Publisher's Summary

This grave can never be opened.

The head of Scotland’s most powerful crime family is brutally murdered; his body dumped inside an ancient grave in a remote cemetery.

This murder can never be forgotten.

Detectives Max Craigie and Janie Calder arrive at the scene, a small town where everyone has secrets to hide. They soon realise this murder is part of a blood feud between two Scottish families that stretches back to the 1800s. One thing’s for certain: it might be the latest killing, but it won’t be the last....

This killer can never be caught.

As the body count rises, the investigation uncovers large-scale corruption at the heart of the Scottish Police Service. Now Max and Janie must turn against their closest colleagues - to solve a case that could cost them far more than just their lives....

worth it

I'm a fan of the United Kingdom crime mysteries and this was a good one. Angus Kings narration draws you in to this gritty crime tale.

STORYLINE IS NOT FOR ME

READS LIKE A 1920-30s US CRIME FAMILY STORY. NOT MY PREFERRED STYLE AND A DISAPPOINTMENT AS, IN THE PAST, I'VE ENJOYED MYSTERY NOVELS SET IN SCOTLAND. ITS WELL WRITTEN AND EASY TO FOLLOW, WITH INTERESTING CHARACTERS,
SO IF YOU ENJOY THIS GENRE THIS MAY BE THE NOVEL FOR YOU.

Enjoyable

Interesting story with good characters. I am looking forward to the next in the series. Truthfully though, may have liked this more as an audiobook than I would have in print! I adore Angus King as a narrator. I am more apt to buy a book if I see that he is the narrator.

One caveat (spoiler alert) - I was disappointed with the bit thrown in after the real ending of this story. Max’s wife shows up after a significant separation and suddenly everything is hunky-dory between them. Ugh. Too pat/trite. Throughout this story they’re separated, and Max very much misses her. But, we’re not really told why they separated beyond she didn’t want to move (more to it?). No contact between them and suddenly poof, she’s there and “home.” Wha? Why? Hopefully this will get fleshed out in future.

This is a Truly Enjoyable Book

I've been into Scottish detectives thrillers for a bit now, ever since I discovered all of J.D. Kirk's series: DCI Jack Logan & the spinoff series: Ex DCI Chief Robert Hoon.
while waiting for next book of b0th series I've been fortunate to enjoy several other Scottish Authors.
Neil Lancaster is a very good writer. I really liked this story. the dialog was quick & witty and DS Craig's internal thoughts & conversations were well plotted and brought depth and understanding to the character. the story was different from many other stories of lone wolf going after head of syndicate boss and bent cops.
It was put together well and although there was the requisite violence, it was minimal & realistic and not so brutal I was grossed out. I was also happy that this detective has a dog, I loved how he 'acquired ' Nutmeg.
it must be noted that while I am looking for good Scottish stories, I'm completely spoiled and look exclusively for narration by Angus King. Mr. king has such an excellent voice and possesses wide and diverse
abilities to distinguish characters and is capable of doing many diverse accents. Mr. King is an actor and this sets him apart from many who do narration, but are unable to project the subtle inflections in a voice to convey meaning, as he can.
Thanks again Mr. Lancaster for your intriguing story and Mr. King for bringing his characters to life!!!!!!

Not normally a fan of organized crime, this book took me on a journey I couldn't resist. Lots of winding twists and turns the plot keeps you waiting for the next one.

Great book!

Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story line. Good triumphs over evil. Characters were well developed and believable. Appreciated that there was little foul language. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.
