it reminds you that God is not caught off guard by any of this worlds foolishness and despite what we feel or see He is still in control. This book changed my perspective on Gods love and mercy for the greater and I'm about to listen to it 2 more times! Must read.

I’d probably skip this.

It’s mostly a commentary of the scriptures. There are some parts that feel a little too secular and not enough spiritual in the interpretation.

“Old Dr. Mark” gets “old” after hearing it dozens of times.

Must read/listen to

I loved this book. What some had a problem with, I enjoyed. All too often, Christian books seem to want to satisfy a self-imposed "boring" tax. Not this one. I highly recommend!

History at it's finest!

Kudos and thanks to Dr. Mark for such a fantastic read!
I always wanted to know more in depth about David and this sure fir the bill. He narrates this in such a way that brings such clarity and understanding to the life of this great and sometimes not so great king.
The modern dialog really helps you get in to the book.
I have recommended and sent this to people I know!
Thank you again Dr. Mark!

Excellent!!

As a former student of Southeastern University this work more than met my expectations of Dr. Rutlands work. He taught us often from the pulpit about David. This book was a great reminder of those teachings and yet still an even
deeper dive into the mystery that David was. I love the candid and raw approach to telling the story. It serves to make this ancient King relatable, and shows the mercy of God in a profound way. I highly recommend this book.

Wow, I can not begin to Praise God as greatly as I need to for such an incredibly honest and non-religious anointed interpretation. It does us no good to delight ourselves in our fairy tale interpretation of these stories and the world which we are commissioned to reach for & with Jesus, are placed at risk when we dress these stories and Bible figures up and make them into perfect saints. They are what they are just like us. We are imperfect, but if we love God and continue to seek His Face we can walk in His Grace.
Thank you Mark
