"I know that many of you here have waited years for this Hour," Mater Motley said, using that voice that, though it was barely conversational in volume, was somehow heard everywhere. "The waiting is over. Tomorrow there will be no dawn. Only midnight, absolute and eternal." And so begins a new chapter in the epic story of 16-year-old Candy Quackenbush and her journeys through the world of the Abarat, where every hour is an island in one eternal day, and nothing is as it seems.

Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood for 1,000 years, welcoming countless children into its embrace. It is a place of miracles and blissful rounds of treats and seasons, where every childhood whim may be satisfied.… There is a price to be paid, of course, but young Harvey Swick, bored with his life and beguiled by Mr. Hood's wonders, does not stop to consider the consequences. It is only when the House shows it's darker face - when Harvey discovers the pitiful creatures that dwell in its shadows - that he comes to doubt Mr. Hood's philanthropy.

The Barbarossa family’s roots are far more ancient and ethereal, but they are bound to the Gearys by a shared history of murder, insanity, and adultery. When Rachel Geary and Galilee, the seductive prince of the Barbarossa clan, fall in love, they unleash powerful enmities that could destroy both dynasties. Shorter and more conventional than some of Barker’s other work, this novel is especially rich with complex, passionate, three-dimensional characters, lush settings, and elegant language.

Chiliad consists of two interrelated stories, stories filtered through the melancholy imagination of a narrator perched on the banks of a river that flows backward and forward through time. The first movement, "Men and Sin", takes place in the millennial year of 1000 AD. The second, "A Moment at the River's Heart", occurs exactly 1000 years - the length of a "chiliad" - later, as the new millennium approaches.

Publisher's Summary
Candy Quackenbush's adventures in the amazing world of the Abarat are getting more strange by the hour. Christopher Carrion, the Lord of Midnight, has sent his henchman to capture her. "Why?" she wonders. What would Carrion want with a girl from Minnesota? And why is Candy beginning to feel that the world of Abarat is familiar to her? Why can she speak words of magic she doesn't even remember learning?
There is a mystery here. And Carrion, along with his fiendish grandmother, Mater Motley, suspects that whatever Candy is, she could spoil their plans to take control of the Abarat.
Now Candy's companions must race against time to save her from the clutches of Carrion, and she must solve the mystery of her past before the forces of Night and Day clash and Absolute Midnight descends upon the islands.
A final war is about to begin. And Candy is going to need to make some choices that will change her life forever.

Imaginative but predictable
This sequel picks up where the first book, Abarat, left off. I would recommend reading the first book before this one. Candy Quackenbush continues to travel without much guidance or reason to many different islands. She meets many new and interesting characters and puts her life in jeopardy on several occasions. Meanwhile, she is slowly (and I mean slowly!) discovering what purpose she really has with the Abarat. You should know this is only book two of a four part series; however, the last two books have yet to be published. Like book one, it ends with much still to be resolved. I doubt I’ll read or listen to anymore of this series. It was interesting enough, but the predictability of this story became its undoing for me. I am a big Clive Barker fan, but this is not his best work.

Great book BUT a section is out of order!
Any additional comments?
This is another great book by Barker as the follow up to the Abarat. Just note that this audio book seems to have a short part (or two) out of order! makes for disjoint listening. Lucky for me I have a hard copy of the book and was able to get the story straight. Maybe this can get fixed.

Richard Ferrone was outstanding with the reading; I could hear each character's voice and attitude. The audio quality changed occasionally which was a little disappointing but had little effect on the co titration of the story.

My Favorite of the Three Out So Far
As the title says, this is my favorite of the three Abarat books currently published.
The world is already introduced, so there isn't any need to start building it up. We already have an idea of the character's personalities and how they may react to certain situations. There is a good amount of action and magic being cast around and about. Characters clash and some give their lives to their cause. You'll meet new characters and fall even more in love with the ones you knew before. Clive Barker will not let you down in this fantasy adventure.
But first, I'll say what I said about the first audiobook: Richard Ferrone may not be the best narrator for this series to some. I personally really enjoy his narration. But if he is not your cup of tea, I would highly recommend reading the book. you'll also get to see the amazing illustrations from Clive Barker.

Great, but one part was wonky
I enjoy this story so much! This is a revisit for me since I read the books when I was in high school.
There is a part in the first chapter - I believe it was the first chapter - that was out of order, which is disappointing because it messes up the flow of the book. And a couple times a chapter would end and in the same breath, the next chapter would begin...so, splicing issue?
Also, for some reason - maybe it was more me than him - I couldn't get into Ferrone's voices for the characters. Old characters seemed a little different than how he did it in book one, and several new characters sounded alike... I know there are a billion new characters that we come across in the Abarat, so I can't really hold it against him, but I just thought I'd note it.
What I loved was that there was a PDF with Barker's art!! Abarat is definitely a visual read, so it was nice to get the drawings along with the narration.
It's a great book! Can't wait to listen to the third!

A Magical Journey
I've been an on-off fan of Clive Barker for many years, loving some of his books like Weaveworld and feeling a bit lukewarm about others like Galilee so I wasn't sure what to expect with his foray into children's literature, Arabat. What took me by surprise was the magical quality of the story and the wonderful descriptive narrative about the parallel world of Arabat. The discipline of writing for children was obviously good for Barker; the book is scary, but not gruesome horror, romantic but without the gratuitous sex scenes of many of his novels - a really good tale. Candy, the John Brothers and a host of amusing characters made the journey through Arabat an exciting and enjoyable one and when the story ended I couldn't wait to see "what happened next" so I downloaded the next instalment, Days of Magic, Nights of War, which is a great listen as well. Richard Ferrone's narration was good, not great, but the action and enchantment of the story carried you away and any quibbles about voice were forgotten in the excitement of moment. Definitely a great listen and I can't wait for the next instalment of the story.

Amazing Story- But bad editing...
On a Technical Note- There's something wrong with a small section of the recording... While listening to chapter 1 - it skipped to chapter 2 then returned back to chapter 1... very disconcerting but easy to get back into the story after that...
Overall an amazing story! And- even better- audible sent me a pdf containing the paintings Clive Barker printed in his hard copy versions of the Abarat- which makes this more worth it than you can imagine!
Beautiful story. Imaginative and spellbinding!! Highly recommended!!
