Publisher's Summary

Doc Ford has long lived a double life. This time, it may finally have caught up to him. The electrifying new thriller from the New York Times best-selling author.

“I’ll make an example of someone close to you".

On a moonless night on Sanibel Island, Florida, marine biologist Marion “Doc” Ford carefully watches a video of a hooded man executing three hostages. The man is an American working with ISIS, and in the next few days, it’ll be Ford’s job, as part of his shadowy second life, to make sure he never kills anybody else again.

But a lot can go wrong in a few days, and Ford has no way of knowing that not only will the operation prove to be a lot more complicated than he has anticipated, but that he’ll end up bringing those complications back with him to the small community of boaters, guides, lovers, and friends in Dinkin’s Bay, where he’s long made his home.

Someone has taken Ford’s actions very personally, and now no one there is safe - least of all, Ford himself.

Better start listening now.

Critic Reviews

“White continues to provide thinking readers with action-packed thrillers that are also thoughtful and informative...By the end, you won’t be able to read fast enough.” (Bookreporter.com)

“A trip to the Gulf Coast with Doc Ford is never dull…and White doesn’t skimp on the action.... This marine biologist increasingly lets his clandestine life as a government operative take him away from his quiet Sanibel Island home [and White] continues to find fresh ways to bring Ford into the chaos of world politics.” (South Florida Sun Sentinel)

“As with every Doc Ford story, the writing is tight and the story fast-paced.... [Fans of] thriller heroes from James Bond to Jason Bourne will find a lot to like.” (Associated Press)

Confused

I thought I had missed a chapter or something when George Guidall ended the narration. Even went back and re-listened to last 5 chapters and I still don't understand the ending! Felt like I was left in the Deep Blue too.

Lame,lame, lame

I read most of the early Doc Ford novels til they started to sound alike. Came back to check. Nope. I had trouble following the story. What was the dopey conversation with Ford's "Boss" all about? What was the trip to the cabins with the Brazilian all about? How does someone survive an 80' fall onto concrete? When did the shark turn into a whale and then back into a shark?

Best RWW book of all time: Batfishing in the Rainforest"! Cmon, Randy step it up.

Another winner!

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment, as I always do. I've been a Doc Ford fan since the very first book. Randy Wayne White not only does a wonderful job of creating Doc Ford and his supporting cast, but his description of the area is so wonderfully done it makes me feel as though I'm actually there. George Guidall as always brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book to not only Doc Ford fans, but also fans of mystery/suspense books.

Maybe the worst book ever

I love Doc Ford and have read and listened to many. This one is ridiculous, inane, stupid, and makes no sense. Drones being hidden - no personalities, stupid story line - tried to move into the modern age - terrorists, ridiculous plot, rambling - Don't bother - stay with his much better ones.

Good read,

Starts good and liked the last 5 or so chapters, struggled in the middle chapters. Doc love interest in that area would have helped.

Easily distracted.

I tried to get into this book but it was boring! Plot unfolded too quickly.

one of the best from the series!

as a long time fan of the series,I loved this installment. I thought the main antagonist was a bit "Bond villain" at times, but he contained some original twists that made him interesting and unsettlingly insane. Great book!

You can smell the swamp

I really am fond of this whole series... You want me to split hairs over which character is more or less believable well gee. I like them all with the flaws and foibles. This entire series is just very good drama. Written for the literate and alive reader. Not formulaic. And I just had this thought Isn't Cannery Row about a marine biologist with 'Chutzpah"... This is the second character named Doc I admire. Don't expect Dante in these stories nor expect Disney either. Nice human beings having all those emotions that we have we don't understand fully. Hey Netflix... I'm talking series here!!!!!
