It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Amid the leftovers of civilization, ex-Army Ranger Jason Larsen is reminded of the meaning of hope, family, and loyalty by a dog and a young boy who are as alone as he is. The survivors he seems to collect become family, and that is very bad news for those who think they run the apocalypse.

It's been three long years since Deadbreak. That's what everyone's calling it - the day the dead rose. Every day since then, Jeremiah Reid has had one goal: to make his way back to his daughter. With his four-legged companion, Joe, Jeremiah has to travel a lawless wasteland teeming with zombies, bandits, and worse, like people who put anchovies on pizza (you know who you are). It's a new world out there, and no one is safe. People are weary, cities are in ruin, supplies are scarce, and brains are on the menu.

Disappointing from the start...
I'll start by admitting two things: 1) I'm only eight chapters into book one and 2) I'm a zombie horror snob.
I've read so many amazing books and series like White Flag of The Dead and Arisen, that this is what I've come to expect. Relatable characters, gripping story, flowing conversations, and believable(ish) scenes. So far this book hasn't delivered any of it.
The primary characters are just so stereotypical they are unbelievable. Conversations are choppy and awkward, there is NO sense of fear or panick even when death is imminent. It all just falls flat.

It was an ok start
I'm trying this new author and the story is ok so far. I just think the narrator is the one who brings the story to life. Hopefully the next books Narrator is better and doesn't sound like their reading a paragraph in front of a high school class

I wish I'd read this
This was alright. I'm really into strong female roles but this was a bit much, not wanting to give any spoilers. There were parts I got confused on because it seemed like time was missing (I'm sure it was jumping forward) but there were things that I'd be like wait, when did they get to this place?
I also didnt understand how they immediately knew what they were when it started and I couldn't figure out how much time was passing or had passed since it all started. How did a group of skinheads take over a ton of Texas in the course of a week? idk maybe that was one of the parts I missed bc of all the jumping around.
overall, it was a fun listen for about half the book and the time did fly by. I was left feeling like it was missing a LOT though.

Amateur hour
Seems very amateur. There are so many discrepancies. I’d pick it apart but that would take all night.
The narration is decent but definitely does not match thus story. I would listen to this narrator again but not in this context.
I will avoid this author in the future.

Great start to a great series!
Don’t listen to the bad reviews! I’m on the 2nd Month part of this series and can tell you the author does a great job! I’ve placed this in my top ten with a few caveats… as you listen you may find things repetitive but get over it so you can enjoy the adventure!! Arisen, The Undead, White Flag of the Dead, The Remaining, Mountain Man, Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, Commune are some of the others in my top ten. Although this writer needs to make some improvements this story covers all of the US and is coming together spectacularly.
It’s exciting fun all around!

Okay series start
this was okay. mediocre but checks a lot of the boxes. My biggest issue is with the timeline; the set (1-4) takes place in the first week. The enemy characters, who had nothing to do with the outbreak, were acting too organized and too evil for the first few days. The survival of the fittest mindset of the "bad guys" was just too quick of a reaction.

Good Read
Loved it. I enjoyed the different characters and their interactions with each other. I loved that Sparks and her group had no problem taking out any bad guys that threatened them. This was non stop action. My only complaint is that these books are too short. I hope Sparks and her group's story is not over, I would like to see these characters again. Till then I will read the spin off books "Dead American".
