Chaos reigns in the arena after Hades, the God of Darkness, claimed Melany for his own clan. Rumors say each student will be trained by their clan’s God, going to live with them. It could be the last time Melany sees her friends…or Lucian. She has no choice, though: She must follow Hades to the Underworld and train with him in his hall. She’ll learn to be stronger and fiercer. She’ll learn to face Hades’ darkness…the same darkness lurking inside her.

Yesterday I was a teenager waiting tables in Manhattan, and today, monsters exist and I can see them. Overnight I’m thrown into the realm of the Watchers, a society of earthbound angels split into two factions: the Shades, whose powerful dark magic is given to them by the fallen angels, and the Lumens, whose abilities are bestowed on them by the archangels of Avalon. They’re on opposite sides of a brutal war, and I only have a few days to pick which side I want to join. I’m ready to choose when the Shades force my hand by cursing someone I love.

There’s only one rule in the world I come from. Keep our existence a secret. Period. The day my sister broke that rule one too many times, I knew there would be consequences. I expected us to be sent to one of those schools for “troubled” kids - and maybe Daizlei Academy was, in a way. But really, it was far more complicated than that. You see, I thought that world had forgotten me. Forgotten us. For years we were left alone, and one day...we weren’t. It was only when I got there that I remembered the second rule: Trust no one.

Publisher's Summary
Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson.
On their 18th birthday, everyone in the world receives a Shadowbox - a magic box that is a gift like no other...because, it’s a gift from the gods. For the majority of people, there’s only a birthday message inside their Shadowbox. For a few chosen, though, there’s something more. Nobody knows what those special guys receive. What’s known is that they disappear and never come back.
Rumors say they are invited to join the gods’ army. I think it’s just a load of crap.
My name is Melany Richmond, and for my entire life, I’ve been an outcast - an orphan tossed around like a ship in a storm. I don’t think that gods really exist. I never even received my Shadowbox when I turned 18. Maybe, because nobody knows my true birth date or because not even the gods care about me. After all, I'm a blue-haired rebel and a troublemaker with tattoos all over my arms.
I’m not like Callie Demos, the beautiful blondie living in the huge estate my adopted mother takes care of. She is the perfect specimen of Greek devotion, and nobody doubts she will get “the call”. She has everything in her life and doesn’t appreciate any of it. Her birthday party is the biggest event in town, and everyone wants to be there when she receives her blessing. To me, it’s just another ridiculous parade. But when I secretly open her Shadowbox and feel its magic on my skin, all my beliefs vanish.
Gods do exist. And if the scroll in my hands says the truth, they have a secret academy where their recruits train to become demigods. I’ve done really bad things in my life but stealing Callie’s opportunity to attend the god’s academy? It’s got to be the worst. If gods find out I’m a faker, what was supposed to be someone else’s gift may turn into my personal curse.
This is a young adult urban fantasy for listeners featuring magic, adventures, and friendship.

This was a very enjoyable book. The narrators were fantastic. It was very easy for me to get into Melany’s story. I felt like I was right there along side her as she embarked upon the journey that would change her life forever. I admired her strength, determination and loyalty. The author did a wonderful job building the world of the Demigod Academy and developing the characters. I can’t wait to find out where the big surprise at the end is going to lead Melany in the next book.

What if the Greek Gods Were Real?
If you enjoy Greek Mythology and Academy books then this is the perfect book for you. Especially if you have always wondered what meeting some of those gods in person would be like...
Melany Richmond may be Greek but she has never really believed that the gods were real, because so far her life has sucked and they haven't helped her out much. That all changes when she receives her shadowbox and gets invited to go to the academy where she will train to be a Demigod in the Gods' army she doesn't quite know what to believe.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of the series. I especially liked the depictions of Demeter and Dionysus. This book does end on a cliffhanger so consider yourself warned!

If you want a pretty basic story about demi gods, you'll love this. I kind of got a divergent feel when it came down to the main character even though this isn't like divergent (at least from just reading this first book.)
I say its pretty solid, there are better books out there, but if you want to check it out to escape for a little while, I think you won't be disappointed.
If you are wanting to find "The most amazing thing" .... well maybe don't come here.
It's solid, but repetitive.

Interesting take on the Greek pantheon.
The plot moved along at a good pace, but I would have liked more description on the layout of the academy campus. I was also curious about the inner workings and care-taking of the facilities and creatures. It isn't necessary for the plot, but when I'm immersed in a new fantasy, I tend to wonder about those things. Overall, a good read. Looking forward to the next one.

Brilliant first part of Demigods Academy
When I saw there were 2 narrators I thought they'd both narrate at the same time and do the girls and boys voices. However it was narrated different chapters depending on if it was Melanie's or Lucien's point of view.
That said I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narration was really good and the story flowed well.
Melanie believes she's tricked her way into the Demigods Academy by taking her friends place. She's been looked down on her whole life as she comes from a Foster family. She has always thought she was destined for greater things so she goes to the Demigods Academy on what she believes is her friends ticket. There she will have to learn new skills and pass a series of trials to get into one of the gods clans. If you love Greek mythology you'll love this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I received a free copy from the author but this review is my own opinion. Definitely worth a listen.

Brilliant
I loved the unique selection process for the school that everyone wants to go to. The main character is Melany who doesn't take herself too seriously and fights fiercely for her friends. She is quite laid back about her love interest which makes a nice change. I found this book to be so spellbinding that I could not stop listening 😀. The narrators are well suited to the characters and bring them to life. I cannot wait to see what happens next to Melany and her friends.

Wow I'm not sure how did I missed this book but I'm glad I saw it. From the moment I saw who the narrators are I grabbed it straightaway. I'm a huge fan of Vanessa Moyen and Stephen Dexter their both amazing, fantastic narrators I can't get enough of them both.
anyway it's a truly fast paced story with incredible world and character building. Melanie she is an awesome mc she doesn't take shit from anyone not even from the gods themselves. Omg is this an RH? because next book will have Melanie being claimed by Hades and I think there's gonna be feelings involved *sighs* I love Lucian and I want him to be with Melanie pls.
