Publisher's Summary

Fight for your death.

When regular high schooler Grady Hake is mistakenly taken by the Angel of Death, he thinks his life is over. Then, he wakes up on a prison shuttle bound for Van Diemann’s Planet, a penal colony run by brutal gangs of criminal cultivators.

This is his life now, and if he wants to survive it, he’ll have to learn to harness his unique death spirit, make friends with alien outcasts, appease a band of hungry ghosts, and fight his way into one of the strongest gangs on the planet.

From Eden Hudson, best-selling author of Rogue Dungeon and Path of the Thunderbird, comes a brand-new series you won't want to stop listening to. Death Cultivator is a sci-fi wuxia for fans of Shonen manga and anime such as Hunter x Hunter, One Piece, and Deadman Wonderland.

Ot that good

Wasn’t a very good book ... no one wants to think that what happened to the mc could happen to them no matter who your are ... found my self skipping to the ens of chapters over and over again because misery is the main theme of this book

Odd Story, Dummy MC

I only made it a few hours in so take my review with a grain of salt.

Minor spoiler ahead:

Without giving too much away, MC is accidentally reaped by a death god. Rather than accept the mistake, the Reaper sends MC's soul (which is apparently identical to his physical body) to prison planet to pay for crimes he didn't commit. Absolutely bizarre premise but that's not why I stopped reading

Despite supposedly being smart, witty, and considerate, the MC quickly develops a habit of refusing help but also ensuring he actively antagonizes people who can beat the crap out of him. It's totally inconsistent. No rational person of any age would shove someone that can sheath their body in flame when they themselves are a totally generic human. Not even going to wait for his plot armor to kick in and save him

If you're like me, and need your MCs to be either intelligent or consistent, then I hope this review helps inform your decision

Seriously Underrated. Buy it without reservations.

I must admit to giving this audiobook 5 stars due in part to the fact that at the time of this review the overall rating is under 4.5 stars. I’m normally fairly stingy with my 5 star ratings, because otherwise the rating system is meaningless. And yeah, I get that I’m basically fighting the ocean tides in trying to have Audible’s nonsensical 5 point system retain any real meaning. Everyone else seems to give 5 stars to a book just because they managed to listen to it all the way to the end, or giving a book 1 star because they didn’t like the MC.

Ok, griping aside, this is actually a really compelling and singular story. Eden Hudson has managed to take a very interesting and somewhat unique approach to setting up her MC in a cultivation universe. Not only that but the characters are easy to connect with and in spite of their flaws you can’t help but root for them. On top of that she has done a fantastic job of marrying together the varying genres of Space Western, Cultivation, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and more.

The narration is every bit as good as all of Travis Baldree’s performances, and the universe and world are fully conceived and easy to immerse yourself in. The only complaint I have is that this audiobook, while not necessarily short, felt like it should probably have been another few hours longer... Hence my guilty justification for my 5 star rating. Normally if I give a book 5 stars, it means that it has exceeded all my expectations and desires.

So in the end, what I’m trying to say is that if you are into the genres I listed above and are looking for a solid audiobook then this one is definitely worth your credit.

I wish I had been able to read a considered review of this book the first time I came across it so I wouldn’t have been put off by its undeserved low rating. Eden Hudson is a talented author and she deserves a better appreciation of her work then the overall rating implies.

The start of something GREAT

I only heard about this from reading Mr.Baldrees FB post about it and I'm sooo happy I did. I started to get antsy halfway through because I knew it was almost over and I can't wait for the next book to come out! Trust me, it's REALLY GOOD.

Bad plot, stupid MC

The main character is one part naive, one part hero complex, one part hot head and one part total moron. It was infuriating how he seemed to get stupider and naiver the longer the story went on. Like the opposite of any normal plot line.

Then we have the plot of the story itself. Whenever things were going too bad for the MC a random plot maguffin showed up to change things. He didn’t work for anything he got.

On the flip side, he also decided not to take advantage of any of the opportunities that fell into his lap. He was just handed a storage ring filled with good stuff that would have turned him into a badass, and what does he do… he uses one thing out of the loads of stuff and utterly forgets about the rest. Idiot writing and idiot character.

Fun mesh of sci fi and cultivation

There are some diverse characters in this world which made for interesting interactions. The plot is original and I didn’t know how it was going to end. I’m interested in seeing more of this world. As usual Travis Baldree delivered a fantastic performance.

Awesome series

This series is so good. The cons of the book are really non existent. The first thing I don't like is this is supposed to be a cultivation book, but it doesn't give me any of the cultivation aspects. I barely know how cultivation works in this new world, and that's really it, all the other cons are so trivial I don't even wanna add them ( I mean small stuff like why that guy doesn't fight? or why is the reaper chasing him after it was her fault?) I do wish he got more abilities tho.

The pros. I really like the start of the book. If I were to give a ranking It'd be: Start 1st, End 2nd, Middle 3rd. The characters are awesome, each one has a unique personality like there real people. ( I don't like the warcry guy) the villains are annoying and all villainy. The world building is lacking, the character progression was good at the start bur started lacking toward the end.

This book is for you If you like cultivation fantasy books. I like to think this is a book you'd get when you have nothing else to get but then it becomes your favorite series. 😍

angry kid can't control himself and gets in troubl

should be the name of this book I mean honestly 90% of the story could have been contained if he had just controlled himself in anger The characters are very shallow there's nothing to them and it's very easy to hate the main character

better than I was expecting!

the summary for this book makes it seem more of a sci-fi than a fantasy, which it has a lot of both. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the book though!

brilliant and fun

Easy to listen to and you get sucked in from the start. Does not drag it's heels getting to the meat of the story.

Pretty cool 🙂

Enjoyable cultivation story. The progression happens a bit fast but the story is fun and well written.

I just can't, the MC is just to self destructive

protagonist as a massive chip on their shoulder won't take a hand out from anyone won't take an insult from anyone and generally makes bad life choices constantly. I get that it's a plot device, but it just feels incredibly forced to push the story in a very unnatural way that is frustrating to listen to.

only got 2H 34M in before I had to stop.
voice acting is good and story has an interesting premise, side characters seem interesting. I just can't suspend my disbelief that someone is really that stupid, the some one being MC.

recommended

Great book, highly recommend to anyone that's a fan of Travis baldree voice acting. Very different take on the genre which was refreshing. Author jammed a bunch of unmemorable Japanese words into a western cyber setting which was uncomfortable and forced to me. But I still enjoyed the story and look forward to the next.
