Nothing Of Substance Happened

The entire first half of the book was spent inside the tower, which was entirely unnecessary and did nothing for the progression of the characters or the story.

The tower arc could’ve easily been broken down to the start, the group separation, the Fate challenge, and the events that occur upon exiting the tower…the rest was literally pages of internal supposition which boiled down to guesses, and soooo much filler.
The fights were terrible at best…and this is me trying to be kind.

**Spoiler, maybe**
There’s a fight/scene outside the tower where Zack uses a cursed sword to launch a Getsuga Tenshou at the enemy…then it’s as if the skill pauses in mid-air and waits for several enemies to stop have a conversation (I shit you not), decide upon a course of action, then launch a bevy of powerful attacks in order to counter said Getsuga Tenshou.

Also, while trapped in a array by the most dangerous of his enemies he releases his axe spirit to go ham-what’s wrong with that you may ask-nothing, except instead of attacking the individuals who has him trapped, it instead attacks the weak enemies in the background who are of no threat to him.

But wait there’s more: while on a spaceship, in space, he tries to use his Loam Walker and realizes, Oh No! This is space and I can only use this skill on earth…then just a few sentences later, he uses the skill at will with zero explanation.
And don’t tell me Axeman’s Spirit allowed him to JF. Don’t you dare drop a mcguffin on my plate and call it creative writing. You need a good/better editor.

The first three books were awesome. You seemed to have a plan (4 & 5, not so much). Because of the first three, I’ll read number six. Hopefully, you can get back on track because this world you’ve built has so much potential for great storytelling.

Please Get a Better Editor

While I still enjoyed the story overall, the first half was full of constant internal monologs. It felt like the author was trying to meet a minimum word count without actually progressing the story in any significant way.

The biggest problem, which has only gotten worse in each successive book, is the author's habit of repeating phrases and clauses in close proximity: "however", "the situation", "the energy", "in his body", etc. This is one of the first things writers are taught to avoid, and it is especially jarring in audio book format.

I will most likely still get the next in the series, but after the incursion arc is completed I will be setting this series aside unless the quality picks up.

Next Book Release Date

Book 6 release date: 08/16/2022

I have a calendar on the wall filled with book release dates. I hate finishing a good book, but at least it is a small comfort to know when the next book is coming out. I just want to say thanks to JF Brink for always posting the next books release date.

A great continuation.

if you have enjoyed the story to this point, you will enjoy this. Also be aware that while i thought the song at the end would be a bit cringey, that was actually fire. definitely a fan of static now sheesh.

Awesome

Another great book on the series with the first part being the conclusion of the tower and i have to say my favorite part was the battle royale and the second being the aftermath of the system quest to kill zac and the undead incursion

Too much reflection

This was the least enjoyable instalment of the series so far. I won't say I didn't enjoy it but it wasn't the best. The main problem and I've noted others seem to agree is the amount of internal monologing the main character does about the world and it's mechanics. Simply put this is dull and adds nothing to the story. Now don't get me wrong I'll still get the next book but if the trend continues I'll drop the series but I am hoping for more action/story less pondering on why this does that or this works like that.

The story progression is fair enough it moved on so no complaints on that score but the book could have lost 2-3 hours and the story wouldn't have suffered. In a previous review for the Eric Ugland series Good guys/Bad guys series I was critical as they were very short (typically under 9 hours) but at least they were as a consequence always moving along quickly. I don't mind some padding but this was too much. Fingers crossed for next time.

Good but drags on a bit at the beginning

After a very slow start, things do start to get better. The story does progress but not as much as I’d have liked for a 24 hour long book.

The writing still hasn’t improved from the previous books though. Too many “unfortunately”, “by now”, “actually” etc. They are just not needed in every sentence.

Overall mot a bad book though and after I got to around 12 hours I did find myself enjoying the story. Will definitely be getting the next one

Sooo much pondering!

Five hours to go and I'm throwing in the towel. I can't bear it any more.
Hours and hours of a trippy trial, frankly was quite dull.
Then I thought we were actually getting back to the peril and story. Which happened for about an hour. Now back to more cultivation and pondering. This gave me time to have my own insights. I just don't care anymore.
I really enjoyed the previous books, but there was too much introspection and too little plot for me on this volume.

Enjoyed, but dialogue repetition is harming that.

It's now my second time listening through the series and while I noticed some repetition in the first go through, It was far worse the second go around.

Dialogue is constantly repeated over and over and sometimes, towards the end, within the same sentence or sentences right next to each other.

Oh? You might say? Well, that's one of the examples of limited vocabulary used for dialogue throughout, not just this book, but the entire series so far. It's mostly from the MC - which makes him appear dumb as hell, harder to like and makes you wonder how he even made any friends or even managed to get into a relationship before the fall.

Other examples spanning all the books until now are: "What?", "You!", "by now", "at this point", "however" and "the thing".

I believe there's some more, but I honestly don't remember or care too much to list everything. Nor do I even need to, because even those few examples are repeated again and again without fail and really sapped my enjoyment. So much so that it took this series from something I would heartily recommend, to something I would be somewhat embarrassed by doing so.

Personally, I think the fault lies with the author wanting to add the additional information that might've been included in a question, for example like when "Oh?" is used, and instead put the necessary information the MC already had, below the dialogue in question. It's fine for us because we're reading/listening, but if you were to cut all that, the dialogue would seem pretty abnormal in my opinion, considering the amount of times this happens.

This would be fine on occasion, but it's so bad when it persists even after 4 books of the same thing. It takes you out of the amazing multiverse that's been created and hampers the believability of all the characters, no matter how good they are.

And yes, the problem attaches to nearly every character, even supreme entities of the multiverse. Enough that I jokingly justified it as a limitation of the book of babble at times.

Ultimately, I just hope this issue gets rectified, even if a little, as it would do wonders for the perceived intelligence of charactes and by doing so make things believable and eliminate the risk of being taken out of the story in annoyance/disappointment.

As a final note, I think the narrator has been perfect and definitely played no small part in saving the series for me. Can't wait for book 6.

No more

I’m done with this series... I don’t think the author understands the length of a meter since we are continually bombarded with improbably descriptions that are tens of meters in height or length. The he fist half of this book should have been part of the last book since the story just cut off mid dungeon. The rest of the book was just meh.... limited vocabulary is a bother.... it’s just not very good writing.

Fantastic book

Being new to this type of books, I was hooked after the first book. The narrator was great with all the voices and the story lines from book 1-5 was very engaging to draw you in. I listened to all five books within two weeks. Great listen if looking for new books similar to Brandon Sanderson, Michael J Sullivan in my option

cant wait for the sixth

I wish id written down the awesome moments so that I could refer to them in this review, although that'd probably be spoilers. If you love cultivation, grew up on dbz and game, I cant think of a better litrpg and ive read a lot of them. There are some awesome moments, described so well that it feels as good as goku going SS after krillen dies. I can't explain it better than that. Eg. Rat blood tower of eternity - imagine their faces when he rocks up looking like that. So good.

Horrendously repetitive, flat emotionless main character.

The overarching story is fine. The narrator does alright. The main character is a power fantasy, sure. But then the writing goes ahead and makes boiled pasta look like a gourmet meal.
The character ‘frowned’ over 50 times in this book whenever he encounters any hardship. He even frowned while playing dead and looking like a corpse. The other half of the time the book is ranting about how everything is practically effortless before putting in another obstacle to frown at.
A bit of time spent editing this book and I might’ve wanted to continue the series. It was so jarring I could hardly get to the end.

So far the best LitRpg

I’ve heard Defiance of the Fall and have had to wait for 4 and 5 with anticipation. Let’s just say I have not been disappointed a single bit. Im so happy with the development of the story. My only concern is (spoiler) with the demon Ogross, falling so behind in power, I loved the idea of zack and Ogross being halves of one and being able to cover for eachother and need eachother. Still loving the series!! Hopefully Ogross has lucky encounters and catches up!

Not a bad story

I'm not a gamer, but find I'm enjoying the trope. Not exactly high-brow, but fun. When's the next one due?
