A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Story
After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.

A Must Buy Immediately Series
Like *He Who Fights with Monsters* and *Dungeon Crawler Carl*, this LitRPG series has become one I anticipate purchasing and listening to immediately upon the book's release. Like those books, the author does a great job with plotting, narrative, and progression.
Unlike those books, JF Brink is merely adequate at characterization as I don't truly feel like I know or particularly like Zach. The character I enjoy most is his conniving demon friend and advisor, but even this relationship does little to make the main character more likeable because Zach rarely engages in any kind of human behavior toward other characters and is often cold and judgemental even with those he should be at least beginning to trust and, more than that, befriend. I'd love for Zach to return Ogras's jokes with his own jokes and to respond to just generally have a personality. Even if he was socially inept, that would be something, but if we didn't have the narration of what the character was thinking, he'd come off as a weird, unnecessarily secretive, and paranoid robot who coldly calculates his relationships. Maybe that is the character, but it isn't a likeable one and it seems like the author doesn't really intend the character to be an unlikeable weirdo because the other characters don't respond to him negatively despite this behavior - and I don't want them to because that's tiresome, but I certainly would like for the character to simply become more relaxed and mature in the way he interacts with others. J.F. Brink knows how to write likeable characters and wise characters, so it is strange that Zach is such a lonely island.
Having said all that, I'm still giving the book 5 stars. If I was a professional reviewer, the above obvious and fairly severe criticism which I totally believe in would probably prevent me from giving a perfect score, but I really enjoyed myself and I'm looking forward not only to the next book but re-listening to the series the week before the next book releases. That's what gets 5 stars from me.
The narration only gets 4 stars because I have to listen to it at 30% speed up even on a fresh listen and while the narrator is absolutely adequate in his performance, that feels like he's being paid for recorded minute or something.

Best “System”
I have listened to quite a few litrpg’s and what I find so incredibly about this particular series is the thoroughly thought out system mechanics and history.
Many authors of this genre don’t possess such attention to detail when laying their foundations, and that can create inconsistencies. This forces the reader to ignore glaring flaws in logic, taking away from the experience.
But that is far from the case here, the lore of this book and the previous one make perfect sense. It’s easy to see how much thought was put into world building and I really respect the author for giving me a proper fantasy litrpg that actually makes sense.
Another thing that sets this tale apart is the characters development. Nothing is handed to Zac, he has to fight tooth and nail for every advantage. He never holds anything back or “forgets” skills for plot development. Zac deserves his spot at #1 and I can’t wait for book 3 to see what he’ll do next!

overall, ok. consistently bad editing/writing
I think the author is quite imaginative, and really has some cool ideas. The premise for this series is awesome, however there are myriad issues that just drag me forcefully out of the story.
The author repeats a lot of words, both throughout the series and in quick succession. For instance, you'll hear 'actually' a lot. And sometimes, you'll hear 'actually' within the same sentence or breath.
He does this with a lot of words, and it drove me crazy. The premise was the only thing sustaining me through this madness. Like, my man, buy a damn thesaurus and hire an editor. Jesus.
Another gripe is the use of vague language, making a lot of the characters feel the same during conversation. Some more effort could have been made and this wouldn't be a problem. Damn shame.

I Love the story, but...
I love the story and the narration. If there is one thing I hate though, is just nerfing the MC for almost half of the book. It seems like an often used trope for sequel books. I love the story besides that. Can't wait for the next book.

The world evolves, main character stays the same
Pro
-There is a fascinating world in this book with things developing and a lot going on.
Hit or MIss
-The main character is OP and creates a power fantasy. If you like that you probably enjoy this book more, however, I don't and thought it made the struggles and powering up short, simple, and generic.
Con
- The main character hasn’t developed from the first book and is a murderhobo that the author throws things at to continue the story. He'll quickly jump to murdering, intimidation, or paying people. Then he’ll justify the first two with flimsy, and sometimes stupid reasons, and never gets punished. As for the town management section, he just does what other people tell him to do than wins more.
- Most other characters are just as flat
- Interesting people don’t show up much (Need more Ogras)
- He paints 99.9% of the world population as unimportant, lazy, and/or evil.
Last thoughts
I would have stopped listening by now as I find the book uninteresting, but I told my buddy I’d finish it so he could talk to someone about it. I just hope it doesn’t turn bad with the romantic stuff that seems to be coming down the pipeline.
Who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind, but I’m not holding my breath.

The story comes together
This story has truly become much better. A wider range of situations, scenery and characters makes this book a clear improvement from the first one where most of it was located on a single island.
It never loses its core though, and keeps the focus on what it really wants. The narrator is still excellent as well.

Just a really great book
This series takes a little time to get in to but so so worth it! Keeps adding new layers and avoids bug cliches. Books are nice and long so you will bet alot of enjoyment from then

Just A Great Book!
Great story, doesn't stagnant like a few long running litrpg books I've listened to.
Great narrator and great editing!

Continues to deliver
Not sure if it is possible to keep the story and not fall into the trap of having to jump the shark with each new chapter but I really enjoyed this and look forward to the release of the next book.
The quality of the writing and the narrator ensures I feel more than happy with my purchase. My only problem is waiting for the next realease.
Thanks :)

pretty pretty . pretty good.
I am a picky reader, I will hate on anything that takes away from the verisimilitude of the story for me. Two books and I haven't hated a thing. Book ticks every box I could want and more. Repeatedly finding out you're smaller and smaller as the mc because of the expansive universes is exciting af.

Great addition
This was a great addition to the series with great progression for our MC and the story as a hole with intense moments that had me on the edge of my seat. The voices were great and I couldn’t ask for more. Overall 15/15 give the series a try

Loved it once again
I listen to a lot of Litrpg books and there are a lot out there that are very ordinary, but this is not one of them. We’ll worth your money at 20+ hours. I loved every second of this and I can’t wait for the next instalment.

"Unhesitantly" is not a word afaik
.. and it's getting really annoying. A reasonable story marred by basic grammar errors that are quite jarring. I know it's not exactly meant to be high literature, but still. Distracting and reduces the overall enjoyment for me. But ah well .. heading into the next one anyway.

it just keeps getting better!
having listened through a few times I can really appreciate the flowing progress of the plot and all of the character building. I'm in for the long run! Bring on the next 80,000 years of strengthening and galaxy wandering!

I really enjoyed this book.
I thought the 2nd book of the series was better than the 1st one. Zak is consolidating his power. He still seems to be crazy strong, but at least he is challenged by supremely stronger characters in the multiverse.
I found myself not wanting to stop listening because I had to find out what was happening. I really enjoyed this book.

Perfectness
A very well proportioned story that never lets you get bored in over blabber or excessive information. Great character’s each with their respective personality traits, extremely well captured with the demon Ogros especially. Overall a worthy listen, as well as the first book Defiance of the Fall.
