Insipid Heroine

What would have made Deadly Scandal better?

So I very rarely write reviews but after wading through this book I just had to comment. I wanted to like this lead character but there is nothing admirable about her. She is entirely clueless about the world around her. Her decision making would have ended her life many times over throughout the book. And the author relies entirely on the dashing man to save her.

Also the author's use of internal monologues is tedious. Just lazy story telling. As Chekhov said "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass"

Has Deadly Scandal turned you off from other books in this genre?

No there are wonderful, resourceful, crafty, funny, intelligent, savvy women heroines in this between the wars era.

What aspect of Henrietta Meire’s performance would you have changed?

Ms. Meire was a fine voice actor.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance.

lntriging

A wonderful beginning to the Deadly series. I enjoyed the lead character, Olivia, very much. How she discovers the truth about her murdered husband & proceeds to hunt for his killer was believable. And I loved the narrator. She brought life to the characters. I ordered the second book before I even finished this one!!

Meh...Nothing special

I found the story slightly interesting but the narrator was awful. Monotone most of time. Sounds like she is just reading the book most of the time. But then she gets better and my interest is slightly more. But then she descends back into reading tone. I will probably slog thru to the end just to find out "who did it and why" but doubt I will listen to any more books in this series. Not with this narrator

Needs better narrator

The story and idea are good, but a narrator with a recurring speech impediment and who is monotone that all the male characters sounded like robocalls🙄….drove me to almost abandon this book and series as a whole!

English proof reader required

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I found the character in this book so naive and stupid it was beyond belief.
The narratives male voices need working on but otherwise she performed well.
I also think that if this book was proof read it should be done by an English person, not American, we do not travel by 'blocks' and certainly we did not in the pre war days, just one of the fopars made.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kate Parker again?

No

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Narrator was good, just needs to work on male voices a bit more, but other wise very well done

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Deadly Scandal?

All of them

Any additional comments?

Americans writing about period English people need to do more home work

Good start then....hmmm

I thought the book started very well and was intrigued by its twists. However other than another twist which was interesting I found the book entirely predictable. The narrator didn’t do any favours to the book either with her putting on different voices which were very irritating.
