Publisher's Summary
Alex McKnight - hero of Steve Hamilton's best-selling, award-winning, and beloved private eye series - is back in a high-stakes, nail-biting thriller, facing the most dangerous enemy he's ever encountered.
On the Mediterranean Sea, a vacationer logs on to the security-camera feed from his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Something about his living room seems not quite right - the room is bright, when he's certain he'd left the curtains closed. Rewinding through the feed, he sees an intruder. When he shifts to the bedroom camera, he sees the dead body.
Martin T. Livermore is the key suspect in the abduction and murder of at least five women, but he's never been this sloppy before. When the FBI finally catches him in Scottsdale, he declares he'll only talk to one person: a retired police officer from Detroit, now a private investigator living in the tiny town of Paradise, Michigan. A man named Alex McKnight.
Livermore means nothing to McKnight, but it soon becomes clear McKnight means something to Livermore...and that Livermore's capture was only the beginning of an elaborate, twisted plot with McKnight at the center. In a hunt that will take him across the country and to the edge of his limits, McKnight fights to stop a vicious killer before he can exact his ultimate revenge. And his grand finale will cut closer to home than he ever could have imagined.
Critic Reviews
“Brilliant...The plot develops in multiple unexpected directions, and its logical convolutions are matched by Hamilton’s deepening portrayal of his fully realized lead.” (Publishers Weekly)
“Alex McKnight’s been put through the ringer before, but never quite like this....Steve Hamilton rakes his hero over the coals, taking him to hell and back as he faces off with a man so evil that he’d scare the hell out of the devil himself. Full of twists and turns, Hamilton’s latest McKnight novel is raw, dark, and absolutely relentless....Dead Man Running proves that Steve Hamilton is one of the best crime writers on the planet, and his latest showing will leave readers begging for more.” (The Real Book Spy)
“Hamilton’s long-awaited reboot of the McKnight series is a streamlined, gut-wrenching thriller.” (Booklist)

Don’t. Just don’t.
I’ve read all the Alex McKnight books. I’ve enjoyed them all. This is the first one I’ve listened to and maybe that’s the difference. But I thought this one was awful. The story was ridiculous. Totally silly. There were parts when I cringed. Literally couldn’t wait for it to be over.

somewhat disappointing
I so enjoyed the other books in the series, and was really excited when I saw that the new book was coming out. However, it's very dark... I kind of have to wonder what kind of person could imagine this type of torture and, just the general story line. I really like Alex McKnight, and it seems as though there could be another book, sequel. I hope that it will be more along the lines of the original series, and not dark like this one. the narrator that was excellent, as always.

Sadly, A Departure From Why I Like Alex McKnight
Not a fan of psycho mystery thrillers. Dragging Alex away from the UP removes the major character I’ve come to love in this series: Paradise, Michigan. Absent that, it’s just another run of the mill brilliant psycho killer versus intrepid cop. Not terribly interesting or original. Sadly.

Disappointed
I have enjoyed previous Alex McKnight books but this one was a disappointment. Long, tedious, and gratuitous descriptions of inflictions of horror. At first I thought they were a mere set up and the focus would then be on the chase, but that was not to be. The plot is also silly in many respects and even mundane descriptions are overdone.

Tedious and Unsuccessfully Brutal
I enjoyed Steve Hamilton's other Alex McNight stories mostly due to the small town characters and Upper Peninsula locations. This book has none of the small town appeal and to me excessive evil just for its shock effect. I've seen the same thing happen with other authors on my opinion not a worthy episode in this series......

Alex McKnight or Alex Cross?
This, to me, this could have been a standalone title. There is minimal linkage to the Alex McKnight life in U.P. that was a strong influence in the first 10 books in the series. If you changed the name of the lead character from Alex McKnight to Alex Cross you would have thought you were reading a James Patterson novel. This book changes the place from Michigan to Phoenix. All new characters except for the very end where there is one mention of his friends and associates from U.P. The violence feels over the top. The attempts to torment Alex are ridiculous. I was very disappointed with book #11 of the McKnight series. I think Alex McKnight series died in book #11.

Too much morbid detail..
Struggled to finish it. Loved nearly all others, but this one spent entirely too much time through the eyes of the antagonist, and went into entirely too much detail on some things I honestly would rather live my life not even ever have thought or know about... Details are good, but not through the eyes of a compete psychopath.

Really disappointing
I have enjoyed the Alex McKnight series. What a disappointing way to end it though. Will there be more? I hope the author realizes he's going to lose loyal Alex followers with this kind of writing. None of the great UP characters and locales. But also McKnight seems idiotic and weak in this story. This is not the leading character we've grown to enjoy through this series. Looks like Steve Hamilton just wanted to pound a book out and didn't put any of his expertise into it. Tedious and predictable all the way through.

subject matter too dark for me
I have loved all the other books but this one just went a little bit too dark. taking him out of his environment in the woods made it not as good, just didn't like storyline.
