Publisher's Summary

Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient.

When something is discovered in the victim's apartment that suggests the existence of a high-level conspiracy, Brunetti becomes convinced that somebody is taking great pains to provide a ready-made solution to the crime.

Rich with atmosphere and marvelous plotting, Death in a Strange Country is a superb novel in Donna Leon's chilling Venetian mystery series.

Ah. Vicenza!

Having served with the US Army at Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy, for 3 years in the early '70's, I came to love that city, the Italians with whom we had friendships, and the eternal city of Venezia. I followed this story closely, and thought of acquiring a city map to follow Commisario Brunetti's movements. I felt as though I was a part of the story.

Great ecology and international relations theme!

Donna Leon chooses great themes. Guido is always charming, clever, warm-hearted but can be undone by bureaucracy and dark forces. Interesting exploration of American military bases abroad in this one as well as his relationship with his powerful aristocratic father-in-law.

Pretty Good

I really didn't feel an attachment to the characters here and felt the ending left me hanging. I'd try another but I'm not in a hurry. I much prefer Louise Penny's books.

Death in a Strange Country

This one is a great one! I had a long shift the other night at work and I listened to this while I was working and it helped. The story really flowed nicely and the narration was great.

Not a thriller but very intriguing procedural

Fascinating story about murder in Venice. Outstanding narrator. This is the first Audible in a long series and I’m anxious to start the next.

Interesting characters

Started out a bit slow but once into it the characters came to life. Laugh out loud funny at times; yet sadly all to much like the truth of both Italy, and the American foreign presence overseas.
Once I sped up the reading to 1.2, really liked the narrator!

I cant make up my mind

I couldnt find book 1 of the series on audible so i dont know if the 1st book would have made a difference to me on this book. Listening is easy enough by speeding up the narration. The story seems very thin and slow, almost like a meandering diary. Police work must be very depressing.

Good paced story.

Enjoyed the story. Narrator was very good. Sadly, the plot depicted such cynicism that is probably more true than not. Definitely love stories set in my favorite city in the world.

More to enjoy.

Chose eating on performance as it was hard to hear if there is any background noise. I often walk outside while exercising narrators voice a bit too low w/volume turned to high. Nice accent but...
Good story however wish I’d listened to Book 1st.

Ending not what I expected!!
