Story
We aren’t born into a self. It is created without our consent, built out of our childhoods, our circumstances, and chance. But in the busyness of adult life, we rarely have time to think clearly about the questions that matter most. Writing with the passion and clarity that made his debut, To Shake the Sleeping Self, a national best seller, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight themes all of us face as we find our way in life: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.

Story
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Late one June night in 2011, a large animal collided with an SUV cruising down a Connecticut parkway. The creature appeared as something out of New England's forgotten past. Beside the road lay a 140-pound mountain lion. Speculations ran wild, the wildest of which figured him a ghostly survivor from a bygone century when lions last roamed the eastern United States. Publisher's Summary
"...a very sweet dog story" (Outside)
The story of a dog, his human, and the friendship that saved both of their lives.
When Ben Moon moved from the Midwest to Oregon, he hadn’t planned on getting a dog. But when he first met the soulful gaze of a rescue pup in a shelter, Ben instantly felt a connection, and his friendship with Denali was born. The two of them set out on the road together, on an adventure that would take them across the American West and through some of the best years of their lives. But when Ben was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 29, he faced a difficult battle with the disease, and Denali never once left his side until they were back out surfing and climbing crags. It was only a short time later that Denali was struck by the same disease, and Ben had the chance to return the favor.
Denali is the story of this powerful friendship that shaped Ben and Denali’s lives, showing the strength and love that we give and receive when we have our friends by our side.
Critic Reviews
"Photographer and filmmaker Moon explores his relationship with his dog and their special bond forged during life and death moments in this moving debut...Moon inspires and educates in this tearjerking memoir of his best friend." (Publisher's Weekly)
"...Moon doesn’t tiptoe around his struggles with depression and anxiety, the dissolution of his marriage not long after he adopted Denali, or the confusing, frightening experience of being diagnosed with a type of cancer that’s so rare in young men that they often don’t get tested for it." A story if survival.
In this book, Ben Moon shares his harrowing survival story through colorectal cancer and the dog who led him through. This was one of the best books I’ve ever listened to. I too have been through health hell at a young age. I related so much to his struggles of growing up while going through a different journey than all of my peers, however being blessed to have an amazing canine friend by my side who always understands. (My girl is a pit mix named Lille) His honesty of living through survivors guilt made me feel less alone.
Thank you Ben for telling your story of you and your soul dog Denali. I wish you all the best in your journey with Nori.

Heart opening, inspiring, and courageous!
Being a fan of Ben Moon’s work for years, and a fellow appreciator of canines I went into this knowing it would be incredible. What I found was even more than expected... a brilliant open heart of work, courageous in his ability through self-awareness to be extremely vulnerable, and through this vulnerability pull the reader in for companionship of a lifetime. Hearing Ben share the story through his own voice was even more engaging than reading the pages. I found myself vocally cheering him and Denali on and wanting to give him a hug, while at the same time awe-inspiringly impressed with his life.
Thank you Ben for opening your heart, sharing your story, and for willing to be face down in the arena (a reference to my favorite Roosevelt quote) full of courage and daring greatly.

Denali
This amazing love story of a man and his dog goes so much deeper than that. It is about life, love health, and living ones every day existence to the fullest.
It also goes deeper. It is about the oneness that once in a lifetime relationship with a special dog can give you. The love, the bond, the things he or she can see in you that you may not see yourself.
What that animal can teach you about life, love and friendship.
I strongly recommend this book!

A love story between a man and his dog
I'd never heard of Ben Moon or his dog Denali before seeing their piercing eyes staring back at me from the shelf in the bookstore. I felt drawn to the image on the cover and purchased the title out of curiosity.
The book is a bit slow at times, but overall I found Ben's story incredibly moving and relatable. It's a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the resilience of the human spirit. As a dog lover/owner I also found it to be a beautiful tribute to man's best friend. The bond between a dog and his "person" is indescribable... it's something I didn't fully understand until I became a dog owner myself. Ben captures the depth of the love and loyalty between people and their dogs perfectly.

Powerful lessons shared with humility and grace
I loved listening to Ben’s story. His childhood alone would have been filled with lessons to share.
His blunt , truthful telling of his encounter with illness is essential learnings for all of us.
His connection with his dog is a whole other piece of awakenings shared.
Add in his athletic endeavors in the PNW - well it’s really something amazing !
