Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

Publisher's Summary
It's spring in England, and location scout Kate Sharp has returned to the quaint village of Nether Woodsmoor with its lush gardens, budding hedgerows, and mellow stone cottages to work on a Jane Austen television documentary. The unique opportunity also gives her the chance to explore a possible romance with Alex, the deliciously rumpled local scout.
Rumors of recently discovered Jane Austen letters stir up the production, but then tragedy strikes and a stranger dies in a fire in a village cottage. Soon it's evident that the fire wasn't an accident, but murder. The police investigation narrows to focus on the documentary crew.
Desperate to keep her job and help a friend under suspicion, Kate delves into the search for the identity of the stranger. What was the stranger's connection to the seemingly sleepy village? And who in the village is lying?

An enjoyable series
I am enjoying this series. It's not amazing literature or life changing reading, but it's a fun and cozy mystery series with a bit of romance (not gushy, thank goodness). The story keeps me engaged and it's great to listen to this series while I'm knitting, because it doesn't require so much attention that I risk getting lost in my stitches. I'm stuck between 3 and 4 stars, but one thing that really annoys me is that the narrator of this series makes her English accents sound like Australian accents most of the time. She doesn't do it for the "posh" accents, but for the casual accents, they are definitely more Oz than UK. Otherwise she does a good job.
So, a good, solid cozy mystery series that is light and enjoyable. I'll be listening to the rest of the series.

Really Enjoyed
Typically, I’m not into modern crime thrillers/mysteries. I think of those books as having international spy rings, a rush to discover nuclear blueprints, car chases down narrow European alleyways and gooney looking foreign bad guys. This series, though entertaining and so well narrated, is almost simple. It’s very easy to keep track of everyone and what is going on. I was trying to think what it reminded me of, and then I got it. It’s like a grown-up Nancy Drew book. The book is engaging because of the main character and the supporting crowd. I read the first novel, Death in the English Countryside, and when it was over, I knew immediately I was not through with these people. I wanted more of this charming village and its inhabitants. I purchased book number two, and just like the Nancy Drew series, Death in an English Cottage was just as entertaining as the first one. I doubt if there will be 50+ books in the series, but if so I’m reading them! Also I have to give the writer credit. When I first picked up this book, I was sure the heroine was going to bump her head and awaken in regency England. There have been so many P&P inspired novels that use that contrivance I was pleased to find this was not one of them, though there are clever nods to Jane Austen sprinkled throughout.

Wow! I have a new favorite author!
In Death in an English Cottage by Sara Rosett, Kate Sharp gets a job working as a location scout for a program on Pride and Prejudice in Nether Woodsmore, England. She joins Alex Norcott, a local location scout, with whom she had shared an attraction during her previous visit to the town. Since the local hotel has no room, Kate is given a cottage on the estate of the local gentry next door to that used by the famous literary scholar to be used on the program. Learning that her neighbor is reported to have acquired some previously undisclosed letters by Jane Austen, Kate is alarmed to come home one evening to find her neighbor’s cottage on fire. But even more alarming than the possible loss of such letters is the body the fire fighters find in the house. When DCI Quimby, the local police detective, starts to suspect Alex, Kate uses her own research skills to find the truth and help the man she has had the opportunity to kiss only once.
I really liked the first book in this series, Death in an English Village, and I liked Death in an English Cottage even more. The mystery had some fascinating twists and turns, and I really enjoyed the details about Jane Austen in the story, especially since the books don’t try to be a retelling of her famous book. I also connected with the characters and found myself cheering on the developing relationship between Kate and Alex. Further, I liked seeing the research that Kate puts into clearing Alex’s name, as she uses social media to help her study the life of Amy Brown, the murdered woman.
I really appreciated the audiobook performance of Sarah Mollo-Christensen, who makes this book a lot of fun to listen to. Using a soft, gentle voice, Mollo-Christensen adds extra expression in the more dramatic sections, but for the most part, she lets the drama of the book create the excitement for us readers by itself. I really liked the sound of her voice and the way she performs the whole book.
I greatly enjoyed getting to listen to Death in an English Cottage and connect back with old friends from the first book in the series while meeting new friends. The excitement of the case adds extra fun to the book as well, making this a truly delightful book to listen to. I give this book five stars!

English or Australian?
The story is good but the narrator had me confused. I feel like several of the accents came across more Australian rather than English country side.
Overall pace is a bit slow, not sure if that is a product of the narration or the storyline itself.

Enjoyable cozy mystery
My husband and I love to listen to cozy mysteries while we travel and this was our latest read. We enjoyed listening to it. I wasn't quite sure who the villain was until the reveal so that was good.
I find I am less interested in the romance aspect of the book than I am in the mystery but that is just my personal preference. I love the English setting as well as the fact that there is a Jane-ite expert on set. Nice, enjoyable series....
