The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: Become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano. Number one: He’s obnoxious. Number two: We were enemies more than a decade ago. Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend. I could go on and on, really. When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment, and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents, the grandson turns out to be Troy. Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice - the only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face, in between our many arguments.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Publisher's Summary
While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.
When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal commander assigns Rachel a new protector: her father's apprentice, Logan - the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.
As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Rolling my eyes!!!!
Ok, 1st this has potential but I just can't get over Rachel. She is supposed to be this strong independent person but honestly comes across as a self centered, hotheaded brat who is all "gung ho" about getting in trouble but almost wets her pants every time she gets caught. She doesn't think, just jumps ahead without thinking. How is it that most "strong independent" women in some books are just written as complete idiots who sound smart but act dumb. I mean obvious dumb. Not even a subtle.
Logan. Ok, for whatever reason people are writing about him like he is so mean. I don't think he is mean enough. He is her protector and she does everything to try to get him and her killed. He only thinks about locking her up and never does...he doesn't call her out on any of the dumb things she does and he ends up getting in serious trouble of over stupidity and independent thinking, aka "jump before leaping and forget about consequences".
This book may be ok for other people but it is not for me. I want may money back.

narration wasn't ideal
I liked the story and liked the narrator's voice, but the reading was slow. It felt like during scenes of dire action and commands, the conversations were slow sounding, not quick as it should be in reality. There was no sense of urgency in the narration at any point.

Boring
A great start quickly dissolved into mediocre world building. Fairly intersecting characters are trapped in a plot that takes far too long to develop. I love a long book as long as it’s going somewhere, but the characters don’t go off adventuring until at least halfway through the book.

Snore
What disappointed you about Defiance?
I was honestly so bored that I didn't even continue to the second book. On top of that, the love story has absolutely no foundation.
Has Defiance turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, it's hit and miss with this genre.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was fine, just the story was a bore.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Defiance?
I would have spent a lot more time on back story. Everything kind of just starts out and there's no real foundation to help you connect with the characters.
Any additional comments?
Not worth your time.

Good story, sleepy narration.
I enjoyed the characters, story, and unique world. I appreciated that there wasn't a bunch of bad language or things that would make me hesitant to recommend it to friends or teens. The narrator was oddly sleepy and boring for such an intense story. Her voice didn't seem to change at all between characters or emotions in the story. I will probably just read the others myself because that was annoying.

Love the story - Hate narrator's male voice
Love the story but really struggling with narrator's Male voice.
Her female voice is fine but her male lead voice is the exact same as the female lead. Not only does that make it impossible to connect to the male lead but half the time I never know which one of the leads are speaking.
crazy frustrating.
also, only the first two books are on the romance package. The third and final book, you have to pay for separately.

The narrators voice was awful.
I feel like if I read the book rather than listened, it would be better. I couldn't get past the narrators voice and the way she would say things.
