Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we are suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why.

Heart disease is the number-one killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease.

We all know the dangers of sugar and salt: but the danger attributed to the second white crystal has more to do with getting too little of it, not too much. Too little salt can shift the body into semi-starvation mode, causing insulin resistance, and may even cause twice as much fat to be absorbed for every gram that's consumed. Too little salt in certain populations can also actually increase blood pressure as well as resting heart rate.

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifetstyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Taubes' book puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Story
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

You are just 10% human. For every one of the cells that make up the vessel that you call your body, there are nine impostor cells hitching a ride. You are not just flesh and blood, muscle and bone, brain and skin, but also bacteria and fungi. Over your lifetime, you will carry the equivalent weight of five African elephants in microbes. You are not an individual but a colony. Until recently, we had thought our microbes hardly mattered, but science is revealing a different story, one in which microbes run our bodies and becoming a healthy human is impossible without them.

Publisher's Summary
Warning: Shock and outrage will grip you as you dive into this one-of-a-kind exposé. Shoddy science, sketchy politics, and shady special interests have shaped American Dietary recommendations - and destroyed our nation's health - over recent decades. The phrase "Death by Food Pyramid" isn't shock-value sensationalism, but the tragic consequence of following federal advice and corporate manipulation in pursuit of health.
In Death by Food Pyramid, Denise Minger exposes the forces that overrode common sense and solid science to launch a pyramid phenomenon that bled far beyond US borders to taint the eating habits of the entire developed world.
Minger explores how generations of flawed pyramids and plates endure as part of the national consciousness, and how the "one size fits all" diet mentality these icons convey pushes us deeper into the throes of obesity and disease. Regardless of whether you're an omnivore or vegan, research junkie or science-phobe, health novice or seasoned dieter, Death by Food Pyramid will reframe your understanding of nutrition science - and inspire you to take your health, and your future, into your own hands.

Terrific material made taxing by poor narration
I think the subject matter in this book is excellent. It's a well formulated discussion about how we should be thinking about the food we eat and absorbing information from others on that subject. I really think it should be required reading for anyone exploring the subject of health and diets.
However, the narrator of the book lacks qualities of professional narrators. The tone is very encyclopedic. For instance, humor is often read with identical tone and inflection as scientific terminology without any clear consciousness conveyed about the actual material. Basically, this will sound as if a male Siri were reading with a Midwestern accent.
No offense to the performer but I hope this is redone with a veteran audio book narrator.

This is an informational book so I in no way expected it to be entertaining. It is packed full of interesting information. My issue was that the reader is the worst I have encountered, he sounded almost monotone and had a very computer generated type voice...ugh, this made it a HUGE chore to listen to and as a result, took me forever to listen to.

The narrator makes the book dry
If you could sum up Death by Food Pyramid in three words, what would they be?
A dry voice
What did you like best about this story?
The information
What three words best describe David Minger’s performance?
Too dry, prefer Denise Minger narrating her own book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A little i like The information she did her research very well.
Any additional comments?
I wish there was an app to change the voice it's hard to listen to dry performance. Sorry David Minger I prefer another voice i wish theres an app for that or I rather listen to Denise Minger.

Fascinating subject matter, boring book
I'm really getting into books on nutrition, and after reading an interesting article by Minger I was eager to read this take on the food industry.
But I've had to stop listening 1/3rd of the way through, as it's simply too boring. If you're into a history of US politicians and their impacts on food laws, then go ahead. If you want to know how to get healthier... maybe there's something towards the end? Don't know. I couldn't make it that far.
Another book I'm reading, 'How Not To Diet' by M Greger, similarly covers a history of the food industry in the opening chapters but makes it interesting.
I switched off at a chapter that was basically a glossary of scientific words. Sorry, but dull!
