Story
Camille Ellis has tracked many killers during her career, but this time it's personal. Cut off from conclave resources, she won't let a small thing like a suspension keep her from accepting Cord Graeson's offer of help. Pretending to be mated to him is one way to secure allies, but the best that can be said of the Chandler Pack is they haven't killed or eaten her.

The pay is crap, but the tips keep the lights on in her personal haunted mansion and her pantry stocked with ramen. Life is about as normal as it gets for an ex-necromancer hiding among humans - until the society that excommunicated Grier offers her a second chance at being more than ordinary. Since I was born, I was destined to be one thing - the Alpha’s mate. It should be every girl’s dream. Not mine, though. He’s too dark and damaged, and I’ve got a secret he can never know: I’m not a true wolf. Instead of waiting for him to figure out that I’m an abomination, I left on my 15th birthday. But I didn’t go far. No way in hell would I let him drive me from the town I love. Ten years later, I’m still hiding in plain sight. When I occasionally see him on the street - deadly, sexy, powerful - I just walk by. Keep my head down. Until that night.

In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

Are they writing stories for Penthouse Magazine?
I wanted to like this book and the series that came after it but while most of the female writers these days turn a fantasy novel into a romance novel in the third or fourth book, this one starts talking about sex about 2 hours into the first book.
If it was just a mention of sex, that would be alright but to go into the constant thoughts of sex in a character who have the childish ideas of a person with little experience and lots of insecurities is unnecessary and doesn't add anything worthwhile to the storyline.
The narrator pronounces her words clearly enough and in a sweet voice, however, the only way to tell if a character is male or female is to listen for a pronoun. Even the male voices are very feminine.

Might have been a decent story ...
I couldn't finish this book. The narrator completely flips any quips or humor peppered throughout the story. It was so irritating that I simply couldn't continue listening near the halfway mark. I suggest they re-record then republish this book.

Fast paced story
I like this author. I've read two other series. So I knew going in that this book would be worth my time. This was an interesting take on supernaturals. There were different species that were unique to me. A cameo from the Black Dog series characters. So I like UF with some mystery and suspense. I gravitate towards stories with strong females in investigative roles. This book / series fits. A mystery surrounding a serial killer kept the pace of the book moving. This book ends with a cliffhanger so be prepared to move onto the next book. Narrator's timing and voices were good. I didn't love the voice of Cord or how some of his dialog was delivered. It didn't fit with the emotion of the scene. One example is when he tells Ellis that he messed up. However, easy to overlook and I would switch back to ebook to re-read a scene

🌻I struggled to keep focused on this book.🌻
🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻V from Kansas 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
(I restarted this book, three times, and still felt lost about the different types of characters. Maybe it’s just me but, I just couldn’t continue. It’s rare that I just give up, on a book, but I threw in the towel, on this one.)
Update....I restarted this book a fourth time and after the introduction of the plot, characters and the characters’ supernatural gifts, I started to really get into the book. Be aware that this is a trilogy and book one and two do end in cliffhangers. If you acquired this book through the “ included” section, you’ll be happy to know the entire trilogy is included in this section.
I feel I must address another reader’s review that compared this book to the writings of penthouse. She must be referring to a different book because neither book one or two contains any sex😭!
What this trilogy has been is a supernatural, paranormal crime book with a slow burn romance, on the side. The Hero, Heroine and their friends, are on a hunt for a kidnapper and killer of young girls. There are some disturbing descriptions of the state of the bodies but, the author definitely hasn’t gone overboard. I’m glad I tried this book again.

Good but frustrating
Overall I found the story and narration good and engaging. However I found the relationship between the two main characters frustrating. As in the fact that the man never one seem to get verbal consent for his actions. And Justin seemed to act without checking if this was actually what the girls want. It’s made me uncomfortable and more than a little angry. It seems like the whole time he was thinking “who needs consent when you’re hot” this continued right up until the end of the book and the final scene was so blatantly disrespectful it almost made me scream.

I enjoyed the great originality!
Dead in the Water by Haley Edwards and narrated by Stephanie Einstein is a fantasy that has a group of fae looking into crimes committed by fae. The main gal is unique in that she can take on some of the characteristics of those she touches. She is used at crime scenes to go see who/ what was killed and what might have been there. This case was different. Very exciting.
The narration was fair.

I made it almost half way through the book but the main character speent so much time wallowing it bogged down the story and I got board. I didn't even bother skipping to the end to see how it finished which is what I normally do when I don't like a book. No closure necessary with this one. I don't care about any of the characters enough to need it.

Love the world, hate the love interest
I absolutely love the works built in this book (and the second trilogy I accidentally read before this one). The magical creatures and power dynamics are great and well fleshed out.
But, and I hate to say this because I really enjoyed the coupling in the second trilogy, I can’t stand the controlling, manipulative, self-centred actions of the make love interest. Every other aspect of the book I enjoyed and would still recommend, if you’re not in it for the romance.

Couldn't continue with this narrator
The narrator has chosen to make the lead sound very young while simultaneously stripping her of all personality. The tone of voice barely changes, no matter how dramatic events get or which character is speaking. It makes the whole thing very unengaging. Gave it up at chapter 4.

Big disappointment
I gave this a go because I just finished listening to the first two books of The Foundling series by the same author (starting with Bayou Born) which were brilliant. Is this book even by the same author? It’s awful! Plot, characters, relationship, chemistry - all of them need a lot of work. Perhaps this was early work by the author and their skills needed work, but whatever the case, avoid this series and jump straight to The Foundling series if you want to try this author. That series is genuinely great.

Enjoyable
Despite the crime and death, this felt like a story you could just sit back and relax too. Like an easy listening song with heavier lyrics.
