The city of Elendhaven sulks on the edge of the ocean. Wracked by plague, abandoned by the South, stripped of industry and left to die. But not everything dies so easily. Story
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya - the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.

The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Publisher's Summary
"Ezzo's dark tone and emotional connection terrify and comfort listeners in equal measure. Not for the faint of heart."—AudioFile on Dead Silence
Titanic meets The Shining in S.A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn't yet ended.
A GHOST SHIP.
A SALVAGE CREW.
UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS.
Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate.
What they find at the other end of the signal is a shock: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick trip through the Aurora reveals something isn’t right.
Whispers in the dark. Flickers of movement. Words scrawled in blood. Claire must fight to hold onto her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora, before she and her crew meet the same ghastly fate.
A Macmillan Audio production from Tor Nightfire
Critic Reviews
"Take the wreck of RMS Titanic, set it adrift in space, then imagine coming across it years later. At the intersection of science fiction and horror, Dead Silence is the ultimate haunted house story." (Alma Katsu, author of The Deep and The Hunger)
"Creepy and satisfying; I'll be checking under my bed tonight." (Sarah Pinsker, author of We Are Satellites and the Nebula Award-winning A Song for a New Day)
"The richly realized world that S.A. Barnes creates draws us in, and the relatable characters charm us. The dread mounts to a powerful conclusion." (David Wellington, author of The Last Astronaut)

Pleasantly surprised
For author's I don't recognize I try not to hold them to the same standard I would a renowned writer. I'm this case you can throw that out the window. The masterful and artistic way the story is told, events described and twist unfolds keeps you listening and paying attention for clues. Despite the predictable nature of the story, which come on it's a ghost ship story, you will enjoy every gruesome heart-wrenching second of it! 100% recommend!

Harlequin Romance in spaaaaaacccceee!!!!
Mind you, I have never read a Harlequin novel, but if a cheesy romance in space sounds good to you, party on. I had to tap out with 4hr 41 min remaining. I could not listen to one more hug me but don't touch me moment by this bi-polar main character. I really wanted Ghost ship in space. This is not Ghost ship in space....well to be fair, I tapped out before ghost may or may not have show up. The main Character Claire is so poorly written, I had to check to see if a dude wrote this. This extreme bi-polar captain was such a broken character, the love story was so painful to listen to, I just couldn't take it anymore.
I really think the reader was left with such a whiny convoluted mess that she did not have a chance for a great performance. She is a talented reader, but this story....man, it had to be rough being ready to cry with every sentence, but not being allowed to because the main character can overcome anything except when she couldn't, but really she's tough as nails, wipes tear, because she can't handle anything...now act like a teenage girl, then woman up be brave, conquer all, until she needs a hug, but don't touch her, unless she wants you too, but run away once you do......exhausted just writing this. Can't imagine what the next four hours and forty one minutes had in store for me.
Generic characters, unlikable main hero and the poor reader ready to cry with every sentence made this a book I just couldn't finish. The writer obviously has chops as the few scenes of carnage were well written and had me wanting more. She just needs to work on characters. I didn't like one of them, well except the dead ones, they were fine. if this book was free I wouldn't have said a thing, but I paid full price and didn't finish. so yeah, my two cents, move along nothing to see here unless Harlequin in Spppppaaaaccceeeee! is your thing.

Couldn’t finish
Like others, I really wanted to like this book. It seemed to have all the pieces of a horror story I would love. Unfortunately, there’s not a single likable character, and the main character is so loathsome it ruins any chance of this being a good story for me.
In short, the vast majority of this book is self-deprecating internal monologues by a character that hates herself so much you as a reader can’t possibly help but feel the same. I’m typically an empathetic reader, but I just wanted her to shut up so we could get to the actual plot/mystery. In the end, never having to hear her utter another whoa is me diatribe was more worth it to me than resolving the mystery at the crux of this book. Thank goodness for audibles generous return policy.

Obviously Haunted Spaceship is Obviously Haunted
Struggled to finish this one. At first I was really invested in the mystery, but with the timeline jumping around and characters being so poorly fleshed out, I just lost interest. It feels like this book wanted to be a mash-up of Event Horizon and The Haunting of Hill House, but ended up being more like Disney's Haunted Mansion in space. And there's a desperate attempt at a romance crammed in there sideways like it would somehow compensate for the lack of character development.

After all the buildup...
I pre-ordered this months ago, as soon as it came out for pre-order. I'd read reviews raving about this book, so couldn't wait for it, having seen it compared to "ghost ship," "the shining," and "Titanic." But I have to say, I agree with one of my fellow reviewers. Claire was owned by her past and didn't seem strong enough to move on, yet she was hurt by someone saying she wouldn't be a good captain? I thought her story dominated the horror, which was the part I personally was looking forward to most. At the time of writing this I haven't actually finished the book yet and fully intend to, but I can't see my opinion changing. I don't like Claire much I'm afraid. I find her annoying and frustrating. I much prefer Kyle and Lordess.

Okay just wow. The spooky atmosphere and mystery in this was wonderful and this book is definitely a new favorite. Someone needs to turn this into a movie because I need it ASAP!
This hit everything I love in a good space horror. The building tension of what Claire's team will find on board mixed with the horrors they are finding that keeps the story spooky and mysterious 10/10

Solid sci-fi - not a horror
This is a tough one to review.
It takes a chapter or two to get going, but ramps up from there. The story was interesting and the characters were distinct and intriguing. I wanted to learn about the ship they found, and it's mysteries kept tugging at me.
Around halfway through it all clicked together for me, and I enjoyed the rest of the book with a sense of accomplishment, feeling like I understood authorial intent.
I had a reluctance in the earlier part of the book because I went into it thinking I'd be scared - no - terrified. This isn't a horror book; it's a sci-fi book that has intense moments and eerie imagery, and if I had gone in expecting that I think I'd have had a much better time. Of course, horror is subjective, and results may vary.
I enjoyed the narrator most of the time, though there are a few parts where I wish she didn't shout quite as much. She is very emotive, and I would definitely listen to other books she has narrated.
4/5, would recommend to fans of sci-fi or newcomers who enjoy mystery and a bit of a thrill.

Not what I expected - in a good way
Okay, starting out, I was hesitant. I’m not a big sci-fi fan and, frankly, a synopsis of “Titanic meets the Shining” sounds worrying. But, the book was recommended to me by someone’s whose taste in books is usually good so I gave it a go.
And I’m happy I did! The story is engaging, with just enough suspense and surprises to keep it riveting. The narration is excellent, with the narrator clearly mirroring the emotions of the main character, and the ending was not what I expected at all. I would, and have in fact, definitely recommend this (audio)book.

Too much yelling and a self absorbed main character
Dead silence is a very interesting story and the universe it is set in is well thought out, however the author has spent too much time being over descriptive of the main characters emotions, not believable that she would ever be allowed to lead any team. Its is a similar story to ghost ship but set in space.

Binge listened. Very enjoyable.
Creepy ghost ship full of dead. A great story, unsettling thou a bit predictable.
I think the narrator did a great job. There was a few loud outbursts that took me by surprise and I had to turn it down.

cheesier then a stuff crust pizza
this is one of those books which helps you realise that anyone is allowed to attempt writing a book.
the narrator has a nice voice, but all the males in the book sound like a mix if Kermit the frog and gollum.

Would make a great movie
But very difficult to get through as an audiobook. The story is good but the telling of it…not so much. The internal monologue of the narrator was repetitive and quickly became tedious and the reading verged on hysterical much of the time. Maybe would have been much better to have read it rather than listened.

Titanic II or The Space Overlook
Outstanding!
Dead Silence's inspirations are quite obvious but there's plenty here to keep even the most jaded horror buff listening. Characters are likeable and interesting and the plot scampers along fast enough that you won't want to take off the headphones. Lauren Ezzo's reading does it more than justice too.

Really Good Debut
I love space books and have been looking for a good spooky one for a while. Usually, they miss the mark a bit for me. This one was right on the money. Think Event Horizon and The Shining rolled up.
Can’t wait to see what this author does next.

Intense Suspense!
Just a great story, read well. It wears it's influences on its sleeve, but it's still a very original sci fi horror novel. I love the narrator's voice, too.

salvage a ship they said...
it will be fun they said.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. I'm a fan of horror and I didn't expect to be so scared. it is scary. it's easy to say what you would do in their situation but people say that about any horror fiction. and who knows what you would really do in their situation. it was an easy story to follow along. the voice actor did a good job portraying each of the characters. defintley give this a read or listen if you are interested in space or horror.

Great space horror
I liked this book a lot the story gets 5 stars but the wild changes in the volume of the narration really took me out of it. I spent half the time adjusting the volume so I could hear without my ears hurting.
